The source of which traces itself back to the 1950 Finals, the only other time Brazil has played host to the grandest and greatest show on mother earth. The scene was The Estadio do Maracana, without a doubt world footballs global shrine and likely the greatest sporting amphitheatre on the planet and the 1950 World Cup Finals. Now lovingly restored for next summers tournament for a cost well in excess of half a billion, Maracana was inaugurated this past spring when England were fortunately invited to attend. A joyous occasion and celebration last June, but that was not the case on July 16, 1950. Close to 175,000 packed in to witness what they thought would be World Cup fame, glory and honour for their beloved football nation. MONTREAL -- Montreal Canadiens special teams finally came through. The Canadiens scored twice on the power play and fended off four minor penalties in their 3-1 come-from-behind victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday night. "Special teams are huge every game," said Andrei Markov, who tied the game 1-1 with the man advantage early in the third period. It was the first of three goals for the Canadiens in the final frame. "If you kill a penalty, score a couple of goals, you have a chance to win the game." Montreals power play is by no means modest. The team entered the game sitting sixth in the league with a success rate of 21.5 per cent. But the Canadiens special teams were slumping. They had only scored one power-play goal in their previous 21 opportunities. On Tuesday, Montreal (21-12-3) converted two-of-four chances with the man advantage. Markov scored the first after the Coyotes David Moss took a holding penalty at 2:01 of the third, and Max Pacioretty got the second with Oliver Ekman-Larsson penalized for delaying the game after batting the puck into the netting. Paciorettys 13th of the season was the winner, scored by shooting the puck into traffic in front of Mike Smiths goal. The puck ricocheted off defenceman Michael Stones skate and into the net at 13:18. Coach Michel Therrien put Paciorettys line on the ice for every Canadiens power play. Montreals power forward finished the game with 4:03 of ice time with the man advantage. "When coach gives you that type of opportunity, you want to deliver," said Pacioretty, who also assisted on Markovs goal. "Especially when things arent going how you want them to go, when he gives you an opportunity like that you want to prove that hes making the right decision. "I think that was our motivation as a line to step up." Former Canadien Mike Ribeiro also looked to special teams as his teams downfall. The Coyotes (18-10-5) were leading 1-0 before Moss headed to the penalty box. "We made mistakes, took some bad penalties," said Ribeiro. "Special units are part of the game, and if you cant get them to click, oftentimes youll lose the game." Ribeiro pointed to a second-period power play as the difference in the game. With Phoenix still in the lead, Brandon Prust was called for roughing at 6:51 of the second. Prust turned the penalty into a four-minute double minor by mouthing something to the referee, and was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct. But the Coyotes couldnt muster much offence with the extra skater. "After that power play in which we didnt create anything, they gained momentum," said Ribeiro, who made his eighth career appearance versus Montreal since being traded in 2006. "Our special teams didnt create momentum, didnt create much. They came back and scored." "Its disappointing. Its part of the game, but you cant take that and be happy about it. You need to grind it out and be stronger." Mikkel Boedker got the Coyotes on the board at 6:14 of the first period, banking his own rebound off his skate and into the net for his tenth goal of the year. The Coyotes outshot the Canadiens 15-3 in the first and had another 12 attempts blocked by Montreal players. The Canadiens threatened the Phoenix net with more gusto in the second, but still couldnt put one past Smith. The home team came close to tying the game when Pacioretty fired a one-time shot off the crossbar late in the period. Montreal finally found its equalizer to start the third when Markov beat Smith between the legs with a slapshot from the point. "As soon as Markov fired that one in, he didnt show too much emotion," said Pacioretty of the game-tying goal. "But you know hes fired up when he leans into a slapshot like that. We can look at different things in that game and say we did things the right way and we had some success. We didnt do things the right way and they had some success. So thats how we have to look at it, control what we can control. That game is done with. Its been done with. Its (not) coming back. The challenge ahead is what were focused on. The Cowboys struggled to slow down Kellys offense, but they can take a long gaze at what Seattle did Sunday. College football decisions often have a domino effect that can change the landscape of a program and nobody knows this more than the upstart Baylor Bears. In 2007, four-star dual-threat Quarterback Robert Griffin III had committed to the University of Houston under then Head Coach Art Briles. When Briles left Houston to take over Baylor, Griffin III, the top commit in Briles recruiting class, decided to follow him. After winning the Heisman in his junior season Griffin was the 2nd pick in the NFL draft. Many thought the Bears would return to the middle-of-the-pack in the Big 12 without their star QB, but all it took was one player and one very gifted head coach to turn the program around. Baylor currently sits at #5 in the BCS polls with a perfect 7-0 record, tops in their conference. They score the most points per game in the country (63.9) and have the 6th best defence (15.9). QB Bryce Petty has 18 TD and 1 INT and former Oregon Duck Lache Seastrunk has 869 yards rushing and 11 TD in 7 games. The offence is incredible, the defence can keep up and all because players are lining up to attend Baylor. 10 years ago Baylor had the 76th best recruiting class out of 117 Division I programs. Colorado State, Louisiana-Lafayette and San Jose State were among schools with better results. Now thanks to Griffin III and the recent success of the Bears program, last year Baylor ranked 31st. And this years crop is expected to be even better. Oregon is three spots higher in the polls and steals much of the attention as the must-watch team in college football but Baylor is every bit as fast and exciting. Baylor scored 8 touchdowns against Kansas last weekend, none of those drives took longer than 2 minutes. The likelihood of the Ducks and Bears meeting in a National Championship isnt very high with Alabama, Florida State and Ohio State still amongst the unbeaten, but it would be amazing if they did. The two schools are both on pace to break the record for most yards-per-game. The one knock against Baylor has been their strength of schedule, but thats about to change in a big hurry. Their remaining five games are against Big 12 teams that are either currently ranked or were ranked earlier in the season. They stay home for dates with #10 Oklahoma and #15 Texas Tech before travelling to No. 18 Oklahoma State and Texas Christian. The finale on December 7th will see the Texas Longhorns come to town in a game that could decide the conference. Drummond had 13 points and 17 rebounds, and the Pistons snapped a four-game losing streak with a 103-87 win over the Orlando Magic on Tuesday night. Drummond bounced back from a poor outing at Dallas over the weekend, and Detroit led comfortably throughout the second half. Detroit has struggled to close out games at home this season, but this time the Pistons turned a double-digit lead into a rout. "We needed it a lot. Were losing, a lot of bad things are around in the air -- a lot of negative energy," Detroit guard Will Bynum said. "Just happy to get a win."
