WASHINGTON - Chad Barrett scored in the 39th minute to help the Seattle Sounders beat D.C. United 1-0 on Saturday night. Seattle (11-3-2) won its third straight and extended its undefeated streak to five games. Gonzalo Pineda lofted a cross and Barrett headed the feed from the penalty spot to inside the upper left corner of the goal past goalkeeper Bill Hamid. The goal was Barretts third goal in four games and his fourth of the season. United (7-5-4) held a significant possession advantage but couldnt find the net. In the 82nd minute, Eddie Johnson narrowly missed tying the game when his header fell wide. Both teams played without their top scorers — Seattles Clint Dempsey is playing for the U.S. in the World Cup, and Uniteds Fabian Espindola is serving a suspension. PEORIA, Ariz. - Justin Smoak and the Seattle Mariners have avoided arbitration by agreeing on a contract that guarantees the first baseman $2,787,500 and could be worth up to $8,287,500 over two years. Smoak will earn $2,637,500 this season under Saturdays agreement, and Seattle has a $3.65 million option for 2015 with a $150,000 buyout. The deal contains several bonuses and escalators. He was Seattles last player in arbitration. With the moves to acquire Corey Hart and Logan Morrison in the off-season, Smoaks time at first base could be significantly reduced if he isnt a consistent performer at the plate. Smoak, 27, hit a career-high 20 homers last season but batted just .238. He improved after a stint on the disabled list in June, raising his average to .274 in early August before a swoon over the final six weeks of the season. Smoak ranked fifth among AL first basemen with a .995 fielding percentage. His option price could escalate based on 2014 performance and awards: $100,000 for 500 plate appearances, $250,000 for 525 plate appearances, $250,00 for finishing among the top 15 in MVP voting, $200,000 for All-Star election or selection, $150,000 for Silver Slugger and $50,000 for Gold Glove. In addition, he could earn all of those amounts as 2014 bonuses. The option would become guaranteed if he has 525 plate appearances or meets the MVP, All-Star or Silver Slugger targets. PITTSBURGH -- Josh Harrison got the game-winning hit and yet all anyone wanted to ask him about was how he wriggled out of that wild rundown an inning earlier. Harrisons double with two outs in the 11th gave the Pittsburgh Pirates a 3-2 victory over the New York Mets on Friday night. "The rundown was fun, but the hit was more exciting because it meant the game was over and we won," Harrison said. Jordy Mercer hit a two-run single for the Pirates (41-39), who moved two games above .500 for the first time since April 10. They have won the first two games of the four-game series. Pinch-hitter Clint Barmes drew a one-out walk from former Pittsburgh reliever Vic Black (1-2) in the 11th. Mercer struck out before Harrison hit a drive to the 375-foot sign in right-centre, scoring Barmes without a throw. Harrison entered as a pinch hitter in the seventh and squirmed his way out of a long rundown in the 10th. The play drew an argument from Mets manager Terry Collins, who thought Harrison should have been ruled out for running outside the baseline. Harrison twice avoided a tag by hitting the ground and popping back up. "Like I learned in middle school -- stop, drop and roll," he said. Harrison eventually scrambled into third, putting two Pirates runners in scoring position with none out. Jenrry Mejia pitched out of the jam by getting two strikeouts and a fly to right. Black, acquired from the Pirates late last season in a trade, wasnt as fortunate in the 11th. Harrison and teammate Russell Martin each had two hits. Jared Hughes (4-2) pitched two scoreless innings for the win. Lucas Duda hit a two-run single and rookie Travis dArnaud had three hits for the Mets, who played without seven-time All-Star David Wright. The third baseman was scratched about 90 minutes beefore the first pitch with a sore left shoulder and will return to New York on Saturday for an MRI.dddddddddddd Wright, riding a 10-game hitting streak, said the shoulder has been nagging him for a couple of weeks. "Any loss is going to be tough," said Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy, who had two hits. "Mejia did a great job right there that inning. Its a loss. Losses are tough. I dont know any other way to describe it." Neither rookie starter figured in the decision but both pitched well. New Yorks Jacob deGrom gave up two runs and five hits in 6 2-3 innings. Cumpton is 3-0 with a 2.97 ERA in five June starts after giving up 11 runs in 3 2-3 innings on May 31 in a loss at Dodger Stadium. Leading up to SportsCentres Year In Review on Christmas Eve, TSN and TSN.ca look back at each of the Top 10 stories of 2013. Today, we look back at LeBron James and the Miami Heat winning their second straight NBA championship. The Decision seems so long ago now. Its now been over three years since LeBron James sat down with Jim Gray to let the world know that he was taking his talents to South Beach, turning his back on his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers and signing with the Miami Heat to form - along with Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade - the NBAs most hated triumvirate. Something strange, but compelling, has happened since then and it culminated in the Heats second-straight NBA Championship this past June. It took three years, but LeBron James finally found redemption. Few shed tears when the Heat fell to the Dallas Mavericks in six games in the 2011 NBA Finals. The sense of schadenfreude was palpable as Mark Cubans charges pulled the upset and left the Heat wondering what went wrong. When the team re-emerged in 2012 as Eastern Conference Champions and mowed down the Oklahoma City Thunder to claim the Heats second-ever NBA Title, there was a sense of inevitability. They were built to be the best and they were and there was nothing anyone could say otherwise. But something changed in 2013 and its hard to put a finger on it. The NBAs reigning champions, the leagues biggest heels in recent memory, underwent a transformation that few saw coming. Maybe it was the second act of Chris “Birdman” Andersen, the man once banned from the league on drug offences who signed in January and emerged as a catalyst for the club just before their 27-game winning-streak that took them into late March. Maybe it was watching Ray Allen, chartered member of the Boston Celtics “Big Three” shift into a supporting role with the Heat, coming off of the bench to provide key minutes. Maybe it was watching the team battle to a seven-game Eastern Conference finals victory over the upstart Indiana Pacers, the team that will most likely challenge their Eastern Conference crown come this June. If it was none of those, it was certainly Game 6 of the NBA Finals. Down 13 points in the fourth to the San Antonio Spurs and seemingly doomed to their second defeat in the NBA Finals in three seasons, James decided to take control of the narrative on his own, dropping 18 points in the final frame to help send the game into overtime, where the Heat came back for a 103-100 win to even the series for a third time. The Heats Game 7 triumph seemed like an inevitability after that, the aging Spurs deflated and resigned to defeat. In looking human, the Heat found humility. In humility, they found victory. Ante Zizic Cavaliers Jersey . 8 Sergio Parisse for its penultimate Six Nations match against Ireland at Lansdowne Road. Tyrone Hill Jersey . Erik Logan, president of the network, said Friday that the postponement was made after meetings with the St. Louis Rams. http://www.cavaliersbasketballpro.com/jo...valiers-jersey/. Indeed, must be among the greatest challenges in all of sports. The pressure he applies, from set to set, game to game, point to point, shot to shot. Terrell Brandon Jersey .com) - There may be a debate in Philadelphia about who should be the starting quarterback of the Eagles. Tyrone Hill Cavaliers Jersey .com) - The Los Angeles Kings peppered Ryan Miller with shot after shot. The Edmonton Oilers picked up veteran scoring winger Teddy Purcell, sending Sam Gagner to Tampa Bay, who then flipped Gagner to Arizona in a move to clear cap space. Numbers Game breaks down the pieces involved in these two deals. The Oilers Get: RW Teddy Purcell. Purcell, 28, is a skilled winger with good size, though he doesnt always use that size to his maximum advantage. Hes missed a total of three games over the past four seasons and his 194 points over that time ranks 57th in the league. Hes a productive player. A fine complement to other skilled forwards, Purcell has posted strong relative posession stats, enough that hes a solid fit as a second-line winger. How that fits with the current Oilers roster is an interesting question, at the very least. With Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, David Perron and Nail Yakupov on board, adding Purcell to the mix does give the Oilers plenty of scoring wingers, though they are now looking at a presumed hole at second-line centre, unless the Oilers are already projecting third overall pick Leon Draisaitl into that spot. Purcell has two years remaining on a contract that comes with a $4.5-million cap hit; no bargain, but not unreasonable for a top-six forward. The Coyotes Get: C Sam Gagner and RW B.J. Crombeen. Gagner is a 24-year-old who has never surpassed the 49 points that he scored as a rookie, but is also the second-leading scorer from the 2007 Draft class, behind only first overall pick Patrick Kane. Its certainly possible that Gagner can recover his game, because hes still relatively young, but hes been a possession disaster over the past couple seasons and at least part of that reflects his defensive shortcomings. Where this fits for Arizona is that they have two-way centres that can effectively protect Gagner. With Martin Hanzal and Antoine Vermette available to face tougher match-ups, Gagner can be utilized in a role that focuses on offensive production. Since the Coyotes just bought out Mike Ribeiro, its conceivable that Gagner could take over those minutes and Ribeiro started a higher percentage of his shifts in the offensive zone (minimum 40 games played) than anyone in the league last season. If the Coyotes are going to maximize Gagners production, they could also give him that offensive role and add a free agent winger to further upgrade their skill level. Former Oilers RW Ales Hemsky is a free agent, but Jussi Jokinen, Matt Moulson and Mike Cammalleri are other options that could have some appeal. Gagner has two years left on hiss contract, at a cap hit of $4.dddddddddddd.8-million, and will get $5-million per season in actual salary, with the Lightning retaining one-third the cost as part of the trade. More on that in a moment. Crombeen is a 28-year-old winger who has has 90 fights and 49 points in 265 games over the past six-plus seasons. Hes generally a subpar possession player, but not so much so that he cant handle a regular shift on the fourth line. Heading into the final year of his contract, Crombeen brings a cap hit of $1.15-million, and gives the Coyotes an enforcer that they can keep in the lineup on at least a semi-regular basis. The Lightning Get: A sixth-round pick in 2015. In the immediate aftermath of the Gagner-for-Purcell swap, the Lightning Tweeted that Gagner was going to be bought-out, which makes sense considering the Lightnings decision to retain salary as part of the deal with Arizona. Since Gagner is under 26-years-old, a buyout would cost one-third the value of his contract, so the Coyotes jumped in, before Gagner hit the open market, and by taking on Crombeens salary, gave the Lightning a little increased financial flexibility as they prepare for free agency on July 1. With more room to maneuver under the cap, the Lightning could go in a couple directions. They could go after a scoring winger -- Jarome Iginla, Thomas Vanek and Mike Cammalleri are some options -- a veteran to complement a young and promising group of Tampa Bay forwards, or they could spend that money on defence. Former Lightning D Dan Boyle could be one target, but Christian Ehrhoff, Mark Fayne, Anton Stralman and Matt Niskanen are among the more prized blueliners about to hit free agency. A sixth-round pick brings with it about a 15% chance of yielding an NHL player, so not great value, but a token price for taking on Crombeens contract. In a separate deal, the Lightning also moved Nate Thompson to Anaheim, acquiring fourth and seventh-round picks in 2015. The picks bring a little less than a 30% chance of an NHL player, but the Lightning clear Thompsons $1.6-million per season for the next three years off the books. Essentially the Oilers, and especially the Lightning look like they are making moves to set up something else, other moves to make this offseason, while the Coyotes took advantage of an opportunity and filled a hole in their lineup at a very reasonable cost. In August of 2013 new Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was in a cautious mood. "This is not a team to win tomorrow," said Mourinho. "We are a team of kids, this is a team where the best years are to come." A year later and those years have started. Last season, of course, Chelsea got much closer than Mourinho ever imagined. "We were not feeling like a title contender but in fact we finished very close, so we did well," admitted the boss on Friday. Four points. That was all that separated Chelsea from title winners Manchester City, a side that scored 31 more goals than the Blues. In the end that was the difference. Mourinho had started the season thinking inexperience would be the reason for their failure, but by February he knew it was a lack of goals. During a sponsorship launch with watch manufacturers Hublot, Mourinho, privately, said to senior representatives of the Swiss company: "I have a team but no striker. It is not possible for us to win the Premier League." In the 38 Premier League games last season, Fernando Torres started 17, Samuel Etoo started 16 and Demba Ba five. How Chelsea managed to get so close with three ineffective strikers spoke to the strengths of the squad and, of course, the manager himself. Etoo ended the campaign with nine goals, Ba five and the abysmal Torres with five, despite playing 1592 Premier League minutes. Mourinho had grand plans when he retook the job of how to reinvigorate the Spaniard, saying: "Fernando is not a player with balls into his feet. Fernando is a man of depth, of movement who likes to get to the back of defenders. If we can give him what he needs, I think he will get success again." Nearly six hundred minutes later the jury was in. Chelseas style wasnt at their best when trying to work to the needs of Torres, they needed a forward with balls into his feet and he proved to be equally ineffective for Mourinho than he had been under other managers since moving to Stamford Bridge. 2011/12 Torres under Andre Villas Boas and Roberto Di Matteo – Six Premier League goals in 1907 minutes – an average of one goal every 317 minutes. 2012/13 Torres under Di Matteo and Rafa Benitez – Eight Premier League goals in 2573 Premier League minutes – an average of one goal every 321 minutes. 2013/14 under Mourinho – Five Premier League goals in 1592 minutes – an average of one goal every 318 minutes. The statistics are remarkable but for the manager the biggest one that needed to change was minutes played. Throughout last season it was evidently clear that many of the Chelsea players, inside the three behind the striker, regularly showed a lack of trust in Torres as an outlet. The consequence of this was teams defended deeper and the pressure fell on the likes of Oscar and Eden Hazard to unlock the opposition. Chelsea led the league averaging 18.2 shots per game but the teams above them scored 30 or more goals as Mourinhos side scored just one goal or less in 15 of the 38 matches. The Special One has been full of praise of the Chelsea board after targeting key areas to bring more power and strength through the middle for this season, particularly up front with the addition of Diego Costa. Didier Drogbas arrival, brought on as a sub on Monday, pushes Torres further down the pecking order. "This season we have bought some key players and we believe we are in another dimension," said the 51-year-old in Fridays press conference ahead of Mondays clash with Burnley. Sean Dyches Premier League new boys may well prove to be the weakest of all the teams in the division this season, having come up through the Championship with very little funds behind them, so we should be cautious about drawing conclusions about this new Chelsea side based on their first opponents of the new campaign. However, it was clear that Cesc Fabregas brings something Chelsea so desperately needs from central midfield and his pass for Andre Schurrles goal will be one of the finest you will see this season. It capped off a brilliant, 22 pass move that changed the momentum of the game. The former Arsenal man will grab the headlines for a sensational performance but the showing from Diego Costa was just as important. It was a contest that was over by half-time. Burnley led for just two hundred seconds before the Spaniard smashed home an equalizer on the left foot. The highlight packs will show a simple finish but the buildup showed what Costa can bring. 55 seconds before his left foot leveled the scores, Fabregas played a wonderful diagonal ball for the forward to run on to. He sprinted, held the ball up well and waited for others to come into attack. Burnley couldnt get the ball back and 17 passes later he had scored by sitting deeper, off the defenders, and anticipating a clearance or rebound. Costas movement is excellent and much different to Torres. He doesnt spend a lot of time running on the shoulder of a defender, instead he wants to drop deeper and link up with others, which is exactly what the fluid, interchanging, intelligent Chelsea attack demands. He is a striker who is very confident in every move he makes. He sprints with purpose and never was this more evident than in the 30th minute. Costa sat deep between central defenders as the ball was played to left back Ben Mee but the moment the Burnley man received the ball, he anticipated he would be uncomfortable with a press from Hazard. He began sprinting towards the Burnley goal as if a Chelsea player had the ball and as soon as Mee did what he expected, he intercepted the ball and was clear away on a one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He was then brought down in the box but referee Michael Oliver wrongly decided to book him for simulation. Costas intelligence had not been rewarded this time but it was just a teaser to what is to come over the next 10 months of Premier League football. Its only week one but already Mourinhos men are top scorers. Costa scored but he brought much more than that, receiving more than 50 passes and linking up marvelously with Oscar, Hazard and Schurrle. Overall it was performance from a centre-forward that Chelsea have been lacking for far too long. (fourfourtwo.com - click for larger image) It is little wonder Mourinho is no longer cautious about Chelseas title aspirations this season. Rudy Gay Jersey . Ben Street scored twice for the Heat (17-5-1), who won their fourth game in a row and 13th in their last 14 outings. Brett Bulmer scored the lone goal for the Wild (6-11-0), who dropped their sixth straight contest.Things started off quite well for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but their January slide has pushed them out of playoff position. So whats exactly wrong with the Blue and White these days? The team opened 2014 on a high, defeating the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 in a shootout in front of more than 105,000 fans at Michigan Stadium for the NHLs Winter Classic. Since the outdoor win, the Leafs have dropped three straight games and have been outscored 18-5 in those contests. On top of that, the club has just five regulation/overtime victories over their last 31 games and a 4-13 record in the 17 games that ended in regulation. By comparison, the Leafs had 13 regulation/overtime wins in their final 31 games under Ron Wilson. Going into Friday nights game against Washington, theyve gone 2-7-4 in their last 13 road games, are 4-for-43 on the power play and their last road regulation win was Oct. 30 in Calgary. Is it the coaching? Many fans have called for the firing of head coach Randy Carlyle. In his lone full season with the Leafs, he led the team to their first playoff appearance since 2004. But is it possible that his good will with the players has taken a turn south? Many observers have blamed Carlyle for the Leafs defensive system, which has allowed a league-high 36.4 shots on goal per game and league-worst minus-9.2 shot differential. Others argue that the shot totals have been high all year and are nothing new for the Leafs. Their goaltending struggles, however, certainly are. Is the problem in goal? The Leafs relied on the strong play of James Reimer and more specifically Jonathan Bernier to get wins this season, but both have struggled of late. Bernier played 29 gaames with the Leafs this season before getting pulled for the first time on Saturday in a 7-1 loss against the New York Rangers.dddddddddddd He allowed five goals on 32 shots in just under two periods of play. And Bernier struggled again the next time out against the New York Islanders, allowing four goals on 24 shots, three of them that Carlyle said Bernier wanted back. The Leafs lost again, 5-3. The team turned back to Reimer on Thursday night against the Carolina Hurricanes, but he allowed six goals on 36 shots and the team lost its third straight game, 6-1. As TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger noted on TSN Radio 1050 on Friday morning, the Leafs, "played 60 minutes like they were killing a 5-on-3." At the same time, Torontos offence hasnt been anywhere near good enough to make up for the defensive shortfall. The Leafs top two scorers, Phil Kessel and James van Riemsdyk, have just one point between them over the last three games. The losing skid could be attributed to many things, but is it as simple as a Winter Classic hangover? The Leafs played most of December under the watchful eyes of television cameras documenting their lives, on and off the ice, for HBOs 24/7 Winter Classic series. When they won the game and shook their opponents hands at centre ice, the camera crews packed up and life was supposed to return to normal. But since then victories have been hard to come by. And now the Leafs find themselves on the outside looking in for a playoff spot with just under half the season remaining and Olympic break four weeks away. The time has come to ask, whats wrong with the Toronto Maple Leafs? As always, its Your! Call. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers re-signed non-import safety Dan West on Friday as well as import wide receiver Antonio Robinson. West has played in 27 games over the last two seasons with the Bombers, recording two defensive tackles and 17 special teams tackles. He was originally signed as a free agent in May of 2012. Robinson played his college football at Nicholls State, where he finished his career there with 47 receptions for 992 yards and 10 TDs, while rushing 24 times for 249 yards, two majors. He also returned 28 kickoffs in 2009 for 549 yards. In 20 career games there, he finished with 1,790 all-purpose yards. He spent the 2010 and 2011 seasons with the Green Bay Packers on their practice squad, then joined the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League in 2012, and the New Orleans VooDoo of the Arena Football League in 2013. One out away from finishing off an impressive shutout, they let a must-win game slip away.Chris Morris cracked eight sixes in an unbeaten 82 off 32 balls for Delhi Daredevils but it wasnt enough for them to win a fourth straight game in the IPL, losing to Gujarat Lions by one run in a thrilling contest in the Indian capital. It was a tale of two halves, in both innings, as Gujarat raced through to 110-0 from their first 10 overs after being asked to bat first, but lost 62-6 in the second 10.In contrast, Delhi were 51-3 at the midway point of their reply, before Morris helped the hosts launch 120 from the final 10, but it wasnt to be enough. The win returns Gujarat to the top of the IPL table having won their fifth game in six, while Delhi are third, having suffered their first defeat in four. The game got off to flying start as Gujarat openers Brendon McCullum (60 off 36 balls) and Dwayne Smith (53 off 30) both cracked quick-fire fifties.Smith struck four boundaries, albeit three streakily edged down to third man, as 18 runs were scored from Zaheer Khans opening over. The panel discuss the thrilling match between Gujarat Lions and Delhi Daredevils. The Lions won by one run in an instant classic Smith more emphatically powered a couple of sixes over the ropes in the next few overs as Gujarat raced through to fifty in four overs, the fastest team to fifty in the tournament.McCullum cleared the boundary twice too, but only just with his first effort, Sanju Samson palming the ball over with his dropped catch at deep cover with McCullum on just two.ddddddddddddThe former New Zealand skipper would make Delhi pay with a 27-ball fifty, while Smith reached his own half century in one ball fewer, bringing up the milestone with his third six.Soon after though Smith was gone, out lbw to Imran Tahir (3-24), while Morris (2-35) impressed initially with the ball in hand, bowling McCullum and removing Suresh Raina for two in the same over, to further limit the Lions.Gujarat struggled to regain their free-flowing run-scoring of their openers for the rest of their innings, with Tahir striking twice more and JP Duminy once, though James Faulkner did contribute a handy unbeaten 22 from 13.Dhawal Kulkarni (3-19) took three wickets in his opening spell - his first over a wicket-maiden - accounting for Samson, the in-form Quinton de Kock, and Karun Nair as the Daredevils slumped to 16-3 in their first four overs.Duminy (48 off 43) rebuilt, finally receiving some support from South African team-mate Morris, who signalled his intent by cracking his third ball for six.Back-to-back maximums from Morris off Pravin Tambe soon followed, before the Delhi allrounder went one better with three in a row off Smith, the second seeing him through to a 17-ball fifty. With just 29 needed from the final three overs, Delhi were suddenly favourites, but Duminy perished to a Dwayne Bravo slower ball and Praveen Kumar bowled a terrific penultimate over costing just four runs.It left 14 runs for Delhi to get from the final over, the first ball of which Morris smacked for four thanks to a Faulkner misfield, and despite some further poor fielding from Gujarat, they held on for a nail-biting one-run win.Watch continued coverage of the IPL on Sky Sports, with the next live action seeing Mumbai Indians face Kolkata Knight Riders from 3pm on Sky Sports 2 on Thursday. BALTIMORE -- The Baltimore Orioles have placed first baseman Chris Davis on paternity leave and added catcher Nick Hundley, who was obtained in a trade with San Diego on Saturday. Davis and his wife, Jill, are expecting their first child. He is expected to miss games Sunday and Monday before joining the Orioles in Milwaukee on Tuesday. Obtained in a trade for Troy Patton, Hundley joined the Orioles on Sunday. Orioles manager Buck Showalter planned to give Hundley the day off to let him get acclimated with his new surroundings. Also Sunday, the Orioles recalled right-hander Preston Guilmet from Triple-A Norfolk and optioned infielder Steve Lombardozzi to the same minor league club. Lombardozzi joined the Orioles on Saturday to fill out the roster while the team was waiting for Hundley to arrive. Omri Casspi Jersey . "Im sure were gonna be dealing with some rain at some point," Scioscia said about two hours before the scheduled first pitch. "Whether it impacts the game, I dont know. "I dont know if you ever know in Chicago, do you?" The game was postponed because of rain and rescheduled as part of a traditional doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 4:10 p.m. Angels right-hander Garrett Richards (8-2, 2.76) and Chicagos Hector Noesi (2-4, 4.18) — the scheduled starters Monday — will pitch Game 1, with Los Angeles Jered Weaver (8-6, 3.33) and Scott Carroll (2-4, 4.76) pitching the nightcap. The Angels had been undecided for the series finale on Wednesday, but named left-hander Tyler Skaggs (4-4, 4.34) to pitch that game following the postponement. Skaggs currently is on the disabled list since June 10 with a strained right hamstring. The White Sox will start left-hander John Danks (7-6, 4.26). With the addition of Skaggs, the Angels would have six starters, but Scioscia declined to say what move would be made from there. "Skaggs on Wednesday, and well let you know the rest," he said. "Well get through tomorrow and see where we are." The White Sox thought there would be a window to play Mondays game though the storm was expected to hit the ballpark around game time. It wasnt raining at 7:10, the time of the scheduled first pitch, but the rain bbegan a few minutes later.dddddddddddd The game surprisingly was called after just a 20-minute delay because the forecast changed and the rain was supposed to last longer. The extra time off was probably welcome for Albert Pujols, who is dealing with a groin injury, but was in the lineup Monday at first base. "He feels good," Scioscia said of Pujols. "Its not really anything thats muscular or anything were worried about being a pull. Its really just something . the way it was described our medical staff, its more of a lymph node or just a little infection that got a little irritated. "It shouldnt be anything thats gonna impact what he needs to do." Pujols was in Monday nights starting lineup set to hit third and play first base. NOTES: White Sox 1B Jose Abreu, tied for the MLB lead in homers with 25, has found himself at the centre of Home Run Derby speculation, but the rookie slugger remained mysterious on his possible participation. "Im more concentrated on helping the team right now," he said. ... RHP Fernando Salas (shoulder) threw 25 pitches during a bullpen session Sunday and could be activated as early as Wednesday. "Hes gonna throw a bullpen (Tuesday) and then be evaluated," Scioscia said. "He felt really good after his pen on Sunday." ... Asked before the game whether RHP Jason Grilli, acquired from Pittsburgh on Friday, would be his new closer, Scioscia said: "Well keep Joe Smith there until we get everything sorted out. Jason will be part of our back end and well see." After game three of the NBA Finals, US expert Alex Ferguson assesses whether the Cleveland Cavaliers can continue their comeback against the Golden State Warriors. Cleveland completed a crushing 120-90 victory in Game 3, trimming Golden States series lead to 2-1 in the NBA Finals, but can the Cavaliers dethrone the reigning champions?Alex Ferguson looks ahead… LeBron James sparked to life after a lacklustre start to the series After being savaged in Oakland by the Golden State Warriors in the first two games of the NBA Finals, Cleveland looked completely and utterly lost.Kyrie Irving couldnt hit a thing, LeBron James was turning the ball over like your dear writer does whenever he plays pick-up games with friends, and the only sound JR Smith heard when hitting a three was clunk as ball hit metal and flew out.On the other side, the Warriors survived without explosive performances from either Steph Curry or Klay Thompson. That was because everyone else was sharp and Cleveland simply could not compete. Steph Curry is yet to display his best form for the Warriors How are Cleveland going to get back into this? people said, shaking their heads.Immediately, they decided to blame LeBron James. After all, he is the best player on the court. He should be taking Golden State apart on his own, right?Although James had not had a great first two games (especially his 11 total turnovers, including a seven turnover performance in Game 2), it was not all about James.Irving and Smith were a shambles, and Kevin Love - who seems to be the king of injuries when it comes to important games - was sidelined with a concussion that limited his play. No one else off Clevelands bench could even come close to Draymond Green, Shaun Livingston, Leandro Barbosa and Harrison Barnes.Cleveland might have the best player in the finals, but Golden State has the second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh. How are they meant to compete? said one member of the US media. But, if you go back to it all, Cleveland really came apart in the third quarter of Game 1.After facing a double-digit deficit, the Cavaliers roared back to lead the game, quietening the voracious Golden State crowd. But as they missed two or three shots in a row, Golden State made theirs - all from three-point range.Suddenly a deficit of one was a deficit of 10 and the rest of the game - and Game 2 - wasnt even a competition. Funny what a few missed shots can do against a great shooting team.Back to Cleveland Klay Thompson has been hampered by a fresh injury Well, Cleveland had to compete in Game 3, and they did so. Actually, it wasnt a competition. That would have been too nice to describe what happened in Game 3. It was a hammering. At the start of the game, Curry had more fouls than he did points, and by the end of the game, his 19 points belied his worst three-point shooting game since Game 4 against Oklahoma City. Thompson, his splash brother, had to come off with a thigh injury which hardly helped matters either. He came back in, but by then it was too late. There was a patch in the second quarter during which Cleveland could not get anything to hit and the Warriors closed to a makeable eight-point deficit at half-time. LeBron and Kyrie went colder than a January night in Newcastle and Harrison Barnes was leading the charge. But in the third quarter, Clevelands energy returned and by the middle of the fourth quarter, Golden State head coach Steve Kerr was putting up the white flag and sending in the reserves. What will happen in Game 4?I have a sneaky suspicion that Cleveland will win Game 4 on Friday night. They have (some) momentum back and they suddenly believe a bit more after an unbelievably bad first two games in Oakland. All they have to do is keep LeBron, Irving and Smith hot and Curry cold. QUARTERBACKS Nick Foles (at Green Bay)Last week: 22/28, 406 yards, 7 TDsFoles, a now record-tying NFL QB thanks to his seven touchdown performance against the Oakland Raiders in Week 9, is owned by only a quarter of teams. Thats a lot of needy teams that missed out on his 40+ point performance. The former third-rounder has been impressive all year long in spot duty for the injured Michael Vick and is all but guaranteed to be the Eagles starter the rest of the year. Hes not going to throw seven touchdowns every week but he could be a borderline QB1, something almost impossible to find on the waiver wire this late in the season. EJ Manuel (at Pittsburgh)Last week: InjuredManuel was given the green light to return to action with the Bills on Monday and with that comes the green light to be picked up again by fantasy teams. Prior to Manuels knee injury, the rookie was averaging 13 points per game and, if his progression with a decent looking Bills offence continues throughout the year, hes worth adding, especially if you need a bye week fill-in over the next couple weeks. Case Keenum (at Cardinals)Last week: 20/34, 350 yards, 3 TDsKeenum was outstanding in his debut for the Texans and gave fans in Houston, after too much of Matt Schaub in recent years, hope for the future. The young, undrafted free agent doesnt appear to be afraid of taking chances and with a premier receiver like Andre Johnson on the other end of his passes, that could be a good thing. Keenum is a gunslinger and, while I wouldnt be surprised to see his interception totals spike in coming weeks, he should be always be good for healthy yardage totals. Jason Campbell (Bye)Last week: 23/35, 262 yards, 3 TDsAfter years of having nothing go right in Cleveland, nothing can seemingly go wrong for the Browns this year. Its still likely not enough to get the Browns in the playoffs, but their players can benefit fantasy teams with some big weeks. Jason Campbell, the third quarterback to start a game for Cleveland, had a huge game against the defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens. The veteran hurt his ribs in Week 9 but should be fine when the Browns return from their bye week against the Cincinnati Bengals. If youve got room on your bench, Campbell could be worth an add. Others: Kellen Clemons (at Colts), Christian Ponder (vs Redskins) RUNNING BACKS Andre Brown (vs Raiders)Last week: InjuredBrown confirmed on Monday that hell be returning from the IR designated to return to make his season debut in Week 10, and with it the Giants hope their running back nightmare of 2013 is over. While its unlikely Brown will be the solution to all the Giants rushing problems, he could be for a needy fantasy team. Its hard to tell how effective Brown will be but he should get the most touches out of New Yorks backfield and that alone is worth a couple FAAB dollars. Donald Brown (vs Rams)Last week: 6 carries, 49 yardsBrown is just the second most owned running back in the Colts backfield (by a longshot behind Trentt Richardson) but he shouldnt be.ddddddddddddSince Richardsons acquisition Brown has proven to be the more effective back. While the two are likely looking at a timeshare in the backfield the rest of the way, Brown is the third-down back, lending to more passing opportunities. The former first-rounder was held to just six carries and 49 yards on Sunday Night but that was more because Indy was engaged in an aerial battle with the Texans; his carries should increase in coming weeks. Rashad Jennings (at Giants)Last week: 15 carries, 102 yards, 7 catches, 74 yards, 1 TDFor the second time this year, and seemingly millionth time in his career, Darren McFadden left a game with an injury for the Raiders. Jennings stepped in and stepped up, accumulating 176 total yards in Oaklands blowout loss to the Eagles. If McFaddens injury keeps him out in Week 10, the Raiders will have no problem feeding Jennings the rock against the Raiders. The former Jaguars backup has been the teams best back even when McFadden is healthy. Ben Tate (at Cardinals)Last week: 22 carries, 81 yardsThis suggestion is contingent on Arian Fosters injury status for Week 10 but since we likely wont know that until waiver bids are due, err on the side of caution and look to grab Tate. What we do know is that if Tate gets the start for an injured Foster, hes done enough over the past couple seasons to prove hes a decent RB2 if given a starters workload. Others: Jonathan Stewart (at 49ers), Daniel Thomas (at Buccaneers) WIDE RECEIVERS Riley Cooper (at Packers)Last week: 5 catches, 139 yards, 3 TDsAfter his early season controversy, it seems Cooper and the Eagles can coexist. After weeks of putting up below average fantasy scores, Cooper exploded in the Eagles rout of the Raiders. Cooper wont score three TDs every week but if the chemistry he appeared to have with likely new full-time starter Nick Foles continues to manifest, hell be an intriguing WR3/flex option in Philadelphia. Marlon Brown (vs Bengals)Last week: 5 catches, 54 yards, 2 TDsThe undrafted free agent had a big Week 9 against the Browns, and looks to be working his way towards more targets in the Ravens offence. Brown is nothing more than a bye week fill-in at the moment – through nine weeks hes averaging only about five points per week but his nine Week 9 targets were a team high, suggesting Joe Flacco could look to the young receiver more in the second half of the season. Others: Kris Durham (at Bears), Nate Washington (vs Jaguars) TIGHT ENDS Tim Wright (vs Dolphins)Last week: 4 catches, 58 yards, 1 TDWright could be an interesting add at the tight end position. The undrafted free agent is averaging six targets in his six games this season and while that has translated to just an average of 32 yards per game, if he can find the end zone on a more consistent basis – like he did last week in the Bucs near upset of the Seahawks – hes worth a flyer. Wright could have some chemistry with Tampas rookie QB Mike Glennon which would certainly help his fantasy stock. LIVERPOOL, England - Raheem Sterling found a way past formidable Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois with an exquisite solo goal to earn Liverpool a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their English League Cup semifinal on Tuesday. It needed something special to beat Courtois at Anfield and Sterling delivered in the 59th minute, picking up the ball 40 metres from goal, turning and speeding away from Chelseas defence before applying a low finish. That cancelled out an 18th-minute penalty won and converted by Eden Hazard in the only shot on goal Chelsea produced in a defensive performance that saw the Premier League leaders outplayed at times, especially in the second half. They are a top side but Im not sure theyve had a game like that this season, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said. I thought the performance was a benchmark. There is absolutely no doubt we can go to the second leg and get the performance we need.Chelsea will be relieved to come away on level terms and is the marginal favourite heading into the return match at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday. After a slow start to the season, though, Liverpool has rediscovered its identity and intensity that almost took the team to the Premier League title last season. The Reds are unbeaten in nine games.Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho grumbled about his sides poor distribution but that was due to the pressure being applied by Liverpool, which is seeking to extend its record of eight titles in the League Cup.The visitors had only two shots in a game played in light snowfall, one of which ended in the net when Hazard picked himself up after being fouled by makeshift defender Emre Can to send goalkeeper Simon Mignolet the wrong way from the spot. After that, it was all Liverpool and only Courtois brilliance denied them a lead to take to London. He tipped Liverpool captain Steven Gerrards long-range strike over the bar in the first half and produced a string of fine saves after the break — the best from a fierce strike by Adam Lallana that the Belgium international palmed away, right-handed.Of course, after all the chances, we have to be happy with the result, Courtois said. They were dangerous and it was difficult for us.Gerrard, seeking one last appearance at Wembley Stadium before his summer move to Los Angeles Galaxy, struck the post with a left-footed curling shot as Liverpool came close to a second. Courtois was also lucky to escape without punishment when he carried the ball outside his area after sliding to collect a long pass. The League Cup is one of four trophies Chelsea is chasing this season and probably the lowest of manager Mourinhos priorities. But the Londoners fielded their strongest possible lineup after playing weakened teams earlier in the competition.Of course after the all the chances we have to happy with the result. They were dangerous and it was a difficult for us. We were not at our best but a 1-1 score is good for the second leg.Tottenham plays third-tier Sheffield United in the other semifinal, with the first leg on Wednesday.Thibaut (Courtois) has been doing this all season, save after save. He showed what a world-class goalkeeper he is. Anibal Sanchez Jersey . MANCHESTER, England -- England defender Luke Shaw became the worlds most expensive teenage player on Friday and Manchester Uniteds second signing in 24 hours following its worst English Premier League campaign. The 18-year-old left back joined United from Southampton, reportedly for more than 27 million pounds ($46 million), straight after returning from his first World Cup with England. Southampton confirmed the deal made Shaw "the most expensive teenager ever," which would eclipse fees of around 26 million pounds ($44 million) that saw Wayne Rooney join Manchester United in 2004 and Marquinhos sign for Paris Saint-Germain last year. Shaw signed a four-year contract, with an option to extend for a further year if he continues to develop as one of the most exciting youngsters in football. "I want to continue to progress my career and joining United is the ideal place for me to do that," Shaw said in a statement. Louis van Gaal doesnt officially take charge at United until his World Cup campaign as Netherlands manager is over, but players are being signed ready for the Dutchmans arrival. United paid around $50 million for Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera the day before Shaws arrival. The record 20-time English champions are spending early in the summer transfer wiindow after dithering last year in the post-Alex Ferguson era led to an alarming, and costly, slump on the pitch.dddddddddddd David Moyes was fired just before the season ended with United going from 2013 champions to seventh-place finishers last month. Uniteds management has convinced Shaw to join them despite the lack of Champions League football next season. Having already made 67 first-team appearances at Southampton, Shaw will be hoping he isnt just the backup to 33-year-old Patrice Evra at left back. "Luke is a very talented young left back with great potential," assistant manager Ryan Giggs said. "He has developed immensely during his time at Southampton." Shaw usurped Ashley Cole as backup to Leighton Baines in the England World Cup squad, leading to the Chelsea veterans international retirement. Shaw, who made his international debut only in March, won his third cap in Tuesdays 0-0 draw with Costa Rica before Englands early exit from Brazil. Shaw is the latest departure from Southampton since the south-coast club achieved its highest-ever Premier League points tally to finish eighth in May. Manager Mauricio Pochettino left for Tottenham, striker Rickie Lambert joined Liverpool, and midfielder Adam Lallana is also set for a move to Anfield. NEW YORK -- When the ball went up, Brian McCann thought it was the second out of the inning. And when it came down, the Yankees had a three-game sweep. Jacoby Ellsbury got four hits and scored the winning run in the ninth on McCanns pop-fly single that dropped near three Cincinnati Reds in shallow right field, giving New York a 3-2 victory Sunday. "Ill take it, for sure," McCann said with a laugh. "I saw that everybody was looking at each other. So there was a chance, and luckily for us it fell." Ellsbury and Derek Jeter each had an RBI single in the fifth inning for the Yankees. Hiroki Kuroda outpitched Cincinnati ace Johnny Cueto and left with a 2-1 lead before Todd Fraziers tying homer off Dellin Betances in the eighth. Ellsbury also stole two bases and made a sliding catch in centre field that saved a run. "He can do anything on the baseball field. He showed all his tools today. He does this on a nightly basis," McCann said. Ellsbury reached safely all five times up, including a leadoff single in the ninth against Aroldis Chapman (0-3). Before that, left-handed hitters had been 1 for 18 with 12 strikeouts against the hard-throwing Cuban this season. Ellsbury got a great jump and swiped second without a throw. He reached third on a wild pitch before Chapman struck out Mark Teixeira with a 101 mph fastball. McCann, another left-handed batter, lifted a popup that barely reached the outfield grass behind first base. But with the infield playing in, Frazier and second baseman Skip Schumaker scurried back trying to get under the ball as Jay Bruce rushed in from right field. "It is anybodys ball," Frazier said. "If you can get to it, it is your ball." All three appeared to have a hard time finding it in the air, however, and the ball landed untouched. Ellsbury alertly saw what was happening and dashed home easily as McCann stood on first base with his arms raised. "You dont see that too often," Ellsbury said. "Its just a read that you have to make pretty quick." Chapman stared out toward shallow right field, where Frazier, Schumaker and Bruce were practically frozen in disbelief. "Just one of those things -- I thought I was under it and I was not," Frazier said. "By the time the ball was coming down it was already too late so, I made a mistake, turned my body the wrong way and, one of those things where I should have caught it." Centre fielder Billy Hamilton had trouble with the sun earlier, allowing Ellsburys seventh-inning fly to fall for a double. David Robertson (1-2) pitched a perfect ninth. It was New Yorks second walk-off win this season and the fifth game-ending hit for McCann -- his first since a home run for Atlanta against Houston on May 17, 2011. The 39-year-old Kuroda gave up three hits and no earned runs over 6 2-3 innings in his 200th major league appearance. "He was great," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Did a wonderful job today." After losing their sixth straight road game, a season high, the Reds are 2-5 without injured sluggers Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips. Cueto threw 112 pitches in five innings, matching his shortest start this season. "I felt really strong today," he said through a translator. "I would have kept going even with the amount of pitches I had." Frazier won a matchup of All-Stars when he lofted Betances full-count pitch into the left-field corner, just beyond the 318-foot sign. It was the first home run at Yankee Stadium for Frazier, who grew up about 85 miles away in Toms River, New Jersey. He pumped his fists at home plate and received hearty high-fives in the dugout. Betances has allowed two homers in 58 1-3 innings this season. "I think we were all a little bit shocked when it happened," Girardi said. Moments earlier, Schumaker made a costly baserunning mistake. He singled to start the inning and, with Frazier at the plate, took off trying to steal second before Betances began his delivery. The big right-hander stepped off the rubber, and Schumaker was tagged out after a long rundown. Schumaker, just off the seven-day concussion disabled list, had an RBI double with two outs in the fifth. It was Cincinnatis only hit in 22 at-bats with runners in scoring position during the series. "They just outplayed us," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "Some of the things that happened in the series (were) unfortunate." "Theyre my former club, but Im a Tiger now, and its just about winning games. It really doesnt matter who its against," Kinsler said. "Its more fun, because I know those guys and theyre friends, and its always fun to beat friends, but other than that, Im a Tiger, and Im trying to win for this club." Kinsler doubled three times and scored three runs, and Detroit snapped its four-game losing streak with a 7-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Friday night. Kinsler was traded from Texas to the Tigers in an off-season blockbuster that sent Prince Fielder to the Rangers. Fielder was put on the disabled list before the game with what is likely to be a season-ending neck problem. Austin Jackson and Andrew Romine homered for Detroit, and Anibal Sanchez (2-2) allowed two runs and five hits over seven innings. He struck out five without a walk. Scott Baker (0-1) allowed six runs and eight hits for the Rangers in six innings. The AL Central-leading Tigers were finally facing some adversity after allowing 31 runs in their previous four games. Their recent road trip included travel problems and a 13-inning loss at Cleveland on Wednesday. Then they came home and played a day game Thursday against Texas, losing 9-2. "We probably were a little bit tired, but thats no excuse for this ballclub, and tonight we just looked sharper," Kinsler said. "We looked well rested and ready to play." The Tigers fell behind again when Sanchez allowed two runs in the second, but Baker didnt hold the lead for long. Jackson tied it with a two-run homer in the second, and Kinsler and Miguel Cabrera started the Detroit third with back-to-back doubles. Detroit scored two more runs in the fifth on an RBI double by Kinsler and a run-scoring grounder by Torii Hunter. Sanchez, who won the 2013 ERA title in the American League, hadnt made it through seven innings this season before Friday. This was his second start since missing around three weeks with a finger injury on his throwing hand.dddddddddddd. "He pitched a really good game, especially once he got into a rhythm after the second," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "We didnt do a thing against him after that. He had a good breaking ball and he was keeping everything down. Give him a lot of credit." Mitch Moreland opened the scoring for Texas with a two-run double, but Sanchez allowed only two harmless singles after that. Baker, the 10th pitcher to start a game for the Rangers already this season, couldnt hold off the Tigers in the middle innings. Even Romine got in on the act in the sixth, ending a 2-for-35 stretch with a homer down the line in right that gave the Tigers a 6-2 lead. It was his first career home run. "I knew that it was hard enough, I just didnt know if it was going to stay fair, because I saw it hook, and obviously I had the best angle," Romine said. "Im thinking, God, that ball better stay fair, because I dont know what else I have to do to get a hit right now." Hunter added an RBI groundout in the seventh. OTTAWA - The expansion Ottawa Redblacks bolstered their defence on Wednesday with the signing of defensive back Jovon Johnson and linebacker Malik Jackson. Johnson was the CFLs most valuable defensive player back in 2011 when he recorded eight interceptions, 55 tackles and two defensive touchdowns with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. In seven seasons, the five-foot-nine, 189-pound native of Erie, Penn., has 372 tackles, 23 interceptions and six defensive touchdowns. The 30-year-old Johnson has also returned 57 kickoffs for 1,276 yards and 314 punts for 2,934 yards and three touchdowns. A six-foot-two, 225-pound native of Dunwoody, Ga., Jackson joins the Redblacks after five years with the Calgary Stampeders. Penas second career pinch-homer started Cincinnatis big eighth-inning rally and swept the Reds over the Milwaukee Brewers 8-3 Thursday night. The Reds hit three homers in all as they pulled within 6 1/2 games of the NL Central leaders. Tucker Barnhart led off the fifth with his first career homer. Todd Frazier added a two-run drive in the sixth off Marco Estrada, who gave up six hits and four walks in six innings. Pena had homered during a 9-4 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night. He batted for Bailey with the score tied at 3 in the eighth and connected on the first pitch from Jim Henderson (2-1) for a two-run homer. "I was just thinking about driving the ball and hitting it hard somewhere," Pena said. "He got a pitch up and I was able to take advantage of it. I wasnt expecting a homer, but Ill take it." Cincinnati sent 11 batters to the plate while scoring five times during the inning against a bullpen that entered the series with the fourth-best ERA in the league. It had one very bad inning. "Theyre going to happen, no doubt," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "Weve been good down there. We just werent good tonight." Homer Bailey (2-2) allowed eight hits in a season-high eight innings, finally returning to form after missing much of spring training with a strained groin. "This game was good for all of us," Bailey said. "Were fixing to turn things around. Weve had a lot happen already this year. This one showed were starting to come together as a group." Milwaukee has lost back-to-back games for only the second time this season. The Brewers havent dropped more than two in a row. Cincinnati opened the four-game series with another injury. Leadoff hitter Billy Hamilton sprained knuckles on his left hand while making a diving catch in centre field and will miss a few games. Hamilton stretched all out to reach Carlos Gomezs line drive that opened the game. He grimaced and flexed his left hand and wrist as he gott up.dddddddddddd Chris Heisey hit for him in the bottom of the inning. Hamilton hurt the middle finger on his left hand while sliding into base during the opening week of the season and missed two games. "Unfortunately, its the same hand that he hurt in New York," manager Bryan Price said. "Were optimistic that hell only miss a day or two, but we wont know for a day or two." Gomez stole a hit from Joey Votto in the bottom of the first, catching his fly at the top of the wall in centre. Votto pointed two fingers toward Gomez, who also stole a potential go-ahead homer from him for the final out in Milwaukees 4-3 win last July 8. Jean Segura singled in a run in the second, and Gomez doubled home a pair of two-out runs to tie it 3-all in the seventh. Milwaukee got two players back in the lineup, but outfielder Ryan Braun missed his fifth game because of a strained oblique. Braun is expected back this weekend. Segura returned at shortstop after being out of the starting lineup for four games because of an injury to his face. Third baseman Aramis Ramirez was back after missing two games with a sore left elbow and went hitless, extending his slump to 0 for 25. Outfielder Logan Schafer is eligible to return from the disabled list on Saturday, recovered from a strained right hamstring. For now, Roenicke is using Mark Reynolds in right field, a position the infielder played during spring training. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Matt Moore has undergone elbow ligament replacement surgery and could be sidelined 12 to 15 months. The Rays announced Tuesday that the surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews on the 24-year-old Moore, who made the AL All-Star team last year. Moore left his start on April 7 in Kansas City due to elbow soreness, and was placed on the 15-day disabled list the following day. Also Tuesday, Tampa Bay activated reliever Juan Carlos Oviedo from the 15-day disabled list. Oviedo had right elbow ligament replacement surgery in September 2012. Just like that, a four-game losing streak and a forgettable weekend were washed away. Brantley homered with two outs in the 10th inning off Al Alburquerque, giving the Cleveland Indians a 5-4 win over the drowsy Detroit Tigers on Monday night. Brantley connected on a 3-2 pitch from Alburquerque (1-1), driving it into the Tigers bullpen to end Clevelands four-game slide. Brantley held onto his bat until he nearly reached first base, unsure if the ball was going to clear the wall. "I was nervous," Brantley said. "I didnt know what do." After rounding third, Brantley flung his helmet to the side and received a wet welcome home. He was sprayed with bottles of water and then drenched by a bucket dumped over his head during a postgame interview. "It was cold," he said. It was worth it. Brantleys homer warmed the Indians, who have seen errors and losses pile up lately. Over the weekend, they were outscored 30-6 in being swept by Oakland. With the first-place Tigers in town, the Indians couldnt afford to fall any further in the AL Central, and Brantley gave them a dramatic win in the opener. "As long as we win, thats the main thing," manager Terry Francona said. "But the way it ended -- that was great." Scott Atchison (1-0) pitched a perfect 10th, retiring Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez for the first two outs. Detroits J.D. Martinez hit a pinch-hit homer in the ninth off Cody Allen to tie it 4-all, but the Tigers couldnt muster more magic in extra innings. The Tigers, who arrived just three hours before the first pitch because of travel delays from Boston, had their 11-game road winning streak ended. "We knew the game would end at some point, and wed be able to go back and get some sleep," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "We were hoping to go back and get some sleep with a win, but it wasnt to be." Rookie Jesus Aguilar had two RBIs for the Indians. Martinez hit his 11th homer for the Tigers, who despite the loss have won 19 of the last 26 against Cleveland. With Detroit two outs from losing its road winning streak, Martinez homered off interim closer Allen to tie it 4-all. Battingg for shortstop Andrew Romine, Martinez drove a 1-0 pitch over the wall in centre, just over the glove of leaping outfielder Michael Bourn at the wall.dddddddddddd It was Martinezs first homer in 40 at-bats and it came at the perfect time for the sleep-deprived Tigers, who earlier rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie it in the fifth. The Indians took a 4-3 lead in the seventh on Aguilars sacrifice fly. Cleveland badly needed a strong outing, and Corey Kluber came through. The right-hander allowed eight hits and struck out eight in seven innings. He contained the ALs best hitting club and didnt show any fear while pitching inside to Cabrera, who didnt seem pleased with the right-handers challenge. Kluber set the tone early when he started Cabrera off with a high, inside pitch in the first that annoyed baseballs most feared hitter. Cabrera took his time getting back into the batters box as Kluber waited patiently. Cabrera, who came in batting .417 with three homers against Kluber, struck out and then shot a menacing stare toward the right-hander. "I saw him looking at me," Kluber said, "and I just ignored it. You got to keep them honest." The Tigers, who walked into Progressive Field wearing pajama-like travel suits after their long day, tied it 3-3 in the seventh on a two-run double by No. 9 hitter Rajai Davis.
