What would you have done? Thats the question a lot of golf fans were asking themselves after Hunter Mahan had to withdraw from the RBC Canadian Open last year to be home for the birth of his daughter. Mahan, of course, was leading the tournament at the time, which made the exit that much more dramatic. Now as any parent knows, theres nothing like being in the delivery room to see your child come into the world. And Mahan wasnt going to miss that. "Its always one of those things for golfers," he said. "What if you had to go home and you were in the lead on Sunday or Saturday. It is kind of one of those crazy things you think about and discuss with your family and your wife, but most of the time it never really happens." But it did happen to Mahan, of course. And no one questioned his departure, which worked perfectly thanks to a friend with a private jet that was sitting in Toronto. "I talked to the doctor and he said youve got plenty of time, its not one of those things that you have to rush, even though I was going to do everything I could to get there as soon as possible. So I hung up the phone and started the process of trying to get home." Not everyone would have made the same choice as Mahan, however. Ive talked to other pros who say they may have stayed and played. Most of those were less established players, ones who didnt have the security of a PGA Tour card locked up or a bank account with millions in it. The thinking goes that dad could probably better provide for his new child by getting the win on the PGA Tour. Theres no easy choice, thats for sure. Obviously Mahan made the right one for him. Food For Thought And its not all about golf for Mahan. He took Tuesday off from swinging the clubs to recharge the batteries after a long week at the British Open. He did a little walking around in Montreal and had lunch at Schwartzs Deli - of course it was Montreal Smoked Meat. "Thats a must," he said. Gone Streaking Mike Weir was in the interview room and I was surprised - although I probably shouldnt have been - when he said this was his 24th Open. That makes him old, but it makes me older. I think his best answer of the Q&A was when he was asked about the 60-year drought of Canadians winning the tournament. "It would be a nice streak to get over so we dont have to talk about it anymore." Amen to that. The Strokes Jim Furyk comes into the Open well rested. Prior to the British, he took a month off, the first time hes done that in his career. But its not surprising that he and other players are playing fewer events in the weeks leading up to this stretch. Thats because most of the top names are playing nine or 10 or 11 events through the FedEx Cup playoffs and, if they qualify, the Ryder Cup. Furyk is pretty much a lock to make that team. Of course no player has it worse than Brandt Snedeker. Two of his major sponsors are RBC and Wyndham, which host non-major, non-WGC events in that stretch. If he plays all four playoff events hell play nine consecutive weeks. BALTIMORE -- Miguel Gonzalez was desperate for a win. So were the Baltimore Orioles. Both got what they needed against the skidding Chicago White Sox. Gonzalez allowed one run over seven innings and Baltimore got solo home runs from Adam Jones, J.J. Hardy and Brian Roberts in a 3-1 victory Thursday night. The Orioles were coming off a 3-6 road trip that left them four games off the pace in the AL wild-card race. Although its probably too early to talk about must-win games, this one was pretty close. "Its definitely a good way to start the homestand," Hardy said. "Our backs are kind of against the wall and we need to win. We need to get on a streak, and this is a good start." After losing series in Boston, New York and Cleveland, Baltimore was delighted to come home for a four-game series against the last-place White Sox. "We need wins," Jones said. "Thats all its about. We need a win." Jones shot in the first inning gave him 30 home runs for the season and 100 RBIs for the first time. Hardy and Roberts connected in the fifth, increasing Baltimores major league-leading home run total to 188. "We didnt put together a ton of hits, but the way the pitching and defence was tonight, three was enough," Hardy said. Gonzalez (9-7) gave up four hits -- all singles -- walked one and struck out six to earn his first win in seven starts since July 20. He was 0-4 in that span. "It was a long time since I got a win," he said. "It was fun to be out there and be able to go a little bit deeper than in other games and getting a win that was important for us." Tommy Hunter allowed a single in the eighth and Jim Johnson worked a perfect ninth for his 42nd save. "Theyre all significant from here on out just because of the opportunities that are not there," manager Buck Showalter said. "If we take care of business, it will be an interesting last week of the season. Youll usually like the outcome if you just try to stay in the moment. Its difficult to do. It takes a lot of discipline." Dayan Viciedo had two hits for the White Sox, who have dropped seven straight as they stagger to the conclusion of a losing season. Chicago is an AL-worst 24-49 on the road and 32-48 in games decided by one or two runs. "Weve played that type of game a lot this year and just couldnt score enough runs to win," said Paul Konerko, who went 0 for 4. "We try not to think about how other games have gone, but the end result is you can lump this in with the rest of them." Jose Quintana (7-6) allowed seven hits in seven innings, but three of them were homers. The right-hander had allowed only four long balls in his previous 10 starts. "He was all right," manager Robin Ventura said. "The three homers are the ones that got him, but other than that he was pretty sharp." Down 1-0, the White Sox loaded the bases with no outs in the third but got only one run, on a double-play grounder by Alejandro De Aza. "That was our spot," Ventura said. "I mean Gonzalez pitched well, really pitching from behind well. He spotted off-speed stuff and hit his counts. We got him in that situation, he gets a double play to really give himself a breather and get out of it." Hardy put Baltimore in front for good in the fifth with a leadoff homer on a 2-2 pitch, and with two outs Roberts homered on a full count. Hardys drive made him the ninth player since 1901 to have three seasons with at least 25 home runs as a shortstop. Chicago C Tyler Flowers underwent shoulder surgery Thursday to clean up his rotator cuff and labrum. No structural damage was found. Recovery time is approximately 2-3 months. ... Baltimore RF Nick Markakis did not start after going 6 for 36 on the road trip, but he entered as a defensive replacement in the eighth inning. ... Scott Feldman starts for the Orioles on Friday night against John Danks (4-11), who earned one of his four wins this season against Baltimore on July 2. ... Ventura on being the spoiler: "Theres no extra incentive that youre a spoiler but I think we do have guys that are looking toward next year, trying to do something just to get noticed or send a positive note out there." ... It was never close Friday as the Boston Red Sox got to Mark Buehrle early en route to an 8-1 win.CHICAGO -- Working quickly all night long, Kyle Hendricks pitched like a veteran. Its easy to see why the Chicago Cubs feel so comfortable when the rookie right-hander is on the mound. Hendricks pitched 7 1-3 innings of six-hit ball in his third consecutive win, and Chicago cooled off Wily Peralta and the Milwaukee Brewers with a 3-0 victory on Tuesday. "He threw really well," Cubs manager Rick Renteria said. "He repeated his outings in terms of execution, and the calmness he shows out there." Hendricks struck out five and walked one, continuing an impressive opening run for his major league career. The right-hander is 4-1 with a 1.01 ERA in five starts since he got a no-decision in his debut at Cincinnati on July 10. "Every time Im going out there I just feel confident that I can make pitches," said Hendricks, who was acquired in the July 2012 trade that sent Ryan Dempster to Texas. "It grows each start, and its going to keep growing hopefully." Anthony Rizzo hit his 26th homer for Chicago, which had lost three of four. Arismendy Alcantara had two hits and drove in a run after going 1 for 14 through the first four games of the Cubs seven-game homestand. Trying for a major league-high 15th win, Peralta allowed three runs and seven hits in 6 1-3 innings. The right-hander had won each of his last five starts and was 10-1 with a 4.06 ERA in his previous 12 games coming into the night. Peralta (14-7) has lost each of his three starts this season against last-place Chicago. He is 6-0 with a 1.10 ERA in seven games against the rest of the NL Central. "For some reason, they put together good at-bats against me," Peralta said. "As a group, theyre a young team and they have big league hitters. I think Im gonna get another chance to face them and I just want to get a win." The Cubs grabbed the lead on Justin Ruggianos RBI single in the second, and Alcantara added another run-scoring single in the fourth. Allcantaras hit drove in Starlin Castro, who reached on a leadoff double to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, the best such streak for the Cubs this year.dddddddddddd Rizzo then led off the sixth with a towering drive to left for his first homer since July 22. "It was supposed to be down and away and I got it up," Peralta said. "When you work behind this guy, hes a pretty good hitter and hes gonna make you pay for it." Pedro Strop replaced Hendricks (4-1) with the bases loaded in the eighth and got Jonathan Lucroy to ground into an inning-ending double play. Hector Rondon then worked a perfect ninth for his 15th save in 19 chances. The Brewers had won four of five. They had their NL Central lead trimmed to 1 1/2 games over Pittsburgh, which won 4-2 at Detroit. Milwaukee centre fielder Carlos Gomez made a great leaping grab on the warning track in the first, taking extra bases away from Javier Baez. Gomez then was hit by a pitch on his right wrist in the third, but stayed in the game. TRAINERS ROOM Brewers: INFs Jean Segura and Scooter Gennett are playing with quad injuries. Manager Ron Roenicke said Segura is doing a lot better, but Gennett "is still a little bit limited." Cubs: LHP Felix Doubront (strained left calf) struck out seven while pitching four-plus innings in his first rehab appearance with Triple-A Iowa. He was charged with three runs and four hits. ... Castro said he tweaked his left knee, but should be fine. ... Ruggiano was removed after seven innings due to "leg fatigue," Renteria said. UP NEXT Brewers RHP Kyle Lohse (11-6, 3.33 ERA) and Cubs LHP Tsuyoshi Wada (1-1, 3.25 ERA) are slated to start the third game of the series Wednesday night. Lohse is 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA in two starts against Chicago this season, including a three-hitter in a 9-0 victory on June 1. Wada is making his first appearance against Milwaukee and his sixth career start overall. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- All those records, all for naught. Peyton Manning couldnt cap the greatest season any NFL quarterback ever had or secure his legacy as the best QB in history because his Denver Broncos came down with a case of the yips Sunday night. They lost to Seattle in the Super Bowl 43-8 by falling behind right from the start and never recovering. The bumbling Broncos trailed before Manning ever got his hands on the ball because Manny Ramirezs bad snap went for a safety 12 seconds into the game. "It was a crazy start," Manning said, "not the way you expect to start the game." It only got worse for the leagues most prolific point producers who scored 606 of em in the regular season, then dominated the AFC in the playoffs but mustered only Demaryius Thomas 14-yard touchdown catch on the final play of the third quarter at MetLife Stadium. "We couldnt get it to swing, man," left tackle Chris Clark said. "We tried, but they just played better than we did today. It didnt shift. We didnt play Broncos football today. When you got a good thing going, you want to finish it off and we didnt do that today." Dominated in every way, the Broncos (15-4) trudged through the tunnel trailing 22-0 at halftime, then watched Percy Harvin return the second-half kickoff for a TD. "Youve got to play well in this game to win it," said Broncos boss John Elway, who lost Super Bowls by scores of 39-20, 42-10 and 55-10 during his Hall of Fame playing career before winning his last two. Elway returned to rescue his beloved Broncos in 2011 after the franchise foundered and his biggest coup was luring Manning to Denver. Over his two seasons in Colorado, Manning engineered the greatest comeback in NFL history: recovering from neck fusion surgery that weakened his throwing arm to win his fifth MVP award this season when he set records by throwing for 55 TDs and 5,447 yards. But he couldnt match that with the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history after falling behind 36-0. "I will tell you this: its hard to get things turned around against a great defence like that," Elway said. "They are a great defence. So, thats why you cant afford to lose the momentum because to try to flip it on a great defence is always hard." This was easily Mannings worst day since trading the blue and white horseshoe of the Indianapolis Colts for the orange-mane mustang of Denver. He was sacked for the first time in the playoffs, threw two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, lost a fumble and turned it over on downs. The bumbling Broncos finally found the end zone when Thomas made a leaping, twisting grab of Mannings 14-yard pass -- his 100th TD toss for Denver. But he needed a lot more of those to keep up with the efficient Russell Wilson, who didnt commit any turnovers and kept plays alive with his legs and pinpoint passes. "They outplayed us in every facet," tight end Jacob Tamme said. Thomas caught 13 passes for 118 yards but he also had a fumble as Denver was driving in the third quarter. Denver was missing five defensive starters who are on IR that might have made this a fairer fight -- Von Miller, Rahim Moore, Kevin Vickerson, Derek Wolfe and Chris Harris Jr. "We just didnt play like were capable of," Elway said. "Its disappointing. But we had a great year. And hopefully well learn from this. But it started tough and we just couldnt seem to get it going. "Its one of those nights. We had a tremendous year and well hopefully learn from this and were going to go at it again next year." Terrance Knighton, who helped hold Marshawn Lynch to 2.6 yards a carry, was already looking forward to that. "Itll be the 2014 season before you know it," he said. "Itll sting for a little bit tonight and maybe for a few more days but well have to bounce back." WASHINGTON -- Thanks to their pitching, the San Diego Padres have hovered around the .500 mark despite having the second-lowest batting average in the National League. On Friday night, their hurlers didnt give them a chance. Three San Diego pitchers surrendered 17 hits as the Washington Nationals clubbed the Padres 11-1. "I think tonight was a function of three (young) pitchers not commanding their fastball," manager Bud Black said. "Youve got to command your fastball in this league and if you dont, major league hitters are going to have you pay." San Diegos Robbie Erlin (1-3) was the primary victim, allowing eight runs and 13 hits over 5 1-3 innings. He struck out three and walked two. "Everything was elevated and I worked behind most of the night," Erlin said, "so put those two together, kind of put me in some holes and let runners on and they got a few big hits." Rookies Kevin Quackenbush, in his major league debut, and Donn Roach allowed three runs in 2 2-3 innings of relief. Everth Cabrera had three hits for the Padres. Bryce Harper drove in a career-high four runs before leaving the game with a jammed thumb, and Stephen Strasburg pitched seven scoreless innings for the Nationals. Harper drove in a run with an infield single in the first and had a bases-loaded triple in the third. Following his headfirst dive into third base on the triple, Harper flexed his left wrist. "I slid into the bag and I caught it a little bit," he said of his thumb. "Went into the dugout, swung a couple in the cage, felt fine. Went out to the outfield, it swelled up a little bit. So (up 6-0) I thought we were in a good spot, and (manager) Matt (Williams) did too, so I got in and got some treatment on it." He was replaced in left field by Nate McLouth to start the fifth inning. Williams said X-rays were negative and Harper would be re-evaluated Saturday. Strasburg (2-2) allowed seven hits and walked two, but struck out 11. He lowered his ERA from 5.33 to 4.24. One night after Washington went 0 for 16 with runners in scoring position in a 4-3 12-inning loss, the Nationals bounced back by going 7 for 17, including 5 for 7 over the first three innings as they built a 6-0 lead. Harper, who came in with five RBIs in his first 21 games, nearly doubled that. With runners on first and second and two outs in the first, Ian Desmond lined Erlins first pitch to right-centre for a double, scoring Anthony Rendon. Harper followed with an infield single up the middle to make it 2-0. In the third, with one out and the bases loaded, Harper drilled a 3-2 pitch off the wall in right. Three runners scored and Harper, under increased scrutiny since his benching last Saturday for not running out a grounder to the pitcher, was looking triple all the way and slid in ahead of the relay. He scored on a single by Jose Lobaton to make it 6-0. In two career starts against Washington, Erlin has allowed 17 runs in 9 1-3 innings. Pitching against his hometown team, Strasburg allowed at least one baserunner in six of his seven innings, but the Padres couldnt get a timely hit. With the bases loaded and two outs in the third, Yonder Alonso flied to left. In the fourth, the Padres had first and second with one out, but Xavier Nady struck out and, on the pitch, Lobaton caught Nick Hundley roaming too far off first. NOTES: The start of the game was delayed 57 minutes by rain. ... The Padres placed 3B Chase Headley (right calf strain) on the 15-day disabled list and optioned INF/OF Tommy Medica to Triple-A El Paso. They promoted INF Jace Peterson from Double-A San Antonio and Quackenbush from their top minor league team. Peterson made his major league debut as well and collected his first hit, a single off Strasburg in the seventh. ... Derrick White Jersey .com) - Manu Ginobili capped off a 26-point night with a go-ahead layup with 24 seconds left in overtime, with the basket giving the San Antonio Spurs a much-needed 95-93 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans. First up is a $105-million facelift to a bare-bones stadium built on a $62.5-million shoestring as part of the deal to bring the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup and Major League Soccer to Canada. "It became really obvious to us that we were taking a backdoor in Major League Soccer relative to our facilities, even in a seven-year-old building," Bob Hunter, chief facilities and live entertainment officer at Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, said after the ceremonial groundbreaking Tuesday. "This is going to take us back to the top of the MLS stadium category," he added. Phase 1, to be completed by May 2015, will see the stadium capacity raised to 30,000 with 8,500 new seats plus additional washrooms and concessions, in the East stand. A larger high-definition video board will replace the existing screen at the north end while new suites and premium areas will help add to the MLSE coffers. MLSE can add another 10,000 temporary seats, which it hopes will be enough to bring a Winter Classic to Toronto. The Phase 1 deadline is to ensure a larger BMO Field is in place for the Pan American Games next summer, with rugby sevens expected to be a showcase event at the lakefront venue. Phase 2, slated to start in September 2015 and end May 2016, will see the addition of a canopy covering all seats with the exception of the North stand, as well as a new sound and lighting system. MLSE, which owns the MLS team and runs the city-owned stadium, is putting in $95 million to help pay for the first two phases. The city is kicking in $10 million, which MLSE will repay with interest over 20 years. Phase 3 is where the Argos come in, with a plan to reconfigure the field to accommodate CFL football. Cost of all three phases is going to be $125 million, with MLSE looking for the provincial and federal governmennts to contribute $10 million apiece.dddddddddddd That has yet to happen, so Phase 3 is on hold. There is a time concern. The Argos have a lease at Rogers Centre through 2017. But that deal cant be renewed, meaning they must find a new home for the 18 campaign. The city wants the Argos to join Toronto FC at BMO Field. But it has gone along with MLSEs wish that $20 million come from elsewhere. Hunter says if everything falls into place, the football phase could be accelerated. "Summer of 16 at best. And could be as late as summer of 17." But it could come down further down the line in terms of construction, as needed. Councillor Mark Grimes, chair of the Exhibition Place board of governors, is doing his best to bang the BMO Field drum for the CFL team which used to play at the now demolished Exhibition Stadium. "Im a huge Argo fan and a huge CFL fan. I think its very important we get them back home here where they belong," he said. MLSE also wants it to happen, Hunter said. "Weve always hoped that the CFL comes," he said. "Its a natural situation, a great solution for them." Hunter has plenty of deadline pressure already. "Its going to be very tight," he said. "As you can see, we started only last week. Theyre busy. We have a lot of work to do before May but were totally confident that well be there." Another deadline is May 9, 2015, when Toronto FC wants to play its first home game of the 2015 season. Toronto FC players Steven Caldwell and Michael Bradley liked what they saw from the artists renditions. "Very exciting times ahead," said Caldwell, the TFC captain. "We all cant wait for it to be done," added Bradley, who did his part in the groundbreaking ceremony by manning a bulldozer in the work m. HAMBURG, N.Y. - Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Marcell Dareus will still try to resolve charges stemming from an alleged street-racing accident after failing to accept a plea deal on Tuesday. Dareus lawyer Michael Caffery turned down the prosecutions offer to plead guilty to reckless driving during a brief appearance in Hamburg Town court. Caffery instead said he intends to obtain more details on the prosecutions evidence in a bid to reach a resolution before a potential trial. Upon listening to the two sides, Judge Gerald Gorman put the case off until Sept. 9, when Dareus is next scheduled to appear in court. The Bills open the season two days earlier in Chicago. Erie County District Attorney Frank Sedita told The Associated Press that the plea deal remains on the table. Dareus was charged with misdemeanour reckless endangerment after crashing his 2012 Jaguar into a tree on May 30. The accident occurred near a busy suburban Buffalo intersection and after Dareus was alleged to be racing Bills linebacker Jerry Hughes. The 24-year-old Dareus also was ticketed for numerous traffic violations, including leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving and taking part in an illegal race. Sedita said he doesnt expect to file criminal charges against Hughes, who has already met with police and prosecutors. Dareus was dressed in a grey suit after he travelled from Alabama to be in court on Tuesday. The Bills 2011 first-round draft pick arrived and left the courthouse without commenting. The accident happened about a month after Dareus was arrested in Alabama and charged with possession of synthetic marijuana and drug paraphernalia. His lawyer has said there are plea discussions in that case. The off-field troubles could lead to the NFL taking disciplinary action against Dareus, including a suspension. The Bills are off until July 18, when players are scheduled to report for the start of training camp in suburban Rochester. ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Ryan Grant Colts Jersey . Cory Conacher scored at 2:48 of overtime, Jason Spezza completed a natural hat trick to erase a two-goal deficit and the Senators ended a four-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday night. "We came into this game with a little different attitude and it showed in most parts of the game," Conacher said. "Obviously, we took five to 10 minutes off and they got a couple of goals, but for the most part I think that we showed we can be a really good team." Ottawa had gone through a rough opening stretch of the season, following a win over Buffalo with a 0-2-2 run heading into Tuesdays game. The players talked after their morning skate about trying to end the road trip on a positive note and did just that, rallying from a 2-0 deficit behind Spezzas fifth career hat trick. Even after Phoenix tied it late in regulation, the Senators didnt let down, pulling out the two points on Conachers one-timer on a pass from Marc Methot in the extra period. Milan Michalek added a pair of assists for Ottawa, which will open its home season Thursday against New Jersey after earning six of a possible 12 points on the road trip. "Were excited to get home, excited to play our home opener," Spezza said. "Weve played six games now and we havent played at home. Were excited to play in front of our fans, see our families, play in our own arena." Coming off a five-game road trip, the Coyotes knew they had a tough night ahead of them, expecting to be tired and the Senators to play angry. Phoenix couldnt match Ottawas intensity early, but managed to keep it scoreless after an ugly first period and went up 2-0 early in the second on quick goals by Rob Klinkhammer and Radim Vrbata. The Coyotes responded after Spezzas hat trick, tying it on Mike Ribeiros first goal with the team, but couldnt finish it off in overtime to end a three-game winning streak. "What you try to do in a game like that, everyone in your group is contributing a little bit," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. "Maybe not to their normal standard, but everybodys got to contribute a little bit..ddddddddddddThe problem tonight was probably half a dozen guys didnt contribute much at all and thats where you come up a little bit short." The Senators were coming off a pair of ugly losses, allowing a combined 106 shots against San Jose and Anaheim. Goalie Craig Anderson didnt last long in the loss to the Ducks, pulled after giving up two goals on nine shots in the first four minutes. Ottawa was much better in its own end early against the Coyotes, allowing one shot in the first 14 minutes while outshooting Phoenix 12-4 in the first period. "Coming off a road trip, you always want to have a good start at home, but we were lucky to come away from that 0-0," Coyotes defenceman Michael Stone said. The Coyotes changed things in a hurry at the start of the second period. Phoenix created a couple of quick scoring chances and Klinkhammer turned one into his third goal of the season, punching in a rebound less than 90 seconds into the period. Vrbata followed with his fourth goal 1:12 later, wristing a shot from the left circle that Anderson had trouble seeing through traffic. The Senators managed to gather themselves after the flurry. Ottawa pulled within 2-1 when Spezza punched in his second goal of the season after a shot by Patrick Wiercioch slid under Smith and bounced between the goalies skates. Spezza had another easy chance on his second goal of the game early in the third period, shooting to an empty net after Smith went out of his crease to play the puck, but had to let it go after it crossed out of the trapezoid in the corner. Spezza completed the natural hat trick a few minutes later on a power play, ripping a slap shot from the right circle past Smiths stick side. The Coyotes picked up the pressure late and tied it on Ribeiros redirect, but Conacher ended it in overtime, sending the Senators home happy. "Now were heading home and hopefully we can put together some games," Spezza said. "Getting those two points gives us a lot of confidence." Notes: Milan Michalek went up 18-17-1 in his head-to-head matchup with older brother Zbynek, Phoenix defenceman, with the Senators win. ... MONACO -- French league club Monaco appointed Portuguese coach Leonardo Jardim on a two-year deal to replace Claudio Ranieri. Monaco announced the news on its website Friday. Jardim led Sporting to a runner-up finish in the Portuguese league this season. Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev says Jardim "is part of this new generation of coaches who bring a new dynamic. Hes ambitious as we are. He fits exactly the profile we were looking for." Ranieri helped Monaco gain promotion last year and finish second in the French league this season. But the club dismissed the Italian coach because of a season with no silverware. PETERSBURG, Fla.SOCHI, Russia – Even before the Olympic tournament began, before the under-looked and under-appreciated Fins would stun the entire nation of Russia, Olli Jokinen prescribed the formula that would get it done. “I think we have the best goaltending out of all the other countries,” Jokinen said. “We play a good team game. Plus, we feel that at the end of the day it doesnt matter who puts the Finnish jersey on the team is going to play the same game anyways. For us its not so much about the names on the back, its about the good, solid team game and good goaltending.” That was what it took to bring down Alex Ovechkin, Evgeni Malkin and the home country at Bolshoy Ice Dome on Wednesday night: spectacular goaltending from Tuukka Rask, a few timely goals and continued adherence to a team game, despite injury losses that seemed too burdensome to overcome. Ever the underdog, Finland has altered the face of these Games in Russia and reminded the hockey world, yet again, why only one country has medaled in three of the four Olympics involving NHL players. “You know that nobody ever believed that we could win, but it doesnt matter,” said captain Teemu Selanne, who had a goal and an assist in the 3-1 upset over Russia. “The experts are wrong many times. We have to believe in our team.” There was no Ovechkin on this team, no Malkin, not even the injured and more recognizable likes of Mikko and Saku Koivu, Valtteri Filppula, or even Aleksander Barkov, the second overall pick in last summers NHL draft. For star power, it came down to Rask, who was terrific with 37 saves, and Selanne, playing in his final Olympics at age 43. “Weve got good team spirit and our style to play,” said Leo Komarov, who played in the NHL with the Maple Leafs last season. The Finns, who won bronze in 1998 and 2010 and silver in 2006, were a determined and youthful bunch on this night, led, however, by the aging Selanne, the unsolvable Rask and 21-year-old Mikael Granlund, who set up Selannes go-ahead goal and eventual game-winner before scoring the third and finall marker himself.dddddddddddd. “I think this is a great business card for Granlund to show how good he can be,” Selanne said of Granlund, who has 28 points in his second season with the Minnesota Wild. In upsetting the Russians and holding Ovechkin and Malkin off the score-board entirely – the pair combined for two goals all tournament – Finland gets an opportunity to play in Fridays semi-final against Sweden with another medal chance close at hand. Mindful of a rest advantage – Russia was playing for the fourth time in five days – Selanne believes a turning point for his country came in their final preliminary round match against Canada during which they lost 2-1 in overtime, hanging around despite an overwhelming talent disparity. “My young teammates, when they realized that they can compete against the best players in the world it felt great,” said Selanne, who played in his first Olympics in 1992. “I dont know how many people saw that, [but] I saw it very [closely]. I was very proud of those guys. I think thats the carryover from that game. Its a good feeling when you realize that you can compete against the best.” Yet again it was a sum of parts defeating what was ultimately an incredibly talented and yet flawed Russian squad, one that buckled under the strain of a countrys worth of pressure. They fell in the quarterfinals for the second straight Olympics. “It sucks,” said Ovechkin, who had just a single goal all tournament, held to three shots by Finland and singled out by his head coach afterward. Rask was there all night to turn aside whatever Ovechkin and the Russians could muster. The 26-year-old got stronger as the game wore on, stopping all 27 shots in the final 40 minutes, including one on Alexander Radulov in the waning moments of victory. “Tuukka?” said Komarov with a grin. “Hes okay.” And ultimately it was Rask, who summed up the under-looked and under-appreciated Finns. “Even though nobody ever picks us to win medals,” he said, “we always seem to find a way to get there and win one.” Wholesale NFL T-shirts Cheap Jerseys Free Shipping NFL Jerseys Wholesale China NFL Gear Wholesale NFL Camo Jerseys Cheap NFL Hoodies Camo China NFL Jerseys ' ' '

TORONTO -- Almost three weeks after its last league outing, Toronto FC returns to action Friday night against the New York Red Bulls as the MLS season resumes with a vengeance following a World Cup break. After just two league games in June, Toronto (6-4-1) will go on to play seven in July plus a friendly against Tottenham. Five of those contests are against Eastern Conference opposition, meaning valuable points in the playoff race are on the line. Manager Ryan Nelsen gave his players eight days off following the 1-0 win over visiting San Jose on June 7. They have been training ever since, albeit with sessions pushed forward a little bit to allow players to watch the World Cup in the afternoon. There are different allegiances, although the team is rooting for both Brazil and the U.S. given the presence of TFC goalie Julio Cesar and midfielder Michael Bradley at the tournament. Canadian international Jonathan Osorio is pulling for Colombia, where his parents came from. The U.S.-Ghana game pitted the 12 Americans on the Toronto roster against Ghana-born forward Dominic Oduro. Massage therapist and acupuncturist Marcelo Casal is cheering for Uruguay. The public relations department is still mourning the exit of Italy. While his players enjoyed time off, albeit with a prescribed gym regimen, Nelsen and his coaches were at work planning training sessions. "We might have worked around a nice glass of red," said Nelsen, whose business holdings include a winery back home in New Zealand. Nelsen is expecting a hard contest Friday against the Red Bulls (4-5-6) who are one point behind fourth-place Toronto in the East despite having played four more games. Toronto defeated New York 2-0 when they met in May at BMO Field, with Jermain Defoe scoring early and Luke Moore scoring late. "I think that game was a big game for us," said Nelsen. "We had a few guys out (injured) and wed just come back from the West Coast after 120 minutes (in an Amway Canadian Championship game in Vancouver) and it was a really, really good performance. "New York will have a lot of motivation, in all honesty, to put one back on us. Its at their home field. Ive got a real sense that everybodys desperate to play a game after the break. "Its nice to have a break but everybody wants to get back on the field. I can sense this games going to be a really good one, a good tough one. Im looking forward to it." The host Red Bulls will also be well rested. Star striker Thierry Henry, fresh from a stint as a BBC World Cup analyst, and Colombian defender Jamison Olave have not played since May 27 at Sporting Kansas City, skipping artificial turf games June 8 in New England and June 14 against the New York Cosmos (in U.S. Open Cup play). The Red Bulls Australian star Tim Cahill is slated to be back from the World Cup and could make an appearance Friday night. Cahill did not see action in the Socceroos 3-0 loss to Spain on Monday but scored two goals earlier at the tournament including a highlight-reel volley against the Dutch. "Were expecting them to play," Nelsen said of Cahill and Henry. While hes a Kiwi, Nelsen was raving about Cahills strike against the Dutch while saying it had not got the publicity it deserved. "For me, if a Brazilian did that, or an Argentinian, or a big-country-type player did that, theyd be raving about that for years to come. ... It was of such quality that I didnt think they gave him the credit he really deserved for an over-the-shoulder left-foot volley." "But thats Timmy," he added. "Timmys been scoring those type of goals his whole career. Thats why New York is so lucky to have him." Toronto has two injury concerns in winger Daniel Lovitz (concussion) and Brazilian striker Gilberto (hip flexor). Ian Thomas Panthers Jersey . "Its interesting, and theres definitely an element of fun to it," Putnam said. "We dont know from game to game who is going to have that ninth if its a save opportunity." The White Sox have had no steady closer after Nate Jones and Matt Lindstrom were injured, and Ronald Belisario struggled in the role. They have been closing games by committee, and four relievers combined to throw three scoreless innings Saturday. White Sox manager Robin Ventura turned to Putnam to record the final out after Jake Petricka allowed a walk and infield hit in the ninth. "Unfortunately, I dont have a guy that youre just going to leave out there, saying thats your closer," Ventura said. "I like Puts swing-and-missability with some lefties, and thats the reason." Tyler Flowers had three hits and drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth for the White Sox, who have won two straight against the Astros to open the second half. George Springer hit his 20th home run, a solo shot, and Jose Altuve had a two-run double for the Astros. Flowers RBI double snapped a 3-all tie after Alejandro De Aza tripled. Flowers, who also drove in the go-ahead run with a double in the seventh of Fridays 3-2 victory, had his first three-hit game since April 24. "I dont know where he went over the break, but you can come back with renewed energy," Ventura said. "Catchings a tough thing to do. I think you dont find too many catchers that are going to hit all year long. Its a tough position, and people that do it are special. With him getting some rest, maybe it kind of gets him going in the right direction." Flowers is 6 for 9 in his last three games after going 10 for 112 in his previous 34.dddddddddddd "I dont know if Im quite locked in yet," Flowers said. "Its good to put some quality at-bats together." White Sox starter Hector Noesi (4-7) gave up three runs in six innings and has lowered his ERA from 11.74 to 5.21 since joining the rotation. "Im getting prepared for the second half to be tough," Noesi said. "So, Im more aggressive when I go to the mound." Dallas Keuchel (9-6) allowed four runs and 12 hits in five innings. He was 7-2 with a 3.13 ERA in his previous 10 road starts. "When you look at the amount of trouble he was in, to minimize it to four runs -- and only three were earned -- he did a nice job of battling," Astros manager Bo Porter said. The White Sox went ahead 1-0 in the second after three singles and an error. Conor Gillaspie extended the lead to 2-0 with an RBI single in the third. Flowers was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in another run. Springers homer cut it to 3-1 in the fourth. He is one home run shy of tying Lance Berkmans club rookie home run record, set in 2000. Altuves double tied it at 3 in the fifth. The game featured three challenged calls and replay reviews totalling 5 minutes, 39 seconds. All were overturned. In the third, Gordon Beckham appeared to be hit by a pitch, loading the bases. The Astros challenged the call, and review confirmed Beckham was not hit. He returned to the plate and struck out. In the fourth, the White Soxs Alexei Ramirez was called out on a grounder to third, but replay confirmed he was safe at first. Later in the inning, Jose Abreu was called safe at second on a fielders choice. The Astros challenged the call, and Abreu was ruled out. NOTES: The White Sox optioned INF Carlos Sanchez to Triple-A Charlotte and will make a corresponding move on Sunday. .Abreu, who was leading the majors with 29 homers, is expected to play far more games than he did in Cuba, where he said teams play 96 games. He said he doesnt expect fatigue to be an issue. Ventura noted Abreu can sometimes DH to allow for rest. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Omar Infante walked past the visiting clubhouse at Kauffman Stadium, where he dressed so many times as a member of the Detroit Tigers, and slipped on a crisp, new Kansas City Royals jersey. It was the latest sign of that the Royals intend to compete for the AL Central this season. The Royals introduced their new second baseman Tuesday, one day after announcing they had agreed to a $30.25 million, four-year contract that includes a club option for 2018. "I really got to see this team up close and I was very impressed by what they did last year," Infante said, "and I think theyre close to taking the next step." Infante will make $5 million next season, $7.5 million in 2015, $7.75 million in 2016 and $8 million in 2017. His option is $10 million with a $2 million buyout, and if Infante wins Silver Slugger or is picked for the All-Star game, his salary increases by $250,000 for each remaining season. Infante, who turns 32 next week, fills perhaps the most glaring hole that remained in the Royals lineup. Kansas City used six different options at second base last season, and none did enough to make the club feel comfortable about them in what could be a pivotal season for the franchise. The Royals are coming off an 86-76 season, their best record since 1989, and were in contention until the final week. But with star pitcher James Shields entering the final year of his contract, the window to break through to the playoffs for the first time since 1985 may be closing soon. Thats why the Royals have been aggressive this off-season. Theyve already sign left-hander Jason Vargas to a $32 million, four-year deal to make up for the likely loss of right-hander Ervin Santana in free agency, and traded reliever Will Smith to the Milwaukee Brewers for outfielder Norichika Aoki. Royals general manager Dayton Moore said following the season that three most pressing needs were to add a starting pitcher, upgrade in the outfield and solidify the second base position. Infante appears to be the final major item on the off-season shopping list. "We like our club going forward," Moore said Tuesday. "Weve made a lot of improvements, but we fully expect and understand that were going to have to massage our roster and keep making adjustments throughout the year, and hopefully stay injury free." Infante has had some injury troubles in the past, including an ankle injury that he picked up during a collision at second base that limited him to 118 games last season. But he still hit .318 with 10 homers and 51 RBIs, far better production than Kansas City got from its second basemen. Emilio Bonifacio, Jamey Carroll, Chris Getz, Johnny Giavotella, Elliot Johnson and Miguel Tejada combined to hit just .243 with four home runs last season. Moore said earlier this off-season that he expected payroll to be about the same as it was in 2013, which ended at $86,614,795. But the signing of Infante combined with expected raises for arbitration-eligible players means the payroll for next season will shoot past $90 million, a franchise record. Thats led to speculation that the Royals may have to trim salary, and rumours that designated hitter Billy Butler -- who is owed $8.5 million next season with a club option for 2015 -- may become available for a trade. Moore said such rumours amounted to "hot stove rhetoric." "Its no different than you hear other players throughout the league that potentially are going to be moved," Moore said. "Billys a terrific hitter, and hes going to hit. Thats what Billy does." As for the payroll, Moore said that "were not under any directive to cut," and that team owner David Glass has been supportive and flexible when it comes to signing players such as Infante. "We all understand this makes really good sense, this type of deal," Moore said, "and putting Omar on this team, Mr. Glass has always been supportive." Infante also received interest from the New York Yankees, who are searching for a replacement for Robinson Cano. But they were lukewarm about going beyond three years, allowing Kansas City to seal the deal by offering a fourth year to a player who will be 35 by the end of the contract. "We think he can play," Moore said. "The players that play in the middle of the diamond for a long time, they all have some commonalities. Theyre very smart, theyre hard workers, good teammates, they know how to play, and thats why those guys have long careers." Charlottesville, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Anderson and Anthony Gill scored 36 points between them without missing a shot as No. 8 Virginia steamrolled Tennessee State 79-36 on Tuesday. Anderson paced Virginia with 20 points on 7-of-7 from the floor, including five 3s, while Gill chipped in with 16 points and nine boards on 6-for-6. The Cavaliers (5-0) shot 51.7 percent as a team. Mike Tobey posted the first double-double of his career with 13 points and a personal-best 16 rebounds. Anderson hit two 3-pointers during Virginias 13-2 start. UVAs defense, which has been its calling card under head coach Tony Bennett, locked down and held the Tigers to eight points over the first 10-plus minutes of the game. Gill and Anderson had 27 points on 10 shots between them in the first half, and the Cavaliers owned a 42-17 lead after 20 minutes. Anderson scored the first eight points of the second half and Virginia opened the stanza on a 20-0 run before coasting to the finish line. Xavier Richards and Marcus Roper both scored 10 points to lead Tennessee State (2-3). Game Notes Virginia is 5-0 for the first time since 2007-08 ... DUBLIN, Ireland -- Penn State won a thrilling season opener with a 36-yard field goal as time expired to defeat the University of Central Florida 26-24 in front of a raucous 55,000-strong crowd in Ireland. Behind second-half replacement quarterback Justin Holman, the Knights appeared to have scored their own unlikely come-from-behind victory when Holmans 6-yard touchdown run with 1:13 left put UCF up 24-23. But Christian Hackenberg -- capping a 32-for-47, 454-yard performance -- coolly directed a seven-play drive to set up Sam Fickens fourth successful field goal as Penn State players stormed the field in joy. Hackenberg ran 8 yards for a first down on a 4th-down play in Penn States own half of the field during the final drive. Saturdays win was the first for new Penn State coach James Franklin, who declared his pride in a team that wasnt rattled by the Knights go-ahead TD. "There was only a minute or so left in the game, and I looked across the sideline and there wasnt doubt in anybodys eye. Everybody believed. They believed in Hack. They believed in Ficken," said Franklin, who bear-hugged and lifted up his kicker moments after victory. Penn State players received the Dan Rooney Trophy, a football made of ancient Irish bog wood that was specially commissioned for the game. Cannons blasted blue-and-white streamers and confetti into the air at Dublins Croke Park, a stadium that normally hosts Gaelic football matches, not American football games. Both teams agreed to play a game in Dublin for their own reasons. Penn State was seeking an overseas trip and a bowl-like experience for a squad that is barred by NCAA sanctions from post-season contention until 2016, while UCF -- just months before its breakthrough 12-1 season and Top 10 finish in national rankings -- was seeking an international showcase. Hackenberg spoiled a stunning performance by Holman, who came on for the second drive of the second half after coach George OLeary benched the ineffective Pete DiNovo. The redshirt freshman had been 3 of 8 for just 18 yards and gave up a drive-killing sack on his final play. OLeary praised both Holman and Hackenberg, describing the Penn State QB as a player that "everybody in the country would like to have." He expressed bewilderment at DiNovos poor play. "I said at halftime that hes not moving the chains, I didnt like the way he was handling things out there. He just seemed to be all over the place," OLeary said of DiNovo. He said the UCF receivers were consistently open in both halves, but DiNovo too often misfired or hesitated. "Justin, give him credit," he said of the replacement quarterback. "He went out there and made the throws. He was the spark plug in the second half offensively." Penn State ended the first half up 10-3, but should have been ahead by mmore as UCF struggled to move the ball at all.dddddddddddd Both teams looked jet-lagged in what was the first overseas game in either schools history. The Nittany Lions opening drive was extended by a roughing-the-kicker penalty, then Hackenberg dropped a 44-yard pass between two defenders to receiver DaeSean Hamilton, who set a Penn State receiving record for freshmen with 11 catches for 165 yards. Zach Zwinak finally punched the ball in from the 1-yard line on his third attempt to put Penn State up 7-0. A 68-yard kickoff return by Jordan Akins gave UCF the ball on Penn States 23, but OLeary gambled and lost with a 4th down decision to go for it on PSUs 1-yard line. DiNovos rollout straight into a pass rush ended with a throwaway. UCF cornerback Jacoby Glenn made a diving interception on Hackenbergs next possession, but the Knights could manage only a 36-yard Shawn Moffitt field goal to make the score 10-3. The game tempo accelerated as soon as Holman entered the game. He ran for two touchdowns, the first a one-yard plunge to pull UCF within 13-10 with 2:39 left in the third quarter. And he threw for a third, a 10-yard bullet to Josh Reese with 11:31 left that narrowed Penn States lead to 20-17. Between those two UCF scores, Hattenberg pulled off the longest play of the game. On 3rd and 17 deep in his own half, he lobbed a bomb to Geno Lewis, who had gotten behind three defenders and ran untouched for a 79-yard TD. The start of the fourth quarter featured a rat-a-tat three turnovers in 52 seconds. Hackenberg, rolling right and under pressure from defensive tackle Demetris Anderson, saw his pass picked off on the UCF 39-yard line by cornerback Jordan Ozerities. On the very next play Holman suffered his only miscue, failing to keep hold of the ball during a play-action move. Defensive tackle Anthony Zettel recovered. Two plays later, Chris Godwin took a bubble-screen pass and got hit hard by two defenders, particularly Glenn, whose low-shoulder tackle popped the ball loose again. Strong safety Clayton Geathers recovered. UCFs defence forced Penn State to settle for a third field goal with 3:30 left to make it 23-17. Then Holman, who finished 9 of 14 for 204 yards, marched his team down the field -- straight into a 4th down-and-10 crisis on the Penn State 37. As the heavily pro-Penn State crowd roared, Holman fired a long ball down the left sideline that looked overthrown. But Reese leaped backward and caught the ball with both hands as he fell on his back at the 6. Holman scored on the ground the next play, leaving too much time on the clock for Hackenberg. "Hes what a college quarterback should look like," OLeary said of Hackenberg. "He delivered the ball on time and with great efficiency. We shouldve had our hands on him more, but he was the difference in the game." The Maple Leafs are the only NHL team on Forbess list of the 50 most valuable franchises in sports, checking in at No. 26. According to Forbes, the Leafs are worth US$1.15 billion and have been the most valuable NHL team since 2005 despite making just one playoff appearance in that time. Commissioner Adam Silver forced Donald Sterling to give up ownership of the team following racist remarks that surfaced this past spring. In his annual state of the league address before Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said the Clippers sale represented a unique situation. "That may be a function of the uniqueness of the L.A. market," Bettman said in June. "It may be a function of the uniqueness of the people who live in L.A. who wanted to own the franchise. SALVADOR, Brazil -- Jozy Altidore is available to play for the United States in Tuesdays World Cup second-round game against Belgium, but it does not appear the forward is ready to return to the starting lineup. Altidore strained his left hamstring in the Americans opener against Ghana on June 16 and didnt play in their next two games. "We dont know how much because we need to see how hes going, but hes available," U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said Monday. "How many minutes? We will see that during the game." Altidore had been working out on his own, jogging around the field at the Americans training camp at Sao Paulo Futebol Clube. Klinsmann said he has to determine "how much work is in his legs." Aron Johannsson replaced Altidore at forward for the remainder of the game against Ghana. But Klinsmann switched from a 4-4-2 formation to a 4-5-1 against Portugal and Germany with a fifth midfielder instead of a second forward. We feel that we like the team we have, but we certainly see the room for improvement. He wouldnt comment on negotiations for Desmond, Zimmermann or Fister.Weve got a lot of options, Rizzo said. Roy Halladay Jersey .com) - Eric Fehrs goal 42 seconds into overtime lifted the Washington Capitals to a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Columbus, halting the Blue Jackets seven-game win streak. This is going to be a good team. I realize I tend to say that about almost every team in my CFL previews this year, but with Montreal it is easy to express analytical optimism for many reasons. First is quarterback Troy Smith. There is nothing really physically outstanding about Smith; he is 60, 224 pounds with a good arm and good mobility. I sum him up as thick and quick. But there is something about him, a genuine confidence expressed through experience in football at a high level. An articulation and intelligence that you "pick up on" when he is in front of a camera talking about himself and the league. And a unique level of humility that says in order to perform, I have to learn; not the other way around. I have always looked at humility as a strength and maturity; arrogance as a weakness and insecurity. When you consider the short amount of preparation time Smith experienced last year, his solid on field performance in yes, limited games, was very impressive. You have to feel good that as the teams starter from the outset, improvement is inevitable. I know of the other Alouettes QBs, but I would be immensely surprised if, outside of injury, Smith is not the No. 1 quarterback wearing No. 1. And with Anthony Calvillo retired, I am sure Smith looks at this training camp as a career opportunity, not a wait-and-see situation. On the defensive side of the ball, the Alouettes have an exceptional unit with just one unknown: who will play middle linebacker now that Shea Emry is an Argonaut? This issue is more a ratio adjustment problem than a personnel problem. It would be great if you could replace a Canadian with another good Canadian but if not, you will have a market of linebackers ready throughout the United States. The two positions of numeric wealth in NCAA football are running back and linebacker; simply said there are a lot of them. Last year Montreal was first in some significant defensive categories: fewest yards allowed at 314 per game, fewest rushing yards allowed at 88 per game; fewest 2nd down conversions allowed, most two and outs forced, most quarterback sacks with 59, and a key one, most takeaways with 56. All they need is to find or develop a new middle llinebacker.ddddddddddddThats a manageable situation. On offence, Brandon Whitaker will be back and with Jamel Richardson and SJ Green it is hard to argue that the two best slot receivers are anywhere but Montreal. The Chad Johnson experiment will be an interesting one. Hes closer to 40 than 30 but the bottom line is can he still move like he is 20? Answers will be given early but if he is competing for a roster spot with someone younger and equal in talent, the younger guy will get it. The single biggest mediating factor in athletic performance is age. You know it is coming but you cant stop it, you can only slow it down. Special teams will improve with Larry Taylor and Duron Carter as returners, but also a rededication to blocking effectively for the returners as a priority. And finally there is Tom Higgins, the new Alouettes head coach. More than a few years removed from coaching, Higgins is about as much a polar opposite from the previous full-time head coach as you can get. And that is a good thing. Higgins is pragmatic and calculated; hes an administrator and no one knows the rules better. Hes been named CFL coach of the year and is a Grey Cup-winning coach. He is not the next youthful flash of success, quite the opposite. This decision comes from the experience of decades being the front man of the organization. This one is logical and safe compared to last years decision, which was risky and a novelty. It does not happen very often but every now and then games are determined by experience or inexperience with CFL rules. This year, thats an advantage with Higgins in Montreal. In the East, Toronto has to keep Ricky Ray healthy for 18 games because assuming the next Zack Collaros is on the roster is unrealistic. Hamilton has to continue to improve and may be the team to beat early. Ottawa is brand new, if they make the playoffs it will be a successful season. So where does that leave Montreal? With a new coach, new quarterback, new receivers, and maybe more adversity than any CFL team last year, they still finished 8-10, only three games out from first place. Another 8-10 finish this year is very unlikely; expect Montreal to surprise come November in BC.
