New Brunswick, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Myles Mack had 21 points, Kadeem Jack scored 20 and Rutgers shocked No. 4 Wisconsin 67-62 on Sunday. It was the first win over a top-five team in Rutgers history. The Scarlet Knights (10-7, 2-2 Big Ten) outscored the short-handed Badgers (15-2, 3-1) by a 44-27 margin in the second half for the programs first win over a ranked team in more than two years. Wisconsin played without leading scorer Frank Kaminsky because of a concussion and finished the game without point guard Traevon Jackson, who appeared to suffer an injury when he landed on Macks foot while trying to block a 3-point shot in the second half. Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, Fiorentina levelled on aggregate in the 14th minute when Joaquin Sanchez Rodriguez headed back a long ball from David Pizarro and Pasqual smashed home an angled volley. On Saturday at 3:23am et, Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ryan Gregory Malone was arrested on charges of cocaine possession and driving under the influence. Malone was pulled over by a Tampa police officer when his 2014 Chevrolet Suburban struck a curb. A search revealed 1.3 grams of cocaine in Malones right back pocket. Breathalysers recorded blood alcohol content of .112 and .116. Florida law considers a driver impaired at 0.08 so he was well over the limit. Two seasons removed from a 20 goal season, the 34 year old Malone has struggled this season with 15 points in 57 games. Malones arrest report may be viewed here. The charges laid on Malone are very serious, particularly in the case of cocaine possession. In the state of Florida, if a person is convicted of possessing less than 28 grams of cocaine, he can face up to three years in prison, two years of probation and a $5,000 fine. As well, pursuant to Florida Statute 322.055, any person convicted of possession of cocaine will have their drivers license revoked for two years. Its not unusual to see plea deals in these circumstances, which include no jail time and probation. Common defences to cocaine possession include illegal search and seizure as well as Malone saying the cocaine wasnt his. Based on the facts as reported to date, these would seem to be difficult defences to successfully rely on. The cocaine was found in his pocket on a night when he was allegedly intoxicated and driving erratically. Still, while things dont look terribly promising for Malone, we should not assume guilt. As far as the NHL goes, the Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health Program kicks in. Collectively bargained between the NHLPA and NHL, the Program is designed to addreess substance abuse among NHL players.dddddddddddd The Program contains a graduated treatment plan which is designed to discourage substance abuse among players and to provide players with time away from the pressures of the game while undergoing treatment. Players that have taken part in the Program include Brian McGrattan and Jordin Tootoo. As a first step under the Program, a player must submit to a mandatory medical and psychological evaluation. Based upon the results of this examination, recommendations are made as to the course of treatment, which may include rehabilitation. According to the Program, a player who is convicted of a criminal offence involving substance abuse will be suspended without pay while undergoing treatment. That player would be eligible for reinstatement only upon the recommendation of doctors. If the player doesnt follow through on treatment, he can be suspended without pay for 6 months while undergoing treatment, and reinstatement once again only happens if doctors recommend it. So where are we on Malone? While there are a number of scenarios that could play out here, its possible that we see Malone cut a plea deal to avoid prison time. He could also be suspended without pay by the NHL and enter a rehabilitation program, which would effectively bring his season to a close. However, in keeping with a more unlikely scenario, should doctors conclude that Malone does not need treatment and the charges are dropped, Malone could find his way back on the Lightning. The circumstances as detailed in the arrest report are certainly discouraging and do not bode well for Malone. Ultimately, at this point, the focus should be on helping a young man get better. The Montreal Canadiens look to post their best start to a season in 13 years tonight as they conclude their road trip against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Listen to all the action on TSN Radio 690 starting at 6pm et. The Habs have won the first three contests of their season-opening swing, beginning a season 3-0 for the first time since 2005. A victory over the Lightning tonight would not only give the Habs a perfect road trip, but their best start to a season since winning the first five games of the 2001-02 campaign. Montreals perfect start seemed doomed in Philadelphia on Saturday as the club trailed by three goals after two periods. However, Andrei Markov, Tomas Plekanec and Alex Galchenyuk all scored in the third frame to force overtime and P.A. Parenteau had the lone shootout tally in a 4-3 victory. After Philadelphias Matt Read shot his wrister high and over the net, Parenteau ended the fourth round and the contest by beating Ray Emery with a quick forehander inside the right post. Its the best feeling, when you go up there. The nerves are going but you just have to bear down, stay focused and thats what I did, Parenteau said of his game-deciding shot. Carey Price made 29 saves in Montreals second straight shootout victory, while Plekanec has a goal in each of Montreals first three games, with four tallies in total. If you look at the result in the first period, the result was not on our side, but I thought we played with energy. We made some mistakes, youth mistakes, noted Habs head coach Michel Therrien. But we showed a lot of character. This is a group of guys that have character and they never give up. They certainly deserved to win the way they played in the third period. The Lightning, meanwhile, were on the wrong end of a shootout decision, falling to the Ottawa Senators 3-2 on Saturday. Ben Bishop ended with 32 saves, while Brett Connolly and Victor Hedman had the goals. However, Tampa Bay was denied its first 2-0 start in five years. Ive gone against those guys a lot, said Bishop, a former member of the Senators. I know their moves. They know mine. I just guessed wrong. Hedman has scored in both of Tampa Bays games this season as he notched the overtime winner on Thursday versus Florida, while Valtteri Filppula has recorded three assists through two games. The Lightning play the third contest of a four-game homestand to begin the season and went 3-0-1 versus the Canadiens in 2013-14. Three of those games went past regulation. MIAMI - Lawyers for Aaron Hernandez say their client wont answer accusations in a federal lawsuit filed by a man who says the former star NFL tight end shot him in the face outside a Miami strip club. In the response filed Wednesday to the complaint by 30-year-old Alexander Bradley, attorneys say the former University of Florida player is invoking his Fifth Amendment right that protects people from incriminating themselves. According to court records, Bradley claims Hernandez shot him after they argued at the club in February. Bradley seeks at least $100,000 in damages. A judge in Miami denied Hernandezs request to delay the Florida proceedings until a murder charge against him in the shooting death in Massachusetts of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd is resolved. The New England Patriots released Hernandez soon after he was accused in the killing. Custom Browns Jerseys . Even so, he felt a sense of relief when he finally gave up that hit -- the only one he allowed. Sale retired 18 of 19 batters over six scoreless innings in his return from an arm injury, and the Chicago White Sox beat the New York Yankees 3-2 on Thursday night. The left-hander retired the first 17 hitters after missing more than a month because of a flexor strain in his pitching arm, and Chicago hung on after New Yorks Mark Teixeira singled in two runs against Ronald Belisario in the ninth. The White Sox couldnt have asked for more of their ace. An All-Star the past two seasons, Sale (4-0) struck out 10 and didnt even come close to allowing a runner until Zoilo Almonte -- a .167 hitter entering the game -- lined a single to centre with two out in the sixth. Sale then struck out Jacoby Ellsbury and called it a night after throwing 86 pitches. "I dont think I was ever more excited to give up a hit in my life," he said. "(Manager Robin Ventura) said the same thing, You picked a bad night to do something like that. It was all in fun, we were just joking around." Sale would have been finished after six, perfect game or not. The White Sox werent about to stretch their best pitcher after about a five-week layoff, and he insisted he would not have lobbied to stay in even if it was still going. "We have a plan," Sale said. "We have something set in stone. I pitch to win. I dont pitch for no-hitters or perfect games. I would have fully understood. I wouldnt have liked it, but do I respect it? Absolutely." Zach Putnam retired the side in the seventh, and Daniel Webb worked a perfect eighth before Belisario nearly blew it in the ninth. He gave up a one-out single to pinch hitter Ichiro Suzuki and walked Derek Jeter. After the runners moved up on a passed ball, Teixeira drove them in with a single up the middle. Belisario then struck out Alfonso Soriano looking at a 3-2 pitch up and in for his second save in three attempts. "I know the umpire, they have a tough job, its not easy being an umpire," Soriano said. "That ball is up and in. I never said anything to the umpire, but that pitch is a ball.dddddddddddd" He said he saw a replay and added: "Its a bad call, but nothing you can do." David Phelps (1-1) was a tough-luck loser for New York, allowing two runs over seven innings. He struck out eight and walked one. But one rough inning was the difference. The White Sox scored two with two out in the second on an RBI double by Alejandro De Aza and run-scoring single by Adam Eaton to go up 2-0. Chicago added to the lead in the eighth, when Gordon Beckham led off with a double high off the right-field wall against Alfredo Aceves and scored on Adam Dunns two-out single, and that was enough for the win. Sale had the Yankees lunging and looking at pitches on the corner and at the knees, doing everything but make solid contact. He struck out the side in the first and third innings along with the first two batters in the fourth -- not bad for a guy who hadnt pitched since April 17. In that game, Sale tossed one-hit ball over seven innings against Boston. He felt sore the next day after throwing 127 pitches and wound up going on the disabled list on April 22. "I dont think theres anybody he can go up against where we feel like were behind the eight-ball going in or were the underdogs," Paul Konerko said. "Theres definitely some pitchers in the league that have the same type of ring to their name and the same type of makeup and stuff. But were just fortunate weve got one of them." NOTES: Yankees manager Joe Girardi said RHP Michael Pineda, recovering from a back injury, will throw to hitters on Saturday. "Hes progressing like we want," Girardi said. "Everythings going according to plan." Pineda was suspended 10 days for having pine tar on his neck in a game at Boston and then injured a muscle in his upper back pitching a simulated game April 29, during his ban. ... Girardi also said he thinks reliever Shawn Kelley will "try to do something next week." The right-hander had a setback in his recovery from a back injury when he woke up feeling stiff Tuesday after playing catch at Yankee Stadium the previous day. MILWAUKEE - The playoff-bound Toronto Raptors found themselves trailing the hapless Milwaukee Bucks by nine points at halftime. DeMar DeRozan made sure the Raptors recovered to continue their push for post-season position. The Toronto guard scored 15 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter and the Raptors beat the Milwaukee Bucks 102-98 Saturday night to keep pace with the Chicago Bulls for the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference. "We cant look at a teams record, come in here and think this is going to be a cakewalk," DeRozan said. "That team came out here and played extremely hard. They kind of blindsided us and we had to fight the whole game." After the Raptors gave up 38 points in the paint to trail 56-47 at halftime, coach Dwane Casey lit into his team at halftime. "We let them shoot 58 per cent in the first half and I cant accept that," Casey said. "The first half, we were playing in mud. Standing up straight and it wasnt just the starters. Everybody who was in there." Toronto is tied the Bulls, who beat Washington on Saturday night, at 45-32 with five games to play. Milwaukee fell to an NBA-worst 14-63, guaranteeing the teams worst record in its 45-year history. "We want to win, but I think if we can play this competitive as a team every night, I think there are some better days to come," said Milwaukees John Henson, who had 23 points and nine rebounds in 39 minutes. Greivis Vasquez tied a season-high with 26 points for Toronto, which has won three consecutive games and six of seven. Vasquez, who averages 9.1 points, made up the scoring lost when starting point guard Kyle Lowry missed the game with a bruised left kneecap. "Coach jumped on us (at halftime) and we reacted pretty well," Vasquez said. "In the second half we came to play." DeRozan made six free throws in the final 24 seconds to seal the victory. "We always find ways to fight through," DeRozan said. "We tried to turn up the aggressiveness, especially in the fourth quarter." Khris Middleton scored 20 points for Milwaukee, which has lost 13 of 14 games. Middleton made 6 of 9 shots after a shooting slump in which he made 14 of 41 over the past four games. DeRozan made a pair of free throws to give the Raptors a 98-94 lead with 24 seconds left. Giannis Antetokounmpo then made two free throws to pull Milwaukee within 98-96 with 20 seconds left. DeRozan made two free throws to give Toronto a 100-96 lead with 18.6 seconds to go. Jeff Adrien dunked with 11 seconds left, but DeRozan made two more free throws to cap the scoring. Both teams played short-handed for the second consecutive night. Lowry and starting forward Amir Johnson were out with injuries for Toronto. Milwaukee had only eight players available due to injuries. The Bucks was 1 of 9 from 3-point range while Toronto was 12 of 27. "That is where the difference was," Milwaukee coach Larry Drew said. "If you look at all the other categories, I believe we outscored them in the paint, more assists. A lot of good things we did do, but the 3-point line we did not do a good job defending." There were nine lead changes in the fourth quarter, but Vasquez hit a 3-pointer to give Toronto the lead for good at 86-84 with 5:24 left. DeRozan then hit a free throw and made a 22-foot jumper to give the Raptors an 89-84 lead. The Bucks pulled within 89-88, but DeRozan scored on a driving runner and Jonas Valanciunas converted a 3-point play to give the Raptors a 94-88 lead with 1:43 to go. NEW YORK -- NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says its possible some part of the instant replay process will take place at league headquarters, not just on the field. The competition committee is expected to examine the issue this off-season. Goodell said at his annual pre-Super Bowl news conference Friday that one scenario is that officials at the game will still make the final decision, but that someone in New York will also weigh in to ensure the correct call is made. Goodell says that the "input could be helpful" to "make sure theyre seeing any angle." Even though, honestly, I could have got four, I think. I hit the post, a few tips that they blocked and a two-on-one in the first my stick breaks." But Vancouver suffered another injury blow when centre Ryan Kesler left the game in the second period after a knee-on-knee collision with Jets centre Jim Slater. Canucks head coach John Tortorella said Kesler will be sent back to Vancouver for tests while his teammates keep travelling to games against Washington, Florida and Tampa Bay. "Hes going to get some imaging and well have a better indication of where hes at, but hes out for a while," Tortorella said. Slater said he didnt intentionally try to hurt Kesler. "I thought I had him lined up, he kind of bailed there at the last second there," Slater said. "I didnt stick my knee out or anything in his path, wasnt leading with my leg. I thought I actually took the worst of it. "Obviously, if hes hurt bad, I feel bad about that. It wasnt any intent. I thought I had him lined up and at the last second he tried to jump out of the way." Higgins scored the decisive goal with some quick stick-handling on his way toward Ondrej Pavelec, flipping the puck by him after the netminder went down. Andrew Ladd scored his 18th goal of the season and Michael Frolik added his 13th that put the Jets ahead 2-1 early in the third period.dddddddddddd Burrows had tied the game 2-2 at 11:17 of the third period. Vancouver is now 2-4-1 in their last seven games. The game was a big improvement for the Canucks, who collapsed on Monday and gave up seven goals in the third period in a 7-4 loss to the New York Islanders. Pavelec stopped 30 of the 32 shots he faced in regulation and overtime, while Eddie Lack made 31 saves for Vancouver. Lack had let in six goals in the embarrassing loss to the Islanders. "I just needed a big bounce-back game and I was really happy we got the win," Lack said. The Canucks now have 70 points and Winnipeg 69 as they battle for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Dallas holds the last wild-card berth with 74 points. Phoenix has 73. The Stars and Coyotes were idle Wednesday night. The Jets are 0-2-3 in their last five and host the New York Rangers on Friday. "We got opportunities to get the second point there the last couple games. Weve got to start getting them," said Jets rookie defenceman Jacob Trouba, who logged almost 28 minutes of ice time. "Those are points were letting slip away. Its good that we get one and we look at the positives and try to think about that, but at the same time its at the back of your mind -- youve got to get those points that youre letting go." Vancouver outshot Winnipeg 14-9 in the scoreless first period, but the Jets outshot the Canucks 16-5 in the third. Vancouver was 0 for 5 on the power play and the Jets went 0 for 4. "I thought we played hard right on through, and thats two out the last three games weve played well in the third period so good for them," Tortorella said. "Theyve hung in, theyve hung together. Losing a big guy like Kes, I thought they stuck together as a group. It was real nice to see." Notes: Henrik Sedin was marking a major milestone, playing in his 1,000th NHL game, all with Vancouver. He was drafted third overall by the Canucks in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Not even some inside information from Olympic teammate Zach Parise could stop T.J. Oshie in a shootout. Oshie and Alexander Steen scored shootout goals and the St. Louis Blues took over the top spot in the NHL standings with a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Wild on Sunday night. In his first shootout since his memorable Olympic performance against Russia, Oshie beat Ilya Bryzgalov -- a Russian who wasnt on the team that lost to Oshie and Team USA in Sochi-- over his shoulder in the first round. Steen sealed the win in the following round after the Blues Brian Elliott turned away Parise and Mikko Koivu. "I think I was talking to Zach about that move tonight over in Sochi and he might have told Bryz what it was," Oshie said about his backhand-to-forehand move. "It seemed like he had me and I got a little lucky. It mustve just squeaked inside the post. I got a little fortunate on that one, but Ill keep taking them." The Wild fell behind 2-0 early, but tied it with second-period goals from Jason Pominville and Matt Moulson. Not many teams are able to come back on St. Louis, which only allows 26.4 shots and 2.22 goals per game. "I think that they thought they were going to take it to us physically and I think our guys responded to that," Wild coach Mike Yeo said. "I think we got into it, we started being physical on their defencemen. We really started to get in our game and from that point on, I thought we were the better team." Oshie and Carlo Colaiacovo scored on the second and third shots of the game for St. Louis. It was Colaiacovos first goal since Feb. 11, 2012, a span of 42 games. Bryzgalov had 21 saves in his first start for Minnesota since coming over in a trade with Edmonton on Tuesday. Like Oshie, Bryzgalov also thought he had the save in the shootout. "You know, pretty much I almost had it. I dont know how he raised it over the shoulder," he said. "I thought there was no way to go for him. I was completely surprised he scored on that one." The "legend" of Oshie in shootout situations continues to get bigger, even among teammates. "When I see Osh going in on a shootout, I kind of giggle," Blues centre David Backes said. "I told him afterward that the goalies are starting to play like soccer goalies because theyre just guessing left or right. Hes got moves left, got moves right, got moves straight ahead. Its pretty special to watch and Ive seen it a lot." The momentum shifted in the second after Pominville scored at 3:11 to make it 2-1. Moulson tied it 4 minutes later with his first goal in a Wild sweater since being acquired in a trade with Buffalo on Wednesday. Mikko Koivu intercepted a clearing attempt and zipped the puck to Moulson, who was in front of the net and knocked it past Brian Elliott. Elliott stopped 17 shots and kept the game tied at 2 with a lunging stick save to deny Mikael Granlund with 13 minutes left in the third period. "I tried to kind of charge him because I thought he was going to tip it," Elliott said. "He managed to stop and pull it around me, so it was desperation. I try to rob the guys in practice and sometimes it pays off when you can make those stick saves in games." Granlund was again denied by Elliott from in close early in the overtime session. The Blues have won 16 in a row against the Central Division and are now 18-0-1 in division play. Theyve beaten Minnesota eight straight times, outscoring the Wild 25-10. The Wild are 14-6-2 since Jan. 2, but lost their second straight after a five-game winning streak. Both teams played Saturday night and appeared tired at the end of the third period and in overtime. Theres still a ways to go, but both teams could end up facing each other in the opening round of the playoffs. "Its a team that, in all reality, we could be squaring off against in the playoffs too," Parise said. "I know theres a long time until that, but I thought we matched up well against them. We like the way we played. Some great opportunities at the end, just wouldnt go for us." NOTES: Blues F Magnus Paajarvi was a healthy scratch and was replaced by Chris Porter, who was recently recalled from AHL Chicago. ... The Wild didnt register a shot on goal until 7:02 of the first period. St. Louis didnt get a shot for the first 12 minutes of the second period. ... Minnesotas Kyle Brodziak and the Blues Steve Ott fought 2 minutes into the game. Roberto Osuna Jersey . The Winnipeg Goldeyes scraped home a run in the first inning and then let their young pitchers do the rest. Ray Sadler singled home leadoff hitter Tyler Kuhn with the only run of the game and then Kyle Anderson, David Hatt, Christian Garcia, Gabe Aguilar, Taylor Sewitt and Alex De La Cruz pitched shutout baseball, as the Goldeyes beat the Sioux Falls Canaries 1-0 in an American Association pre-season game at Shaw Park on Tuesday night. Goldeyes manager Rick Forney had high praise for all of his pitchers, but was especially impressed with Anderson. "Kyle did a good job and was very efficient for his first time out," said Forney. "He threw strike one and he knows what he needs to do to be successful – stay ahead in counts. He did a good job of that tonight. "He has movement on his pitches and he knows it and uses it to his advantage. I cant wait to see him get out there and pitch again." It was a chilly evening for baseball in downtown Winnipeg and it obviously favored the pitchers. Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea promised that hed look closely at his young hurlers on Tuesday and he did just that. Anderson, Hatt, Garcia and De La Cruz are all newcomers, while Aguilar and Sewitt pitched part of last season in Winnipeg, but are both considered American Association rookies this year. In two pre-season games this spring, 13 Goldeyes pitchers have combined to throw 18 shutout innings.Hatt allowed no runs on one hit over two complete innings and got credit for the win. Starter John Brebbia allowed the only run of the game and took the loss for Sioux Falls. Winnipegs Alex De La Cruz pitched a three-up-three-down ninth and got the save. "De La Cruz has a good young arm and I was certainly encouraged by his outing tonight," said Forney. "I was happy with all our guys. They did a good job." While Sadler knocked in the games only run, it was player of the game Josh Mazzola who had the best night at the plate. Mazzola went two-for-two with a walk. The same two teams will meet again Wednesday night, 7 p.m. at Shaw Park. It will be the final pre-season game in Winnipeg this spring. The Goldeyes will head out to Lincoln on Thursday. The Yankees made the moves before Tuesdays game against Baltimore. Robertson was listed retroactive to Monday. Robertson posted two saves in three games as the replacement for retired Yankees closer Mariano Rivera before getting hurt. Robertson said he felt discomfort during Sundays outing at Toronto, and doesnt expect to be sidelined for more than 15 days. The 25-year-old Cabral made his major league debut last year with the Yankees, pitching 3 2-3 innings. He had a 0.00 ERA in 9 1-3 innings during spring training this year. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he wanted to add another left-hander with the team facing the Orioles and Boston this week. Robertson felt discomfort Sunday five or six pitches into the ninth inning of a 6-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays, his second save in three outings this season. "Its really disappointing," Robertson said Monday after New York beat Baltimore 4-2 in its home opener. "I wouldve loved to have been out there pitching the ninth today, especially on opening day here." Instead, Robertson had an MRI that revealed a Grade 1 strain and setup man Shawn Kelley earned his first career save. Kelly pitched a perfect ninth that ended with him catching a toss from first baseman Kelly Johnson and keeping the game ball.dddddddddddd "Exciting," said Kelley, who learned Sunday night he might fill in for Robertson. Robertson doesnt expect his absence to last more than the required 15 days. "Anytime I sit for a handful of days I feel good as gold," Robertson said. "I think it will be rest a little while, play catch and get a bullpen and get right back in there." Robertson made a smooth transition to closer after Rivera retired at the end of last season with a major league-record 652 saves. An All-Star setup man, Robertson was only eight for 18 in save chances during six seasons before taking over the role. Hes allowed one hit in three scoreless innings this year. The Yankees bullpen was impressive without him Monday. Adam Warren pitched the eighth and after a leadoff walk he retired three straight, striking out All-Stars Adam Jones and Chris Davis to end the inning. "Were going to try to step up and fill that void for a brief period of time," Warren said. Also, first baseman Mark Teixeira had an MRI that confirmed he had a Grade 1 right hamstring strain. Placed on the DL Saturday, Teixeira thinks he will only need the minimum time out. He said he will begin an exercise program Tuesday. "I knew that it wasnt anything major when I did it," Teixeira said. ST. LOUIS -- Jon Jay did not pick up a bat while missing five successive games with a sore wrist. Once he returned on Tuesday, the St. Louis outfielder quickly made up for lost time. Jay hit an RBI single with two outs in the eighth inning to break a tie and lead the Cardinals to a 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox in a battle between the two World Series teams from last fall. "It just felt great to be back out there," Jay said. "Even better to come through." The Cardinals won their third in a row and fourth in the last five. Boston has lost three in a row. Jay blooped a hit to left off reliever Junichi Tazawa (1-3) to bring in former Red Sox A.J. Pierzynski with the winning run. All-Star reliever Pat Neshek (5-0) picked up the win by striking out the side in the eighth. St. Louis closer Trevor Rosenthal recorded his NL-leading 35th save in 39 chances. "Today was a big day for us," St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. "There were great at-bats from everybody." Especially Jay. "I didnt swing at all until today," Jay said. "But it feels good." St. Louis starter Lance Lynn gave up two runs on four hits over seven innings. Boston starter Rubby De La Rosa surrendered one run on six hits over six innings. Pierzynski started the winning rally with a two-out hit. He was signed by the Cardinals on July 26 after being released by the Red Sox on July 16. "Everyone wants me to say bad things about the Red Sox and Im not going to do that," Pierzynski said. "Im not bitter about what happened. It just didnt work. I dont have one hard feeling. The only thing is I didnt play well enough. I have nothing but respect for the organization and how they handled everything. I was proud to say I was a Red Sox." Oscar Taveras followed Pierzynskis hit with a single to set the stage for Jay. "They did a good job of putting the bat on the ball," Boston manager John Farrell said of the Cardinals. "It seemed like Junichi had the eighth inning well in hand with two out, two strikes and nobody on. Three consecutive base hits and that was the difference." WHERE ARE THE CHAMPS? Only 13 players remain from the Red Sox 25-man roster that won the World Series last fall. Through trades and attrition, the average age of the team dropped from 31 on Opening Day, to 28 on Tuesday. KNUCKLEBALL MAN The Red Sox have recalled knuckleball specialist Steven Wright from Triple-A Pawtucket. Wright will be making his first stint on the roster this season after four appearances last year. WACHA ON WAY BACK St. Louis RHP Michael Wacha began throwing on flat ground Tuesday in hopes of returning to the starting rotation in early September. ON DECK St. Louis RHP Shelby Miller (8-8, 4.14) will face close friend Joe Kelly (2-2, 4.37) in the second game of the three-game series on Wednesday. Kelly, who spent two-plus seasons with the Cardinals, will be making his first start for the Red Sox since being acquired in a trade July 31. He wound up deciding the game. Penas second career pinch-homer started Cincinnatis big eighth-inning rally and swept the Reds over the Milwaukee Brewers 8-3 Thursday night. The Reds hit three homers in all as they pulled within 6 1/2 games of the NL Central leaders. Tucker Barnhart led off the fifth with his first career homer. Todd Frazier added a two-run drive in the sixth off Marco Estrada, who gave up six hits and four walks in six innings. Pena had homered during a 9-4 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night. He batted for Bailey with the score tied at 3 in the eighth and connected on the first pitch from Jim Henderson (2-1) for a two-run homer. "I was just thinking about driving the ball and hitting it hard somewhere," Pena said. "He got a pitch up and I was able to take advantage of it. I wasnt expecting a homer, but Ill take it." Cincinnati sent 11 batters to the plate while scoring five times during the inning against a bullpen that entered the series with the fourth-best ERA in the league. It had one very bad inning. "Theyre going to happen, no doubt," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "Weve been good down there. We just werent good tonight." Homer Bailey (2-2) allowed eight hits in a season-high eight innings, finally returning to form after missing much of spring training with a strained groin. "This game was good for all of us," Bailey said. "Were fixing to turn things around. Weve had a lot happen already this year. This one showed were starting to come together as a group." Milwaukee has lost back-to-back games for only the second time this season. The Brewers havent dropped more than two in a row. Cincinnati opened the four-game series with another injury. Leadoff hitter Billy Hamilton sprained knuckles on his left hand while making a diving catch in centre field and will miss a few games. Hamilton stretched all out to reach Carlos Gomezs line drive that opened the game. He grimaced and flexed his left hand and wrist as he gott up.dddddddddddd Chris Heisey hit for him in the bottom of the inning. Hamilton hurt the middle finger on his left hand while sliding into base during the opening week of the season and missed two games. "Unfortunately, its the same hand that he hurt in New York," manager Bryan Price said. "Were optimistic that hell only miss a day or two, but we wont know for a day or two." Gomez stole a hit from Joey Votto in the bottom of the first, catching his fly at the top of the wall in centre. Votto pointed two fingers toward Gomez, who also stole a potential go-ahead homer from him for the final out in Milwaukees 4-3 win last July 8. Jean Segura singled in a run in the second, and Gomez doubled home a pair of two-out runs to tie it 3-all in the seventh. Milwaukee got two players back in the lineup, but outfielder Ryan Braun missed his fifth game because of a strained oblique. Braun is expected back this weekend. Segura returned at shortstop after being out of the starting lineup for four games because of an injury to his face. Third baseman Aramis Ramirez was back after missing two games with a sore left elbow and went hitless, extending his slump to 0 for 25. Outfielder Logan Schafer is eligible to return from the disabled list on Saturday, recovered from a strained right hamstring. For now, Roenicke is using Mark Reynolds in right field, a position the infielder played during spring training. NOTES: RHP Wily Peralta (3-1) faces RHP Mike Leake (2-2) in the second game of the series. ... The Brewers called reliever Rob Wooten. Milwaukees bullpen has thrown the fifth-most innings in the majors. Utility player Elian Herrera was optioned to Triple-A. ... The Reds put LHP Tony Cingrani on the DL with a sore pitching shoulder. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Sam Fuld had enjoyed plenty of success at Tropicana Field. For the Minnesota Twins, big moments in the ballpark had been fleeting. Aaron Hicks hit a three-run homer, Fuld had a pair of RBI doubles and the Twins beat the Tampa Bay Rays 9-7 Thursday, Kurt Suzuki drove in three runs for the Twins, who won two of three for their first road series win against the Rays since September 2006. "In this ballpark, you never feel safe," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We basically threw everything at them we had." Gardenhire moved past Chuck Dressen into sole possession of 59th place on the career victory list with 1,009. Fuld, claimed off waivers from Oakland on Sunday, had two hits in his Twins debut Wednesday and added three more Thursday. He spent the previous three years with the Rays. "Its nice to come back and contribute," Fuld said. After having a four-run lead cut to one, Minnesota went ahead 8-3 in the fifth on a run-scoring double by Fuld and Hicks shot off reliever Heath Bell. It was Hicks first homer since July 14 against New York Yankees ace CC Sabathia. "He was excited," Gardenhire said. "Its good to see. You knew it was going to be one of those kind of games. The guys came out and scored some runs, and then we just hold on." Ricky Nolasco (2-2) allowed six runs and 10 hits over six-plus innings. Glen Perkins pitched the ninth for his fifth save. The Twins were coming off a 6-4, 12-inning win over the Rays Wednesday that ended at 11:58 p.m. "Weve been battling," Nolasco said. "A long game last night. Guys came back ready to go today." Erik Bedard (0-1) gave up four runs, five hits and five walks in four innings. It was the eighth time in 10 games that Tampa Bays starter went five or less innings. "Early on he just kept missing," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "It wasnt like he was throwing the ball badly, but he kept missing inside. But 90 pitches after four (innings), I like the fact that he got that deep." The Twins took a 3-0 lead in the first with the help of four walks and two hits off Bedard. Suzuki had a two-run single and Fuld hit an RBI double. James Loney drove in the first of his two runs with a double before David DeJesus got the Rays within 4-3 on a two-run homer in the second. After seventh-inning sacrifice flies by Desmond Jennings and Matt Joyce, Tampa Bay cut the deficit to 9-7 in the eighth on pinch-hitter Logan Forsythes RBI single off Jared Burton. Bell departed after Suzukis RBI infield single went off his leg in the sixth. Juan Carlos Oviedo, coming back from elbow ligament replacement surgery, replaced Bell and went 1 1-3 scoreless innings in his first major league appearance since Sept. 21, 2011, with Miami when he was known as Leo Nunez. NOTES: Fuld got a nice ovation before his first at-bat Wednesday. When asked before Thursdays game about Fuld being back in the lineup, Gardenhire smiled and said "the fans are like they want to see him, so well play him." ... Minnesota C Joe Mauer and Hall of Famer Dave Winfield will co-host the Players Trust All Star Golf Tournament at Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn., on July 16 to raise funds for area childrens charities. ... Twins RHP Kevin Correia (0-2) and Detroit RHP Rick Porcello (2-1) will pitch in the opener of a three-game series Friday night. ... MELBOURNE, Australia -- Swedens Caroline Hedwall had a hole-in-one and finished with a 7-under 65 on Friday to take the second-round lead in the Womens Australian Open. The Solheim Cup star aced the 160-yard par-3 16th, eagled the par-5 eighth after hitting to 4 feet and had five birdies and two bogeys at Victoria Golf Club to reach 11-under 133, one shot ahead of second-ranked Suzann Pettersen of Norway. "I couldnt see it and the crowd didnt want to yell because Laura (Davies) was hitting off on No. 17, so we walked up there and they were like, It went in!" Hedwall said. "Yesterday I hit a full 7-iron over the green (for bogey) and it was basically the same yardage today. So, I hit a softer 7-iron. It covered the pin the whole way and I just saw it bounce once and hit the pin, but I didnt see it go in." Winless on the LPGA Tour, Hedwall was a record 5-0-0 last year in Europes Solheim Cup victory in Colorado. "Im driving pretty well," Hedwall said. "I missed a couple of drives yesterday and today but I managed to save a coouple of bogeys and Im still making a lot of birdies and also eagles.ddddddddddddquot; Pettersen, the first-round leader after a 66, had a 68. "Today, was not the best day, but when I had a good chance, I kind of executed," Pettersen said. "Just not a great day, but sticking to the theme, coming down, finishing and coming back to my good feel. Its very, very close. Ive got to trust my feels and what I have to do." Australian amateur Minjee Lee was 9 under after a 67. The 17-year-old Lee was second behind Cheyenne Woods last week in the Australian Ladies Masters. "It was such a slow start," Lee said. "I started with nine pars. I was just patient and it came together late in the round." Swedens Anna Nordqvist had the round of the day, a 64 that broke the course record for women. She was tied for fourth at 8 under with 16-year-old New Zealander Lydia Ko and Englands Holly Clyburn. Ko and Clyburn shot 68. Woods, Tiger Woods niece, was tied for 20th at 5 under. She followed her opening 74 with a 65. Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley told local media in comments published Wednesday that John Tomic would not be allowed into Melbourne Park in any official capacity or as a spectator.NEW YORK - In the summer of 2006 John Salmons nixed a sign-and-trade deal that would have made him a Raptor heading into the prime of his career. He was 26 years old at the time and coming off his best season in Philadelphia. But his faith had led him in a different direction, it led him to Sacramento. Over seven years later, his career has come around full circle. He starred for playoff teams in Chicago and Milwaukee, ended up back with the Kings and now, fate - in the form of a seven-player swap - has finally steered him to Toronto. The 34-year-old swingman was supposed to be a spare part in the salary dump of Rudy Gay, a contract that could be bought out at an affordable price in the offseason or moved at the deadline. He still may end up being those things but two weeks into his ironic tenure in Toronto, he has brought something no one expected him to, something the Raptors have been without for years. As head coach Dwane Casey has put it, Salmons brings "old-school toughness." "He has a settling effect when hes in the game and it helps us," Casey said of Salmons, who is averaging 6.7 points and 3.2 rebounds, playing just under 26 minutes per game in six contests with the Raptors. "He doesnt get rattled." A versatile defender, Salmons has been used to frustrate the opponents best wing player, most notably Monta Ellis and Kevin Durant in a pair of surprising road victories last week. Hes been one of the first players off Caseys bench, a facilitator in the offence down the stretch but most importantly, hes been a calming presence in the face of adversity and thats rubbing off on his new teammates. After engineering a 19-point comeback in Dallas and withstanding a run from the leagues best team in Oklahoma City, the team pointed to Salmons and his understated brand of leadership. "Im not a rah-rah guy at all," the even-keeled Salmons admitted after Sundays win over the Thunder. "But Ive been around for a long time, Ive experienced a lot so I just try to give my advice when I can." "Being in the league as long as Ive been Ive seen a lot of things and I just try to show poise on the court and lead like that." If you didnt know any better you could easily mistake Salmons unflappable persona for indifference but that, as his new coach has learned, is not the case. "Hes very quiet, [a] quiet leader," Casey said. "He does more [with] his actions than his words but hes a solid man. You engage him inn conversation and he has a lot to say.dddddddddddd. People take that quietness for, whatever but he has a lot to say once you sit down and talk with him. "I like his demeanour. I like his approach. Hes an old-school pro." Its been some time since the Raptors have rostered a vet able and willing to make that type of impact on the teams younger players. You may have to go all the way back to the days of Charles Oakley, Kevin Willis, Doug Christie and the veteran-laden teams that helped turn Vince Carter into an overnight superstar. "I remember walking in [on] day two," Carter reminisced before facing the Raptors in Dallas last week. "And Oak grabbed me by the shoulder and said, hey, Im going to take care of you and show you how to be a professional and be a pro in this league. "And I think of those days and I think of coming to practice when they used to kick the ball in the stands and what do you say? Nothing, youve just got to go get it. You learn a lot from that." Salmons is not Oakley - few are - but his experience and know-how could go a long way in the continued development of sophomores Terrence Ross and Jonas Valanciunas. Then theres DeMar DeRozan, another willing student who, in his fifth NBA season has been forced to learn on the fly without the benefit of a mentor. Veteran players have come and gone - DeRozan credited Reggie Evans and Jarrett Jack - but the roster has mostly been in flux since the 24-year-old was drafted. No one has been around long enough to truly take DeRozan under their wing. Salmons may not be a long-term fixture either, but for now DeRozan is taking in what he can. "Hes played in the playoffs, hes been a leader a long time, played with a lot of great guys," DeRozan said of his new teammates. "He knows how to play the game. "Were definitely paying attention to it, Im even paying more attention to it. I always look at it like, I could always learn more and thats what were doing." Salmons is due to make $7 million next season but the Raptors will only owe him $1 million should they waive him prior to June 30. For that reason, he could become a valuable trade chip and thanks to Masai Ujiris timely acquisition of the four Kings players, he can be repackaged before the February deadline. His time in Toronto may end up being short-lived but even as a temporary player, he could have a long-lasting impact on the future of the Raptors franchise. PALM HARBOR, Fla. -- John Senden never imagined it would take more than seven years to win again. Even more surprising is how he won the Valspar Championship. Sunday at Innisbrook had all the trappings of a tournament that is survived more than it is won. Robert Garrigus, who started the final round with the lead, hit a tee shot that bounced off a lawn chair and wound up next to a tree, leading to a double bogey. Kevin Na, playing in the final group, missed a 3-foot putt and made a double bogey during a meltdown at the end of his front nine. Each mistake brought more players into the mix on the Copperhead course until at one point there were nine players separated by three shots with more than an hour to go and the treacherous "Snake Pit" stretch of three fearsome closing holes ahead. But thats where Senden seized control -- on the 16th hole, with a shot into the trees. In a three-way tie for the lead with Na and Scott Langley, Sendens tee shot was headed for a tiny forest when it smacked off a tree and left him an opening. "I got a pretty good break there with hitting the tree and dropping straight down," he said. "Then I hit a really good second shot to get in some sort of position near the green. Walking up to the shot, I just felt like, OK, I need to hit a really good shot here to get this up-and-down and try to have a chance to do something down the stretch. "I thought it came out well," he said. "It disappeared. Amazing." He chipped in from 70 feet for birdie to break the tie. He made a 20-foot birdie putt on the next hole to stretch his lead to two shots. And when he could hear Na made a birdie putt on the 17th hole behind him to cut the lead to one, the 42-year-old Australian hit one might have been his best putt of the day that didnt go in. It was a 40-foot putt that went up a ridge and moved slightly to the right, and then went down the slope and sharply to the left. Senden hit it so well that he only had a few inches left to tap in for his par and a 1-under 70. All that was left was to wait to see if Na could make birdie and force a playoff. Na caught a flier out of the first cut of rough with a pitching wedge to 40 feet, and the birdie putt didnt have a chance. He closed with a 72 to finish second, his best result on the PGA Tour since he won at Las Vegas at the end of 2011. "I knew coming into today that I felt like if I shot par I had a chance to win," Na said. "If I break par, I felt like it was going to be a lock." Senden finished at 7-under 277, the third straight event on the Florida swing where the winning score was single-digit under par. He wasnt thinking about all the perks that go along with winning, though he was clear on one thing -- he wont have the week off the second week in April. Senden earned a spot in the Masters, always the biggest major for Australians, even with Adam Scott winning last year. He also locked up a berth in the PGA Championship, two World Golf Championships the rest of the year (at Firestone and Shanghai) and Kapalua to start next year. Its a good feeling for Senden, one that he had forgotten. His only other PGA Tour win was in 2006 at the John Deere Classic. Senden capped off that year by winning the Australian Open at Royal Sydney. "Its something that makes you believe more than you can get it done again, rather than just once and thinking back then in 06, Was it a flash in the pan? I dont believe so," Senden said. "But now it makes me feel (validated) from the John Deere." Scott Langley, hitting superb shots to account for the wind, didnt hit a green over the final four holes and still managed to save par on three of them. The one bogey on the 16th hole, when he went long of the green from the middle of the fairway, proved costly. Langley and David Hearn were the only players who shot par or better all four days. Langley closed with a 70 to finish alone in third. Garrigus made two double bogeys on his way to a 41 on the back nine. He also went 26 holes without a birdie dating to the third round Saturday, when he led by as many as four shots. By the time he made birdie at No. 14, it was too late. Garrigus, now 0-4 when he has at least a share of the 54-hole lead, closed with a 75. He tied for fourth with Will MacKenzie (69) and Luke Donald (70). "I know what Im not going to be doing next year -- fishing," said Garrigus, who figures he caught three dozen large-mouth bass this week. "Im going to bring a damn chain saw out to the place and cut a few trees down. I kept hitting it behind them all day. I just didnt get any breaks." Sean Bergenheim scored with 4:31 left to break a third-period tie, and the Florida Panthers snapped a five-game losing streak in a 3-2 win over the Stars on Sunday. Bergenheim put the Panthers ahead for good when he redirected Colby Robaks drive from the left circle. "I just tried to put my stick down on the ice and he (Robak) found it. It was a really nice play by him," Bergenheim said. The Stars still hold a one-point lead over the Phoenix Coyotes for the second Western Conference wild-card spot. They missed a chance to extend their points lead against a team that has been struggling. "We stopped skating. You cant do that, you have to play a full 60 minutes in these games," Stars forward Jamie Benn said. "We knew it wasnt going to be easy, theyre not going to give us these games. We have to put this one behind us; it was obviously a terrible outcome. We dont want to remember this one." Scottie Upshall and Brandon Pirri also scored for Florida, and. Roberto Luongo made 35 saves and beat Dallas for the first time in five starts. "Myself and also the team got better as the game went on. We had a really strong second half of the game," Luongo said. "Were competitors. Anytime we step on the ice, it doesnt matter what the circumstances are, you want to have that winning mind-set and try to win." Tyler Seguin and Benn had goals for the Stars, and Kari Lehtonen stopped 21 shots. Florida erased a 2-0 deficit on goals by Upshall and Pirri in the second period. The Panthers made it 2-1 when Erik Gudbransons shot was tipped by a Dallas player, hit Upshall and bounced into the net at 8:20 of the second.dddddddddddd "These are good games, the league tunes into these games and theyre big," Upshall said. "We have an opportunity here to play for something and those are fun games to play in." Florida tied when Pirri scored with 57 seconds left in the period. Jimmy Hayes slid a pass to Pirri in the slot for a one-timed shot high into net. "Obviously, theyre playing for their lives," Panthers coach Peter Horachek said. "Getting that second one and tying it up was a great momentum boost for us." Dallas took the lead 45 seconds into the game when Benn poked the puck past a defender and then wristed a shot past Luongo for his 33rd goal. Benn, who scored 40 seconds into Saturday nights 5-2 win at Tampa Bay, has three goals in two games. Dallas made it 2-0 just 39 seconds into the middle period when Seguin scored his 36th of the season during a power play. Seguins shot from the left circle went off the stick of a Florida defender and into the net, giving Seguin his fourth goal in four games. The Stars also struggled against Tampa Bay on Saturday, when they nearly blew a three-goal lead before pulling away in the third. "Tough points to lose, it wasnt a good game for us," Seguin said. "No excuses even though it was back to back. We expect better." NOTES: Pirri has a four-game point streak and has 12 points in 15 games. ... Benn has 21 points in 19 games. ... Dallas G Tim Thomas, traded by Florida to the Stars on March 5, didnt play. Thomas has been in just two of the past 10 games. ...
