CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Jay Bruce homered again for a first-game win. Billy Hamilton finished off Cincinnatis biggest comeback of the season for a doubleheader sweep. Finally, the Reds sense they are making headway. Bruces homer sent Cincinnati to a 4-2 win in the opener on Tuesday, and Hamiltons ninth-inning single gave the Reds a 6-5 victory and a sweep of the last-place Chicago Cubs. With three wins in two days over Chicago, the Reds moved within 3 1/2 games of first-place Milwaukee in the NL Central, their smallest deficit since April 9. "It just unifies all of us," manager Bryan Price said. "We just feel really good right now." So good that some of them wanted to keep going at the end of a very long day. "Lets play three!" Hamilton said. "Im ready to go right now." The Reds fell behind 5-0 in the third inning of the nightcap. Their biggest comeback of the season had been two runs. They took advantage of a struggling team, sending Chicago to its fifth straight loss. Bruce doubled home the tying run in the eighth. Hamilton then had a broken-bat RBI single in the ninth off Hector Rondon (1-3) for the Reds first doubleheader sweep since 2009 against Pittsburgh. Hamilton has driven in six runs during the series, relishing the clutch situations. "I love em," Hamilton said. "I want to be the guy in a situation like that." The Cubs have been swept in all three of their doubleheaders this season. They havent won a game since trading starters Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to Oakland for a package of prospects. In the opener, Bruce returned to right field and hit another two-run homer, connecting off Travis Wood (7-7) during a three-run first inning. Johnny Cueto (9-6) extended his stretch of success against the Cubs. He is 5-0 in his last seven starts against Chicago with a 1.19 ERA. Chris Coghlan homered in both games and helped the Cubs get in position for a split, but Chicagos bullpen couldnt hold on. Coghlan hit the first of three homers off left-hander David Holmberg, who lasted only 2 2-3 innings in his Reds debut. Coghlan is 7 for 12 in the series with two homers and two doubles. Left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada made his major league debut and gave up an unearned run in five innings, leaving with a 5-1 lead. Hamiltons RBI triple cut it to 5-4 in the seventh, and Bruce -- playing first base in the nightcap -- had another pivotal extra-base hit against Pedro Strop. Rondon gave up a pair of singles to open the ninth, and Hamilton singled to the opposite field for the win. The Reds put first baseman Joey Votto back on the disabled list before Game 1, hoping a strained muscle above his left knee will heal enough to let him play this season. Theyre using different players -- including Bruce -- at the position for now. "The only thing you can see thats positive out of this is its creating opportunities for other guys to play and theyre taking advantage of it," Price said. Bruce played right field in the first game and connected in the first inning off Wood. That made three straight games in which the left-handed hitter had a two-run homer off a lefty. Bruce has 50 homers off lefties during the last five seasons, the most by any player in the majors. Cueto gave up six hits in 6 1-3 innings, including back-to-back homers in the sixth by Coghlan and Ryan Sweeney. Manny Parra pitched out of a one-out, bases-loaded threat in the seventh. Aroldis Chapman gave up a hit and a walk in the ninth while getting his 18th save in 20 chances. NOTES: The opening game made up an April 28 postponement. ... The start of the second game was delayed 35 minutes because of a forecast of rain. ... Junior Lake snapped an 0 for 20 slump with a single in the ninth off Chapman in the opening game. ... Reds C Brayan Pena was reinstated from the paternity list, filling Vottos roster spot. ... Reds 3B Todd Frazier will participate in the All-Star Home Run Derby. Martavis Bryant Raiders Jersey . CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Left-handed reliever Sean Marshall will have surgery on his left shoulder, which has bothered him for the last two seasons and repeatedly landed him on the disabled list. The Reds wont know how long hell be sidelined until doctors operate on the shoulder next Tuesday, manager Bryan Price said. Cincinnatis set-up man was on the disabled list twice last season with shoulder problems. He opened this season on the DL with a sore shoulder and was activated on April 19. He went on the 15-day disabled list last Saturday with more soreness. The Reds moved him to the 60-day DL on Friday. "There are some issues in there that arent going to get better through strengthening and stretching and inflammatory work," Price said. "He needs surgery to get those things corrected. Once he has the surgery, well have a better idea about a course of action and how long it will take before we can expect to see him again." The Reds also optioned left-hander Tony Cingrani to Triple-A Louisville on Friday and called up right-hander Jumbo Diaz before the start of their interleague series against the Toronto Blue jays. Cingrani is 2-8 with a 4.55 ERA in 11 starts and two relief appearances. He lost his spot in the rotation when Mat Latos returned from the disabled list and wasnt sharp in his two relief appearances. The left-hander has struggled since his stint on the disabled list because of a sore shoulder earlier this season. The Reds are planning to use Cingrani out of the bullpen once he gets back in form. "With a healthy starting five, thats where Tony can help us best this year," Price said. "Weve seen him pitch very efficiently at times out of the bullpen." Right-handed reliever Jumbo Diaz was called up to take Cingranis spot. It will be his major league debut following 12 seasons and 340 appearances in the minors. The 30-year-old pitcher got up to 340 pounds last season, but reported to spring training at 278 pounds. He was the closer at Louisville hoping to finally get a promotion. "Sometimes, you have some thoughts (about quitting)," Diaz said. "You wake up and youre like, Im working hard every day and I dont get the call, but you have to fight it because you never know when the call is going to come. I said, If I keep working hard every day and playing hard every day, someday Im going to get the call." Teammates congratulated him on his long-awaited promotion when he walked into the clubhouse on Friday. "I was so excited," Diaz said. "I stopped and looked around and said, Oh, my God. This is what Ive been waiting for for a long time." Also on Friday, the Reds transferred right-hander Trevor Bell to the 60-day disabled list and reinstated right-hander Brett Marshall from the 60-day DL and optioned him to Louisville. Eden Hazard and Samuel Etoo scored first-half goals as Chelsea came from behind to secure a 2-1 win over title rival Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday. After Martin Skrtel put the Reds in front from close range at Stamford Bridge after only four minutes, Hazard hit back in the 17th with a superb strike. Etoo gave Jose Mourinhos team a decisive lead from Oscars back pass in the 34th. Third-place Chelsea trails leader Arsenal by two points and Manchester City by one point. Liverpool is six points adrift after slipping to a second consecutive loss. Hazard was splendid throughout in his playmaker role, while Chelseas defenders did a good job of containing Luis Suarez, who was reunited with Branislav Ivanovic for the first time since he bit the Serbian defender on the arm last season and was banned for 10 games. With captain John Terry becoming the fourth Chelsea player to make 600 appearances for the club, the game started at a high tempo, with both sides involved in a gritty contest for possession. After Etoo was lucky to escape a booking for his challenge on Jordan Henderson, Liverpool made the most of the subsequent free kick, with Skrtel scoring a poachers goal from close range. Chelsea failed to clear Philippe Coutinhos free kick, Suarez headed the ball beyond Ivanovic and Skrtel tapped it home. Chelsea reacted immediately, only for Hazard to see his effort saved before Gary Cahill headed wide from Frank Lampards free kick in the eighth minute. Chelseas penalty appeals were waved away by referee Howard Webb after Hazard appeared to be clipped by Lucas in the box, and Lampard forced keeper Simon Mignolet to tip the ball over with a trademark powerful shot from outside the box. The home side was rewarded for its pressure soon afterward when Hazard gave Mignolet no chance with a superb curling shot for his eighth league goal of the season. Mourinho was forced to make an early defensive change as the injured Ivanovic was replaced by Ashley Cole after 30 minutes. But Liverpool struggled to contain the Blues relentless attacks and Etoo converted his teams dominance into a goal when he scored from close range from Oscars pass, despite Mignolet getting a hand to the ball. The Reds continued to threaten on the break and had a chance to level before the interval, with Joe Allens shot from the right side of the box drawing a good diving save from Petr Cech. There were further scoring chances in the second half, with Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho being unlucky to see his looping header hit the crossbar from a free kick as Cech looked well-beaten. At the other end, Etoo missed a clear-cut chance when he fired straight at Mignolet from a good position in the 54th. Suarezs volley four minutes later was easily stopped by Cech as Liverpool created more space in the hosts half. But Chelsea weathered Liverpools attacks and could even have won by a bigger margin. Former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres eased past Mamadou Sakho and Skrtel but failed to beat Mignolet with his shot in the closing stages. The France striker ended a run of seven matches without a goal when he broke the deadlock with a header from Theo Walcotts free kick in the 65th minute. It was Girouds 11th goal this season. Arsenal overtook Manchester City to regain top spot in the Premier League with 42 points from 19 matches, with City trailing one point behind. "There was a big satisfaction because we surprised many people and we want to go from there, we played two away games and got six points against West Ham and Newcastle and as you can see the team is ready for a fight," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. "Lets keep fighting and trying to develop the team." In a scrappy encounter with few chances for both sides, the hosts missed an opportunity to level the score in added time when Hatem Ben Arfa fired a shot wide. Mesut Ozil missed the game with a shoulder injury, and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said he expects the Germany midfielder to be out for Wednesdays game against Cardiff as well. Wengers team enjoyed long periods of possession and created several chances early on but was unable to convert them before Newcastle almost went ahead toward the end of the first half when Moussa Sissokos shot was tipped over by Wojciech Szczesny. Mathieu Debuchy also headed against the bar. Giroud had a chance to double the lead when Walcotts lob from close range was saved by Debuchy but the Frenchman failed to connect properly with the loose ball. Newcastle pushed forward toward the end but Alan Pardews team slipped to just its second loss in 10 Premier League matches. "We certainly didnt deserve to get beat but a mistake cost us at a set play, and we then had some moments at the end but we have come out with our confidence renewed even though we have lost," Pardew said. New manager Tim Sherwood earned his first win at White Hart Lane on Sunday as Tottenham easily beat Stoke 3-0 in the Premier League. Roberto Soldado converted his fifth penalty of the season in the first half while Aaron Lennon and Mousa Dembele added goals in the second for a comfortable win. It was Tottenhams first clean sheet in the league since Nov. 3 and the win puts Spurs level on points with Manchester United with 34 at the halfway point of the season. Tottenham next travels to Old Trafford to play United on Wednesday. Stoke never looked like threatening the Spurs goal, although had a penalty appeal waved away when Michael Dawson hacked down Oussama Assaidi in the box when the game was goalless. Three days after its first home loss in a year, Everton bounced back to beat Southampton 2-1 at Goodison Park in the Premier League on Sunday. The home side took the lead through Seamus Coleman in the ninth minute when the defender slotted into the net from close range. Southampton battled back and found the equalizer through Gaston Ramirez, who converted Adam Lallanas pass with a left-footed shot from outside the box in the 71st. But Romelu Lukaku, who came into the game without a goal in five matches, found the winner three minutes later to banish memories of the unlikely 1-0 loss to last-place Sunderland on Boxing Day. Olivier Giroud ensured that Arsenal will finish the year atop the Premier League standings by scoring the winner for the Gunners in a 1-0 win at Newcastle on Sunday. The UFC featherweight champion stepped up two weight divisions earlier this month but lost by submission to Diaz, who was a short-notice replacement for Rafael Dos Anjos.A potential rematch with Diaz has been suggested for the milestone UFC 200 event in July, held at Las Vegas brand new arena, but McGregors striking coach Owen Roddy has insisted that they havent been approached yet. If he beats Jose Aldo again, what does that really say? Frankie Edgar? That could possibly be the one. Rafael Dos Anjos? I dont think he wants the fight. McGregors coach Owen Roddy I havent heard it from Conors mouth yet so its just speculation at the moment, Roddy exclusively told Sky Sports. It seems to be the case but its not 100 percent yet.If he does what we have planned now, he can beat Diaz on the second occasion. It makes for the most exciting fight. If he beats Jose Aldo again, what does that really say? Frankie Edgar? That could possibly be the one. Dos Anjos? I dont think he wants the fight. But if Conor goes back and puts Diaz away, that would be amazing. Owen Roddy (right) is the man behind McGregors KO wins McGregor & Rousey: What now? How will UFC star duo react to defeat? McGregor, the 145lbs champion, was due to challenge for Dos Anjos 155lbs belt until the Brazilian withdrew, to be replaced by Diaz. Concerns about Diazs short-notice weight cut meant the hastily arranged fight was set at a 170lbs limit.Despite Diaz being ranked at No 6 in the lightweight (155lbs) division, Roddy insists McGregors team have no problem with revisiting welterweight (170lbs).He said: Its looking like 170 again but that isnt confirmed. Conor probably wants to prove it was a small mistake and he slipped up. I saw claims that the issue was fighting above his weight, but realistically Conorr walks around at the weight he was fighting at on that night.dddddddddddd Roddy insists weight isnt an issue for McGregor But everything still has to be confirmed. Until it is, its up in the air. Conor will get the offers, and it will be basically whatever he wants. Hell put it to [head coach] John Kavanagh, who gives his opinion, and we go from there. Ill go with whatever Conor wants because I really do believe he beats everybody. I dont care who they put in front of him in those weight categories.Confidence from the Irish camp stems from a belief that McGregor was comfortably beating Diaz until tiring in the second round, leading to his downfall.Roddy, responsible for McGregors striking training, thinks a few minor adjustments would result in another knockout victory. McGregor landed plenty of early punches against Nate Diaz He was winning the fight but punched himself out, Roddy said. He was trying to force the finish. He was landing his shots but, because Diaz was able to take them, Conor was throwing higher and higher combinations and got exhausted. The tables turned.Conor is smart, he read it very well. He believed he was trying to knock him out with every punch and was putting too much behind every shot. If we get him to only put power behind certain shots, he should reserve his energy more.In the build-up to the fight we had him moving a lot more but he didnt seem to do it because he was landing his shots and wanted to put the guy away. In the training, we had Conor counter-striking. Because he was landing so early, he got himself tired. If we stick to popping shots and moving, I think hell put Diaz away. DALLAS -- Columbus had a little head start with a chance to clinch just the second playoff berth in franchise history. The Blue Jackets took advantage right away Wednesday night. Artem Anisimov and Mark Letestu added first-period goals to the one Columbus already had when the puck dropped in a makeup game with Dallas, and the Blue Jackets withstood a frantic third period for a 3-1 victory over the equally playoff-hungry Stars. "Its been a long time," said winger Jared Boll, one of the few players remaining from the Blue Jackets last playoff team in 2008-09. "Its just the first step. Weve still got a long way to go." The Blue Jackets had a 1-0 lead when the puck dropped because that was the score March 10, the night the original game was postponed after Dallas forward Rich Peverley collapsed on the bench because of an irregular heartbeat. Anisimov doubled the margin on an unassisted goal just 1:33 into the game. That was 71 seconds faster than the goal last month by Nathan Horton, who got credit for it even though he didnt officially play because he missed the makeup game with a lower-body injury. "The only thing that was weird about it was looking up at the scoreboard in warm-ups and we had a 1-0 lead," Columbus coach Todd Richards said. "But once you got into the game, I had to remind myself when we scored the first goal that we were up 2-0, not just 1-0." The Blue Jackets set a franchise record with 42 wins, beating the previous mark from their only other playoff season. Columbus was swept by Detroit in the first round five years ago, and now those teams are in a battle for playoff position in their first season since being moved to the Eastern Conference. "Its fun right now to say we clinched, but we cant be satisfied with just getting in," said Boll, who missed four months with a torn ankle tendon. "We want to get there and make a splash." The Stars, who are in a franchise-record playoff drought thats a year longer than what Columbus endured, never really gave themselves a chance to build a cushion on Phoenix for the final playoff berth in the West. Dallas (89 points) has a two-point lead over the Coyotes, who have three games left to two for the Stars. "We fell behind before the game even started," Dallas forward Jamie Benn said. "That didnt help, but were not making any excuses." Dallas trailed 3-0 after the first and couldnt capitalize on power plays with fresh ice at the start of the second and third periods against Columbus goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, who stopped 17 of 18 shots in the third period and 33 of 34 overall. The Russian had to work harder at the start of the third, stopping Tyler Seguin on a backhand shot in the crease after Dallas leading scorer skated around the defence and turning away Benn from the wing a few seconds later. The Stars scored when they pulled goalie Tim Thomas for a 6-on-4 power play with nearly 14 minutes left in the game. Bobrovsky made a sprawling save before Trevor Daley punched in a rebound in a crowd in front of the net. "I broke my old record by a couple of minutes," Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. "I pulled a goalie one time in Atlanta with 9-something. I pulled it at even strength and we didnt score, but we scored the next shift and we pulled him late in the game and ended up tying it, and won it in overtime." Dallas outshot Columbus 18-2 in the third period, when the Stars went with an empty net for a total of about 5 minutes. The Stars ended up playing four times in five nights because of the makeup game, the same thing the Blue Jackets are doing to finish the season. Columbus was on the second night of a back-to-back and is the first team to play on four of the last five days of the season since Ottawa in 1993. Because of the busy schedule, Dallas coach Lindy Ruff went with Thomas over Kari Lehtonen. Thomas was fooled by Anisimov for the Columbus centres third goal in two games against the Stars, and Letestu made it 3-0 when his shot went off Daleys stick to the side of Thomas and somehow slid between the goalies legs. NOTES: STATS research going back to the 1989-90 season couldnt find an instance where a player scored a goal without officially playing in a game. Matt Calvert and James Wisniewski got credit for assists on Hortons goal. ... Daley tied his career high from three years ago with his eighth goal. Virgil van Dijk Liverpool Jersey . Jannero Pargo scored 14 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter to help the Charlotte Bobcats erase a 21-point deficit and rally for an 83-76 preseason victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday night. Each week, The Reporters put their thumbs out to the good and the bad in the world of sports. This week they discuss Joe Thorntons locker room comments, the Raptor Mascots injury, Canadas Olympic jerseys and the booing of Andrea Bargnani. Bruce Arthur, National Post: My thumb is up to big centre Joe Thornton of the San Jose Sharks. After 19-year-old teammate Tomas Hertl scored his fourth goal of the game on a brilliant between-the-legs play in a 9-2 win over the rangers, some suggested the youngster was too, uh, confident. During a question to this effect in Vancouver, Jumbo Joe interrupted a teammates scrum to tell reporters what he would do if he ever scored four goals in a game, and it would have made slap shots strip teasing hero Ned Braden blush. Yes, Thornton was foul-mouthed; maybe he didnt expect to be quoted, but there you are. At least he was honest, which we could use more of in hockey, and in sports. Now lets all pray, together, that Joe Thornton never scores four goals in a game. Steve Simmons, Sun Media: My thumb is down to the poor forever downtrodden Toronto Raptors and the season ending injury from which they cannot recover. And no, Im not talking about any of their players, not that any one of them would be thumb-worthy. Its their mascot, the Raptor, who is out after attempting a flip in a pre-season game in Halifax and ending up having surgery for a severed Achilles tendon. Normally, I could care less about fuurry arena-laden mascots.ddddddddddddMost of them annoy me. But this Raptor, working for a perpetually losing team, is many nights the best part of the show. A season without him just wont be the same. Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated: My thumb is down to Canadas Olympic third jersey, which, as you know, is black. Now you might have noticed that the national colors are red and white, pretty much from sea to sea to sea. Of course, Canada does feature some black. You have your Alberta oil sands and the black watch regiment. And theres Randy Carlyles heart after a bad turnover by a Maple Leafs defenceman. But in a two-week tournament, Canada hardly needs to deviate from the colors it has worn so proudly and successfully. Goalie Carey Price joked he likes the black sweater because he finds it slimming. I dont like it because I find it foreign. Dave Hodge, TSN: My thumb is down to the booing of Andrea Bargnani, but not just any Bargnani booing. Specifically, the booing of Bargnani, the New York Knick, at Fridays exhibition game. Now, I cant imagine going to an exhibition game for the purpose of booing anyone, but as you may know, I cant imagine going to an exhibition game period. Presumably, you boo an opposing player to somehow get him off his game, to somehow help the home team. If theres a way to make Bargnani pay for being such a letdown as a Raptor, for goodness sake, come up with it during the regular season. As we head into the final 10 days of the Blue Jays stay in Florida, there a couple of areas of concern. For one, the Jays havent scored more than five runs in 13-straight games. Of course, in the spring, the full everyday line-up is rarely together for more than a couple of games a week and even then, only a few innings at a time. Ryan Goins, for all he is capable of doing with the glove at second base, is only hitting .168 at last glance. Brandon Morrow, counted on so heavily this season, has had trouble commanding his four-seam fastball and has seemingly been dropped to the number-five slot in the rotatioon. On the flip side of that, Drew Hutchison has looked so good that he has been elavated to the number-two position in the rotation between R.A Dickey and lefty Mark Buehrle. Closer Casey Janssen started camp with should soreness, but he apppears to be doing well, throwing on the side and assures everyone he will be ready for opening day, despite not having seen any game action yet. J.A. Happs sore back seems to be coming around and hes been slotted in again as the number-four starter. The Jays Grapefruit Circuit record is only 7-10, but those records are rarely an indication of how a team is going to do in the regular season. A year ago, the Jays were 16-17 in Florida, yet only won 74 games for the 2013 campaign. St. Louis won the National League pennant after going just 16-15 in the spring. The Boston Red Sox played .500 ball in the sunny south at 17-17 in its first year under skipper John Farrell and then went on to beat the Cardinals in the World Series. In 2012, their final year with Farrell as manager, the Blue Jays went a scorching 24-7 in Dunedin, tops in the Majors, with a run differential of plus-79, yet they went on to stumble to just 73 wins during the season. The Detroit Tigers, though, werent too far behind the Jays at 20-8 and they made it to the World Series against San Francisco. The Giants had been 18-15 that spring and went on to win their second Fall Classic in three years. In 2011, the Kansas City Royals went 25-7, while the Seattle Mariners were 22-11. The Royals still havent made the playoffs since winning the World Series in 1985 and the Mariners havent made the playoffs in a dozen years. The most exciting aspect of spring training is watching the breakout performances of young players, as is with the case of the Jays Drew Hutchison this spring. The rest of it is just about hoping your team can open the season healthy and can come close to living up to expectations. - Injuries could play a part in the American League West race and, in turn, the Wild Card. Two of the Oakland As starters are down with arm troubles. Jarrod Parker has forearm stiffness, which can be a precursor to ellow trouble, and the 25-year-old righty already had one Tommy John surgery in 2009. A.J. Griffin has elbow issues as well, and will find out shortly if he needs Tommy John. Meanwhile, Seattles number-two starter Hisashi Iwakuma is recovering from a sprained ligament in the middle finger of his pitching hand and is iffy, at best, for the start of season. The Ms top pitching prospect, Taijuan Walker, has bursitis in his shoulder and will likely start the season in the minors on rehab. - Some of the National Leagues better clubs havent escaped the injury bug, either. Atlanta Braves starter Kris Medlen likely needs his seond Tommy John and Brandon Beachy could also be on track for his second. The Braves are also keeping a close watch on Mike Minors shoulder. Arizona Diamondbacks ace lefty Patrick Corbin is currently seeking a second opinion on whether or not he needs Tommy John. If that isnt bad enough for the D-Backs, the recently signed Bronson Arroyo, an iron man with the Cincinnati Reds, is out indefinately with a disc problem in his back. The Philadelphia Phllies, of course, lost Roy Halladay to retirement. Now their number-one starter, Cole Hamels, is dealing with left shoulder fatigue. Though hes starting to feel better throwing on the side, there is no guarantee Hamels will be ready for Opening Day. - I guess you could call it a Panama "Root Canal" for the New York Yankees over the weekend. While on their special goodwill tour of Panama, the home of their now retired future Hall of Fame closer, Mariano Rivera, the Yanks were no-hit by the Miami Marlins. It happened on Saturday at a jam-packed Rod Carew Stadium. The Marlins Brad Hand started off by throwing five perfect innings and striking out six. Steve Cishek came in for a scorless sixth-inning before A.J. Ramos blanked the Yankees in the next two innings and then Arquimedes Caminero finished off the no-no in the ninth. - We talked about a lot of the pitching injuries, but this one appears to be both serious and mysterious. Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias, a key pick-up from Boston in a three-way deal last season, has a severe case of shin splints in both legs caused by a problem with his feet. He could miss a large chunk of this season, maybe even the entire season, leaving Detroit without a legit number-one shortstop. - Its not exactly a Babe Ruth-ian differential, but the Baltimore Orioles Chris Davis had indeed a special season in the home run department last year. Daviss MLB-best 53 homers was nine better than American League runner-up Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers and 17 up on the National League co-leaders Pedro Alvarez of the Pittsburgh Pirates and the D-Backs Paul Goldschmidt at 36. The last time that happened was 2010, when the Blue Jays Jose Bautista slugged 54 homers, 15 more than AL runner-up Paul Konerko of the Chicago White Sox at 39 and 12 more than NL leader Albert Pujols, then of the Cardinals, at 42. An autopsy determined the 20-year-old Trafford died of self-inflicted asphyxiation. The Toronto natives body was found March 12. He disappeared eight days earlier after receiving discipline from the club. The Spirit lost the Ontario Hockey League game 6-2 to the London Knights at The Dow Event Center. London players lined up on their blue line and tapped their sticks on the ice as the Spirit players skated out on the ice. Spirit players aligned on the other blue line and the crowd stood as the team honoured Trafford with a moment of silence and a video montage on the scoreboard above the ice. At the end of the montage, the scoreboard read "One young man. Four years. One team. Many memories." "Our whole franchise, our whole community, is grieving right now," Spirit President Craig Goslin said.dddddddddddd "For four years, Terry was a fixture in this rink. He was a good kid and he did a lot of good things here." Saginaw players wore "TT16" stickers on their helmet and will honour their former teammate with black patches for the playoffs. Trafford played four seasons with Saginaw, scoring 29 goals in 221 games. Traffords funeral is set for Tuesday in Toronto. "He could really lighten up the room," said Spirit centre Eric Locke, teammates with Trafford for the last three seasons. "Hed make you laugh, make you smile. "We went back and forth. MANKATO, Minn. -- The Minnesota Vikings have pledged to make Kyle Rudolph a larger part of their offence for, well, his whole career. Now this enhanced role is almost inevitable: Hes carrying 15 fewer pounds this season and playing for a lot more money. "Its an honour to know that they have the faith in me and the trust in me to instil that value in me, and Im going to do everything I can to go out on the field and perform at that level," Rudolph said between practices on Monday, after signing a five-year contract extension the night before. He added: "I want to be the best tight end in the NFL, and thats why I go out every day to work the way that I do." The Vikings were enamoured enough with the soft-handed, slender Rudolph that they drafted him out of Notre Dame in the second round in 2011 despite a nasty injury, a torn right hamstring, that he was still recovering from at the time. Rudolph won the Most Valuable Player award at the Pro Bowl after the 2012 season, but he has accumulated a modest 1,055 yards and 15 touchdowns over three years in the NFL. Jimmy Graham exceeded both of those totals last season for New Orleans. Rob Gronkowski did the same three years ago for New England. The Vikings have long believed the 6-foot-6 Rudolph, who used a better off-season diet to start training camp at a lean weight of 258, can become that featured receiver who can catch passes all over the field, in addition to being a go-to target in the end zone. "I think hes trying to work the Jimmy Graham deal," close friend and quarterback Christian Ponder said, joking about Rudolphs sleeker look. "He looks good out here, and you can tell hes very polished in what hes doing." Rudolphs new deal has a maximum worth of $40 million. About half of that is practically guaranteed, and his annual average salary will be in the top five of all NFL tight ends. Graham makes the most. "Hes worked as hard as anyone in this organization, and he is getting himself ready to have a great year," offensive co-ordinator Norv Turner said. Rudolph, who missed the last half of last season because of a broken left foot, will be asked to run more routes up the seam between the 20-yard lines this year. Hell likely find himself standing up and split out a lot, rather than the traditional three-point stance for tight ends of the previous generation. With more rules discouraging defensive backs from levying big hits, larger, and faster and stronger athletes continuing to enter the league, and passing attacks become more and more potent, the tight end has flourished into a true skill position. Turner has a history of significant production by tight ends in his scheme, from Antonio Gates in San Diego to Jordan Cameron last year in Turners lone season with Cleveland. From Rudolph to running back Adrian Peterson, the early reviews of Turners system have been raving. "Im sure you guys wrote stories about us being predictable the past seven years. You wont be able to write that story this year," Peterson said. "Thats pretty much all Im saying: You wont be able to do that, because this offence is so versatile." The Vikings invested in Rudolph for reasons beyond the physical attributes, too. Head coach Mike Zimmer called him "a pleaser," whos willing to "buy into everything" the new staff is trying to do with the team. Rudolph said hed keep the same house in the Twin Cities area and continue to drive the same truck, splurging only for philanthropy: to upgraded the weight room at his alma mater, Elder High School in Cincinnati. "Im anticipating that hell continue to flourish," Zimmer said, adding: "Hes a good guy, and I like when good guys get rewarded." With less than 24 hours until his scheduled arbitration hearing, restricted free agent defenceman P.K. Subban isnt giving any big updates on contract talks, but maintains that the tone and open communication with the Montreal Canadiens have been good. "In respect to this negotiation, its been completely respectful on both sides," Subban told TSN Radio 690 on Thursday. "Theres mutual respect from both sides in this. Its been great - Im happy with the communication...both sides are working hard to get things done and when it gets done, were looking for it to be best for the Canadiens and myself." According to reports on Wednesday, the Canadiens submitted their arbitration brief with a salary of $5.25 million on a one-year contract, while Subban - represented by agent Don Meehan of Newport Sports - is asking for $8.5 million. The news, coupled with reports and tweets updating Subbans actions and whereabouts over the last couple of days, have sent Canadiens fans into a frenzy. Subban said he well aware of it, even going so far as to take a famous quote from his teammate to settle things down. "You can tell the fans to relax - I waxed my back yesterday and I dont have any hair on my back," Subban joked to TSN Radio 690. "I dont know what the craze is about, but everybodys just got to chill out. As Carey (Price) said, just chill out." The Canadiens and Subbans camp are set to meet for their arbitration meeting on Friday morning at 9am et in Toronto. The one-year offer from both sides would still make Subban a restricted free agent with arbitration rights next summer. "When it comes to negotiation, I let my agent take care of that," Subban said. "Obviously, Ive been adamant, and Ive repeated it many times - about how I feel about the province, the team and the organization. Its all been consistent. So theres no reason for anybody to think that has changed. "But in terms of a negotiation, this is business now. This is not just about P.K. as a hockey player. This is business between whats best for P.K. and whats best for the organization. And its been mutual respect on both sides." Subban, who signed a two-year deal worth an average annual value of $2.875 million contract prior to the 2012-2013 season, scored 10 goals and added 43 assists in 82 games with the Canadiens in 2013-14. He also added five goals and 14 points in 17 playoff games and was part of the Canadian mens Olympic team that won gold in Sochi in February. Subban was awarded the 2013 Norris Trophy as the NHLs top defenceman after notching 11 goals and 27 assists in 42 games. Marc Gasol, coming off a career-high 32 points in Memphis season-opening win over Minnesota, deposited 20 points with six rebounds. Mike Conley added 17 points in the win. It was all defense for us, Conley said. The defense got the stops that we needed them to and we got out in transition to get some easy buckets. Chris Copeland came off the bench to score 16 points, while CJ Miles and Donald Sloan contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively, for Indiana, which opened the season with a 103-91 win over Philadelphia. We are playing hard, said Miles. We have a lot of new faces plus injuries so its going to take some time, but we will be all right. Indiana built its halftime lead to 13 when Roy Hibbert converted a bank shot, then Memphis embarked on a 26-2 run to take a 74-63 lead. Conley opened the surge with a pair of free throws and Randolph scored five straight points to cap it with 2:24 to go in the third. The Pacers made their first three shot attempts in the period, but they went 3-for-15 over the final nine minutes and committed six turnovers. Memphis led 78-67 heading into tthe fourth.dddddddddddd The Grizzlies margin was cut to eight with 4:12 to play, then Gasol made a tough hook shot and Conley followed with a wing 3-pointer to make it 93-80 just under a minute later. Earlier, Memphis held its opponent to 38.9 percent from the field and forced six turnovers over the first 12 minutes, but they managed to only lead 23-19 after the first quarter. Taipei, Taiwan (SportsNetwork.com) - Inbee Park shot 3-under 69 on Saturday and that helped her extend her lead to four strokes after three rounds of the Fubon LPGA Taiwan Championship. Park finished 54 holes at 21-under-par 195. After setting a new 36-hole hole scoring record, Park also smashed the tournaments 54-hole record. She had set the old mark of 198 in 2012. Overall, it was quite a good day. It was quite a different situation with the wind. It was playing a lot tougher, Park stated. The downwind holes, it was tough to stop the ball on the green. We have quite a few tough holes out there, but I think I managed myself quite good. Last Monday, Park displaced Stacy Lewis as the No. 1 player in the world rankings. Lewis started the day nine shots off the lead, but fired an 8-under 64 at Miramar Golf Country Club to trim her deficit to four strokes. Lewis shares second place with Shanshan Feng (70) at minus-17. Azahara Munoz carded a 3-under 69 and is alone in fourth place at 13-under-par 203. So Yeon Ryu (68) is one stroke back at minus-12. World No. 3 Lydia Ko (71) was joined in sixth place at 11-under-par 205 by Mariajo Uribe (67) and Brittany Lang (68). Park and Feng were in the final group together, while Lewis was two groups ahead of the leaders in round three. Park and Feng parred their first three holes before matching birdies at the fourth. After a par on No. 5, Park birdied the par-5 sixth to move to 20-under, where she was four clear of Feng and seven ahead of Lewis and Ko. Park stumbled to back-to-back bogeys at seven and eight to trim her lead to two. She bounced right back with a birdie on the ninth. Park made eagle at the par-5 12th to move four clear of Feng and eight ahead of Lewis. I think I played quite consistently with my ball-striking today. But I missed a couple of short putts today on Nos. 7 and 8, Park said. I missed those two. I also made some long putts, I holed some 20-, 25-foot putts. Feng, who had parred seven in a row from the fifth, birdied the 12th to move to minus-17. Park tripped to another bogey at 14, but she erased that mistake with a birdie at the 17th. She closed with a par at the last to lead by four. Feng traded a bogey for a birdie from the 17th to end four behind. Lewis did her scoring in bunches on Saturday. She opened with birdies at the first and second. After four straight pars, Lewis birdied the seventh and made it two in a row with a birdie on No. 8. After five more pars, Lewis caught fire down the stretch. She birdied four of the last five holes to soar into a share of second place. I kind of got things together there. Played really good. The wind started blowing on No. 7, and my caddie made a comment about it and I said good, that was my response, said Lewis. So I knew I needed some help with the weather to get a little bit closer and played some great golf there coming in. NOTES: Park owns the 54-hole lead for the 10th time in her LPGA Tour career ... She has won four of the previous nine, but lost the last two times she was in this position ... If Park or Lewis wins on Sunday, that player will be No. 1 in the world on Monday ... Two-time defending champion Suzann Pettersen stumbled to a 2-over 74 and dipped into a tie for 33rd at 5-under 211. Ian Thomas Jersey .500 ball against teams with winning records, so they needed a huge lift from somebody Tuesday night in a matchup of division leaders. The team sent out a press release on Friday stating Poile was resting and recovering and that he will remain in hospital for further observation. The Predators were preparing for the game against the Wild when Poile was hit by a puck that flew off the ice at him where he was standing in a tunnel behind the bench. The Montreal Canadiens follow Rene Bourques lead, Pavel Datsyuk makes the difference for the Red Wings and Ryan Getzlaf makes the difference for the Ducks. Scott Cullen looks at Friday nights NHL playoff games. HABS FOLLOW BOURQUE Canadiens LW Rene Bourque, who has scored 21 goals and 37 points in 128 regular season games for Montreal since arriving in a trade from Calgary, scored a pair of goals to pace the Montreal attack in a comfortable 4-1 win at Tampa Bay, giving the Habs a 2-0 series lead. Both of Bourques goals required significant individual effort, allowing him to remind people that hes a three-time 20-goal scorer -- that he had been known to finish on occasion before he joined the Canadiens. While Bourques contribution counts as something of a surprise, the Canadiens also took advantage of what was supposed to be their greatest advantage coming into the series: goaltending. Carey Price stopped 26 of 27 shots, his shutout broken with less than two minutes remaining on a Teddy Purcell power play goal. In Tampas net, Anders Lindback was yanked after allowing three goals on 23 shots, replaced by rookie Kristers Gudlevskis, who allowed one goal on three shots. Lightning coach Jon Cooper downplayed any goalending controversy but, as expected, the non-Ben Bishop options arent ideal for the Lightning. The unfortunate part for the Lightning is that they had a relatively strong possession game. Defencemen Mike Kostka and Eric Brewer, along with forwards J.T. Brown, Cedric Paquette and Nikita Kucherov all had a Corsi percentage of 66.7% or better, meaning that at least two of every three shot attempts were in the Lightnings favour with those players on the ice. The funny thing is that the Montreal line that was torched, possession wise, was Lars Eller, Brian Gionta and the aforementioned Rene Bourque. The Habs are up two games to none and going home, with the Lightning having a clear deficit in goal. Its a favourable situation for Montreal, but they cant get complacent. MAGIC ACT The top-seeded Boston Bruins were upset in Game One, as Detroits Pavel Datsyuk scored a spectacular goal with 3:01 remaining in the third period, to give the Red Wings a 1-0 win in the game and 1-0 lead in the series. While the Wings had every right to believe they could compete with Boston coming into the game, its one thing to believe it and another to carry 58% of the possession play on the road against the Presidents Trophy winners. The Bruins were missing defencemen Matt Bartkowski and Kevan Miller, which resulted in Corey Potter and Andrej Meszaros playing; both were break-even in possession terms. The real tough night for the Bruins came for the top line of Milan Lucic, David Krejci and Jarome Iginla. They were matched up against the Red Wings line of Riley Sheahan, Tomas Tatar and Gustav Nyquist, with Danny DeKeyser and Kyle Quincey on defence.dddddddddddd Sheahan had better than 70% Corsi% to lead all skaters. Even Bruins stalwart D Zdeno Chara had a 35.1% Corsi%; he had a Corsi% lower than that twice all season, both in games against the San Jose Sharks games this season. Chara spent his night matched against Datsyuk and the edge clearly went to Datsyuk. Naturally, in a 1-0 game, the goaltenders played well. While thats pretty standard for Vezina favourite Tuukka Rask in the Boston net, Detroits Jimmy Howard had an uneven season, but he allowed two goals in each of his last five starts, before opening the playoffs with a 25-save shutout. In 43 career playoff games, Howard has a .919 save percentage, which ranks seventh among active goaltenders (Rask, incidentally, ranks second). Detroit utilized their depth. Everyone in the lineup played at least 12 minutes -- Daniel Alfredsson, at 12:14, played the least for the Wings -- and, as a result, their top four defencemen were the only ones to play more than 20 minutes. It wasnt easy for the Wings, but their Game One performance showed a template for how they can push the Bruins in this series; use a disciplined, puck-control game and dont get caught up in Bostons aggressive physical game. DUCK AND COVER The Anaheim Ducks held on for a 3-2 win over the Dallas Stars, taking a 2-0 series lead. Ducks C Ryan Getzlaf, playing with facial protection after taking a Tyler Seguin slapshot in the cheek late in Game One, led the Ducks effort, scoring a goal and adding an assist. RW Corey Perry also scored for the Ducks and stands contrast to the performance of the Stars Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn, who have not had the same kind of impact. The games puck possession metrics were tilted dramatically by score effects, after the Ducks took a 3-1 lead, as Anaheim held a decided edge in score-close possession, but the Stars led in 5-on-5 possession numbers overall after outshooting the Ducks 15-2 in the third period. Ducks LW Matt Beleskey missed Game Two, with a lower-body injury, creating an opportunity for Devante Smith-Pelly to skate on the top line with Getzlaf and Perry. Stars LW Ryan Garbutt, who scored the Stars second goal, registered eight unblocked shot attempts in just 9:53 of ice time. In the end, Stars G Kari Lehtonen allowed three goals on 19 shots, while Ducks rookie G Frederik Andersen stopped 34 of 36. If the lower-seeded Stars are going to get back in the series, and harbour hopes for an upset, they need to win the goaltending battle and have Seguin and Benn contribute at a level closer to Getzlaf and Perry. Otherwise, the hill will be awfully steep. Scott Cullen can be reached at Scott.Cullen@bellmedia.ca and followed on Twitter at http://twitter.com/tsnscottcullen. GLEN COVE, N.Y. -- Canadian teen Brooke Mackenzie Henderson advanced to the U.S. Womens Amateur quarterfinals Thursday, winning two matches at Nassau Country Club. The 16-year-old Henderson, the low amateur in the U.S. Womens Open, beat Ember Schuldt of Sterling, Illinois 4 and 3 in the morning, and topped Dylan Kim of Plano, Texas, 3 and 2 in the third round. "It was a little up and down," said Henderson, second in the world amateur ranking. "We both werent playing great, but we sort of fought it out until the end." Henderson, from Smith Falls, Ontario, is trying to become the first Canadian winner since Cathy Sherk in 1978. Henderson will face Alison Lee of Valencia, California, on Friday. Lee edged Eimi Koga of Honolulu in 20 holes in the third round. In the other upper-bracket quarterfinal, Hannah OSullivan of Paradise Valley, Arizona, will play Grace Na of Alameda, California. In the third round, OSullivan edged Canadas Augusta James in 20 holes, and Na beat Lauren Kim of Los Altos, California, 2 up. In the lower bracket, Australias Su-Hyun Oh will play Kristen Gillman of Austin, Texas; and Andrea Lee of Hermosa Beach, California, will face South Koreas 14-year-old Eunjeong Seong. In the third round, Oh routed defending champion Emma Talley of Princeton, Kentucky, 9 and 8; Gillman beat Casey Danielson of Osceola, Wisconsin, 5 and 3; Andrea Lee topped Jessica Porvasnik of Hinckley, Ohio, 4 and 2; and Seong beat New Zealands Liv Cheng in 19 holes. "Emma didnt play her best, but she also had some really bad breaks in the middle," Oh said. "In the end, it all just went my way." Ohs margin was the biggest since 2005 when Angela Park beat Jennifer Ackerson, also 9 and 8. "Sometimes you run into someone thats playing really well," said Talley, the Alabama player who made the deciding putt in the Curtis Cup. "We started out basically the same. She just made her putts and I didnt." It was Rinnes second shutout of the season and the 34th of his career. His 15 wins lead the NHL.Early on, if it werent for him, we would have been in trouble, Nashville coach Peter Laviolette said. The first eight or nine minutes, I think everybody would admit we were not sharp. It was a really strong effort by him.Viktor Fasth had 24 saves for Edmonton, which fell to 0-11-2 against Western Conference teams. We havent been able to take many positives lately, where at the start of the season, we felt good about the way we played even though maybe we came out on the short end of the stick, Oilers coach Dallas Eakins said. This one for the group was a step forward even though we couldnt get both the points.Seconds after Forsberg hit the crossbar with a shot and Nashville defenceman Roman Josi hit the post, Forsberg spun to free himself from a defender and beat Fasth with a wrist shot from the left circle. It was a really long shift, actually. I was pretty tired when I got the last shot there, so I was just trying to spin off the guy and try to hit the net, Forsberg said. I was fortunate thhat it went in.ddddddddddddhe rookies 10 goals lead the team.Rinnes best save came 13 seconds into overtime when he denied Eberles penalty shot after Predators captain Shea Weber was called for closing his hand on the puck while it was in the crease. Rinne made the ensuing stop on Eberle with his left skate against the post.He is really nifty in penalty shots. I think that he is one of the better shooters stats-wise in the NHL in penalty shots and shootouts, Rinne said. I thought he got a little bit too close to me and I was able to get my leg over there and he didnt put it over my leg.Eberle thought he had Rinne beat.I just had to get it upstairs, Eberle said. I think when you go down that way, its extremely tough and you feel like you let your teammates down. The Predators finished 0 for 5 on the power play. They are an NHL-worst 1 for 37 at home this season with the man advantage.Nashville centre Mike Fisher appeared in his first game of the season. Fisher sustained an Achilles tendon injury while training over the summer and missed the first 21 games.Oilers forward Matt Hendricks was injured at 2:12 of the first period when he blocked a shot from Weber. The shot hit Hendricks in the left leg. After the game, Eakins said X-rays were negative, but Hendricks inability to bend his knee kept him from returning to the ice.NOTES: Oilers D Justin Schultz was a healthy scratch for the first time this season. ... MIAMI -- Chicago Cubs pitcher Travis Wood delivered a victory from the mound on Sunday. A day later, he did the same from the batters box. The pinch-hitting pitcher had an RBI double with two outs in the 13th inning, giving the Chicago Cubs a 5-4 victory over the Miami Marlins. "I knew I was coming up that inning, so I had been stretched out, swinging down in the tunnel," Wood said. "I came up, luckily Junior got on and I was able to hit it down the line and put us up." Called on to bat for reliever Carlos Villanueva (3-5), Wood hit a sharp groundball off Jacob Turner (2-5) down the left field line, scoring Junior Lake for the go-ahead run. Wood was pressed into action as available players dwindled. Cubs manager Rick Renteria used lefties Chris Coghlan and Nate Schierholtz in the seventh and 10th innings, respectively. By the 13th, the Cubs had gone through seven pitchers and all batters but righty Eli Whiteside. "(Whiteside) was my last guy, then if we get beyond and I use Russ (James Russell), I need somebody to pitch and I still need another body," Renteria said. "The way (Wood) handles the bat, he gave us, he gave himself a chance in that at bat." Wood, who is hitting .250 this season, was 0 for 4 as a pinch hitter entering the game. "I always hit growing up, out of high school," Wood said. "I didnt have 3, 4 year of not hitting. So I kind of just stuck with it and its part of my job as a starting pitcher in the National League, so I practice at it and try to do the best I can." Miamis Tom Koehler was near perfect to start, retiring 14 of the first 15 batters. Only Mike Olt registered a hit against the Marlins starter during that stretch. But the Cubs overcame a 3-0 deficit in the sixth inning, highlighted by Starlin Castros three-run homer. After the Marlins were unable to turn a double play on pitcher Justin Hammels bunt, Luis Valbuena and Justin Ruggiano followed with singles. Hammel ended Koehlers shutout when he scored on a groundout by Anthony Rizzo. Castro then gave Chicago a 4-3 lead with a three-run homer, his 10th of the season. "Other than the curveball that I hung there, they did a good job of hitting some quality pitches," Koehler said. "Unfortunately, in this game the results dont always mirror the quality of the outing. I do feel like I let the guys down when we had that three-run lead going into the inning." Koehler, who gave up five hits and struck out five, failed to get beyond the sixth inning for the third time in his last four starts. "Tom is having a tough time getting through that sixth inning," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "He was breezing. Hes got to fight through that to win games at this level." The Marlins responded in the bottom half of the sixth. Marcell Ozuna led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Adeiny Hechavarria. Hammel allowed four runs and eight hits. He struck out nine in six innings. Giancarlo Stanton put the Marlins on the board in the first inning with his 19th home run, a two-run line drive that just cleared the right field wall. "I could not get the slider down and that was the ball that Stanton hit," Hammel said. "Ive never seen a home run like that. I think it took two seconds to get out of the ballpark. I thought it was going to be a foul ball and hitting the base of the wall or something. Thats impressive." Miami padded its lead in the third when Stanton scored on Casey McGehees single to right. The Marlins failed to convert with the bases loaded in the seventh. Garrett Jones grounded into a forceout at home and Ozuna struck out looking. NOTES: The Marlins observed a moment of silence for Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, who died Monday. ... The Cubs improved to 3-6 in extra inning games this season. The Marlins fell to 4-6. ... Castro registered his 11th three-hit game and now shares the major league lead in the category with Colorados Troy Tulowitzki. With his home run in the sixth, Castro picked up his eighth extra-base hit in his last 10 games. ... The Cubs intentionally walked Stanton in the 11th inning, giving the Marlins slugger 14 intentional passes this season. Stanton trails only Bostons David Ortiz (15) in intentional walks. ... Jake Marisnick and Justin Bour, both recalled from Triple-A New Orleans, saw action in Mondays game. Marisnick batted leadoff in place of the injured OF Christian Yelich and finished 2 for 6 with run, a walk and two stolen bases. "Listen, I get compensated very well. I dont take that for granted for one second," Brees said Monday, referring to the five-year, $100 million deal he signed in 2012. "But I play this game because I love this game, I love this locker room and I love the opportunity to win a championship. "If they want to come to me and extend me even further, thatd be great," Brees said. "Whatever helps this team win and puts the best team on the field." With Sean Payton returning from his bounty suspension, the Saints improved their regular-season record from 7-9 to 11-5, then won the franchises first road playoff game in six tries, beating the Eagles in Philadelphia in the wild card round before falling at top-seeded Seattle, 23-15 on Saturday. Brees eclipsed 5,000 yards passing for a third straight season to go with 39 touchdowns. Meanwhile, New Orleans defence went from worst in the league a year ago to fourth in total defence under first-year co-ordinator Rob Ryan. And that improvement came despite a rash of injuries. All in all, it looks as if the Saints arent far off from Super Bowl contention — if they can find the salary cap space to keep some top free agents such as tight end Jimmy Graham, who led New Orleans with 1,215 yards receiving and 16 touchdowns. Brees contract calls for him to have a base salary of $10.75 million next season, which along with his pro-rated $37 million signing bonus will put his 2014 salary cap figure above $18 million. Graham has said his preference would be to remain with Brees in New Orleans. The Saints can secure Graham for at least another year by placing the franchise tag on the four-year veteran, but players and teams generally prefer to avoid that route and seek long-term extensions instead. Other starters entering free agency include free safety Malcolm Jenkins, right tackle Zach Strief and centre Brian de la Puente. Strief, who has spent his entire eight-year career in New Orleans, said he wants to be back, but would clean his locker out entirely for the first time, knowing the Saints might not match other offers in what he views as his last, best chance to sign a new contract.dddddddddddd "Obviously this organizations been a big part of my life and I feel like Ive been part of the success here and you dont want to leave that," Strief said. "The reality of the situation is I think theres going to be other possible outcomes, and theres other teams, possibly, and you prepare for that — not because its what you want but because its the reality." Jenkins, a five-year veteran, said he, too, wants to return, but understands "it doesnt always work out that way." Still, he emphasized he was proud to be part of a defence that made enormous progress this season. "Theres not a group of guys that Id rather play with," Jenkins said. "Weve come a long way, obviously night and day from last year." One problem for New Orleans is that its existing contracts would likely place the club more than $10 million above the 2014 salary cap, which has not yet been set, but is expected to be in the range of $125 million. One way teams seek salary cap relief is by renegotiating with, or releasing, veteran players with the largest base salaries. In New Orleans case, those players could include outside linebacker Will Smith, left guard Ben Grubbs, cornerback Jabari Greer, defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley, safety Roman Harper and receiver Lance Moore. Smith spent the season on injured reserve after tearing a knee ligament in the preseason. Greer had season-ending torn ligaments in his knee in November. Yet the injuries also provided opportunities for younger players, many of whom demonstrated significant growth and will remain under contracts less burdensome to the club. Those included rookie left tackle Terron Armstead, who took over as starter in Week 16, second-year defensive end Akiem Hicks, fourth-year outside linebacker Junior Galette, as well as rookie receiver Kenny Stills and rookie running back Khiry Robinson. Payton refused to address potential personnel moves, but confidently brushed aside questions about New Orleans impending salary cap constraints. "Were going to be in good shape," Payton said. "Obviously when theres change from season to season, theres attrition. Theres the younger players that are coming in and the players eventually that have been here that are no longer on the team. I think thats pretty normal, and well be ready for the challenge." NEW YORK -- Jaromir Jagr of the New Jersey Devils, Manny Malhotra of the Carolina Hurricanes and Dominic Moore of the New York Rangers are the finalists for the NHLs Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. The league awards the trophy annually to "the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey." Jagr, a Hart Trophy winner back in 1999, had another strong season with New Jersey at the age of 42. The Devils named the right-winger as the team MVP in 2013-14 after he led the club in assists (43), points (67), plus-minus (plus-16), game-winning goals (six) and shots (231). Malhotra, 33, was the Vancouver Canucks Masterton nominee in 2011-12 after returning from a serious eye injury. Refusing to believe his NHL career was over last fall, Malhotra signed a professional tryout agreement with the Charlotte Checkers, Carolinas American Hockey League affiliate, on Oct. 3 and signed as a free agent with the Hurricanes four weeks later. He appeared in 69 regular-season games, assumed a leadership role as an alternate captain and ranked second among all NHL players in face-off percentage (59.4 per cent). Moore, 33, returned to the NHL this season after taking a leave of absence in the spring of 2012 in order to care for his wife, Katie, after she had been diagnosed with a rare form of liver cancer. Katie passed away at the age of 32 in January of 2013. Moore established a charity in her name, and resumed his career as an integral part of a Rangers team that earned 96 points and a second-place finish in the Metropolitan Division. The defending Stanley Cup champions drew first blood in the opener of this best-of-seven set, downing the visiting Kings by a 3-1 score on Sunday. Los Angeles hopes for a better result on Wednesday, as it aims to avoid its second straight series loss to the Blackhawks in the conference finals. The Kings fell behind 2-0 on the road in last springs encounter, and only won Game 3 on home ice before falling to Chicago in five games. Sundays opener marked the first time two teams met in the Western finals in back-to-back years since the Stars/Avalanche in 1999-2000. Picking up wins in Chicago has not been easy for the Kings or anybody else. The Blackhawks have claimed six straight home games against L.A. in the regular season and playoffs combined and are 7-0 as the host in this postseason. Chicago is 18-2 in its past 20 home playoff games, and according to Elias Sports Bureau, the Blackhawks are the first NHL team to win 18 of 20 home postseason games since Edmonton did the same from April 7, 1988-May 2, 1990. Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw, who hasnt played since Game 1 of the second round due to a lower-body injury, will not play tonight. He wanted to play, but coach Joel Quenneville said they will wait until Game 3 on Saturday. Of course, the Kings are no stranger to coming from behind in a playoff series this spring. L.A. became the fourth team in league history to rally from a 3-0 deficit when it won the final four games against San Jose in Round 1 and came back from down 3-2 to beat the Anaheim Ducks in the conference semifinals. Duncan Keith registered the winner late in the second period Sunday and Corey Crawford stopped 25 pucks to help Chicago earn the 1-0 series lead. Brandon Saad and Jonathan Toews added tallies for the Blackhawks, while Marian Hossa contributed a pair of assists. &"I thought we had a good first five minutes, but it was even the rest of the way.dddddddddddd Every shift is going to be important," said Chicago head coach Joel Quenneville. Tyler Toffoli provided the sole offense and Jonathan Quick made just 17 saves for the Kings, who were playing Sunday just two days after posting a Game 7 road win in Anaheim. "We had a chance," Kings forward Mike Richards said. "We shot ourselves in the foot a bit on their goals. Give them credit, theyre an opportunistic team. We made a couple mistakes and they ended up in our net." Los Angeles, which has played 15 postseason games thus far, had an extra day to regroup for this evenings Game 2. "Only time I really noticed it quite honest was early in the game," Kings head coach Darryl Sutter said when asked if fatigue was a factor in Game 1. "They were going to come out with some energy, they did two or three times in the first where we got caught at the end of shifts. Thats where it showed up. Other than that, I dont think it really hurt us that much." The clubs will get two more days of rest after tonights battle, as Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday in Los Angeles. Kings forward Anze Kopitar was held without a point for only the second time in these playoffs on Sunday. He is leading all players in the postseason with 19 points on five goals and 14 assists. "Theyre a good team obviously," Kopitar said after Game 1, "I think right down the lineup theyre pretty solid, obviously. Were going to have to do a better job of checking, of not giving up timely goals and score a few more ourselves." The Kings welcomed back defenseman Willie Mitchell, who had been sidelined since Game 6 of the first round with a lower-body injury suspected to be a leg issue. L.A. is still without defenseman Robyn Regehr, who has been out since suffering a lower-body injury in Game 1 of the conference semis against Anaheim. Regehr has not resumed skating and there is no timetable for his return to game action. Every night of the Stanley Cup playoffs, TSN hockey analyst and former NHL goaltender Jamie McLennan breaks down each goalies performance. Jamies number grades given are out of five, with five being the best mark. Marc-Andre Fleury, Pittsburgh Penguins (5) – He was locked in all night, made huge stops on Benoit Pouliot, Raphael Diaz, Ryan Mcdonagh, Carl Hagelin, Rick Nash (twice) but none better than the three saves on Mats Zuccarello. Battled some rebounds around the net, but made up for it with great positioning and efficiency in the net. Got a little help with three posts but like any streak, you get the bounces that go your way. He looked very calm and not overactive in his movements. Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers (3) - No run support or help most of the night. The Sidney Crosby goal was a great hesitation - roll of wrist move that got him to open up and he slid it through the five- hole, - not Henriks best work. Has faced five breakaways in the last two games, the Rangers are giving up too many high quality chances to the Pens. Jonathan Quick, Los Angeles Kings (5) - Unbelievable early on, big saves on the PK on Saku Koivu, Devante Smith-Pelly, Ryan Getzlaf and Patrick Maroon. Showed his agility again by his explosive movement in the second period on Perry, held it up in the 3rd, with good down low work again on Perry. Looks unbeatable some nights, and Anaheim tried to get to him with traffic, he fought through it all night. Jonas Hiller, Anaheim Ducks (3) - Beat glove side on the first two goals, one early on Marian Gaborik, and the Alec Martinez goal hits Jakob Silfverberg, but he moves out of the way of it. Good saves on Anze Kopitar, Gaborik,Mike Richards and Tanner Pearson. Not tested much in the third. Not the problem but has not been the solution for the Ducks as well. Virgil Green Jersey . The 19-year-old from Westmount, Que., was edged 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-3 by third-seeded Alize Cornet of France. Graves is keen to avoid a repeat of Durhams bail-out in October, which saw them relegated from Division One of the County Championship, docked 48 points and stripped of Test status after overextending themselves financially. The 68-year-old is looking to scrap the system that pits county against county in a bidding war to host Test matches and instead come up with a system which safeguards their futures. He told the Daily Telegraph: I want to change the process so the risk is taken away from the grounds and that risk is shared by the ECB going forward.I want to do it on a different basis to make sure everybody is treated the same.Look at the way we are now. Nottinghamshire this year are going to lose over £1m because they have not had a Test match. That is not fair. ECB chairman Colin Graves is keen on a new Twenty20 competition Graves also confirmed that a new Twenty20 league is being discussed, with more details expected on that in April 2017.He believes change has to happen and added: We can sit here and leave everything as it is and say its hunky-dory in the garden but it is not.If you look at participation numbers, they are dropping like a stone. If you look at the audience that is watching, we are not attracting new fans. The new competition will be introduced to attract women, kids and new people to the game based around cricket and entertainment. It will not be based around drinking beer on a Friday night.Upgrade to Sky Sports now to watch Man Utd v Arsenal this Saturday and get the first six months half price!
