TSN.ca has unveiled its initial list of free agents and the talent available would have any general manager with cap space salivating. The list of course, will look a lot less robust once all the re-signings are final and the franchise tags are handed out. Names like TJ Ward and Jairus Byrd arent likely to ever see the open market. And Jimmy Graham, he isnt going anywhere. Still there are several names that will become available to the highest bidder come March 11. Receivers like Eric Decker, Hakeem Nicks, and Anquan Boldin, pass rushers like Greg Hardy, Michael Bennett, and Jared Allen, and cornerbacks like Alterraun Verner and Brent Grimes could find themselves in different jerseys soon after the deadline opens. LOUIS -- The St.Almost 13 years ago, the Sandra Schmirler Foundation was created by a group of the late curlers friends with the support of the Canadian Curling Association and Scott Paper. The idea came about just over three years after Schmirler was standing on the podium in Nagano 1998, signing our national anthem after capturing the Olympic gold medal in womens curling. Unfortunately, it was also just 14 months after she passed away from a rare form of cancer at the young age of 36. Much like the success Schmirler enjoyed on the ice, the foundation started in her name has been a winner at providing hospitals with funding for the care of premature and critically ill newborn babies across Canada. Despite all the big curling shots she made over the years, including the famous in-off at the 1997 Olympic Trials, Schmirler said giving birth to her only daughter at the time was her best delivery. It was clear that Schmirler never lost sight of what was important in life, which makes her name a perfect fit for the foundation, which bears the slogan Champions start small.dddddddddddd Currently, over 30 hospitals benefit as a result of funding from the foundation and last year, almost $300,000 was made available to those hospitals through grants. And over the 13 years the foundation has been in existence, almost $2.5 million has been allocated to 34 different hospitals Also, six junior curlers received $5,000 each in the first annual Spirit of Sandra Scholarships last year, including Kristin Streifel, who skipped Schmirlers home province of Saskatchewan in this years Canadian Junior Curling Championships in Nova Scotia. Sunday is Sandra Schmirler Day at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Montreal and TSNs Vic Rauter will be hosting the annual telethon for the foundation. Keenum will make his first appearance in a regular-season game against the rugged defence of the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, where the fans just set a Guinness record as the noisiest outdoor stadium in the world.TORONTO -- Dylan Moscovitch arrived in Detroit last summer for a two-day tryout with Russian pairs skater Lubov Iliushechkina. Two days quickly turned into six weeks. The tryout was so good we cancelled our flights home, Moscovitch said. Moscovitch had just split with Kirsten Moore-Towers, with whom he finished fifth at the Sochi Olympics, and was searching for a new partner. Fast forward five months and Moscovitch and Iliushechkina will make their competitive debut this week at the Warsaw Cup in Poland. Its been a lot of fun, and an interesting process in terms of all the extra stuff weve had to figure out in terms of immigration and her release from Russia and all of that, but the skatings been great, Moscovitch said. Im really enjoying skating with Lubov, shes an excellent partner, and were learning a lot from each others different styles of skating. Moscovitch and Moore-Towers announced the split last spring after five seasons together that included two fourth-place finishes at the world championships. Moore-Towers said she wanted to compete for three more Olympics. Moscovitch couldnt commit to that, but wasnt ready to leave the sport. I wasnt done. I wanted to go another four years, he said. And the situation kind of left me spinning a little bit. I wasnt exactly sure what my options were, where to turn, I turned 30 in September, and its hard to start over. I didnt really think I wanted to start with someone who hadnt done pairs, and so I wasnt really sure what my options were. He decided he wouldnt retire before at least trying out other partners, and approached Iliushechkina on Facebook. She won gold at the 2009 world junior championships and then gold at Skate Canada International a year later with Nodari Maisuradze. That partnership ended in 2012. Shed been frozen out since then as the Russian federation refused permission to switch allegiance to compete for France with Yannick Kocon. The Russian federration finally gave Iliushechkina a release to compete with Moscovitch, announcing the decision last month.dddddddddddd The two had been training together, hoping for the release, since that tryout in mid-May. They trained alone in Detroit, because Iliushechkina had a U.S. visa, for six weeks. When the 23-year-old obtained a Canadian visa, they moved to Toronto, where theyre coached by Lee Barkell, Bryce Davison and Tracy Wilson. While Moore-Towers and her new partner Michael Marinaro competed at Skate Canada and will compete this week at the Trophee Eric Bompard in Bordeaux, France, the Russian release came too late for Moscovitch and Iliushechkina to compete on the Grand Prix circuit. Theyll compete at the national championships in January and if they finish in the top three, will represent Canada at the world championships. Iliushechkina will have to obtain Canadian citizenship before they can compete at an Olympics, but changing allegiances is fairly common in the sport. Ice dancers Kaitlyn Weaver and Piper Gilles are both Americans who received Canadian citizenship to compete with Canadian partners. We started the immigration process, Moscovitch said. Weve got a bit of time and have some people working on it with us, so we have positive feelings about it. The veteran pairs skater is happy to have a fresh start with Iliushechkina. The best thing about it is everything is new. I dont feel like Ive just taken what I had before and moved it over to a new partner, Moscovitch said. Its a new look. Ive learned new lifts, Ive learned different things with Lubov. Shes very flexible which enables us to do some pretty interesting lift positions, and different entrances, and shes very creative, so Ive learned a lot in that way. Hopefully just being in a different environment and having different coaches look at my skating, I feel like my overall skating skills have changed a little bit, in matching her skating. NEW YORK -- The next phase in New York Mets ace Matt Harveys rehabilitation from elbow reconstruction surgery is being pushed back, and the All-Star right-hander is becoming more realistic about his chances of pitching in the major leagues this year. Harvey was supposed to throw off a slope for the first time Tuesday but he was told last week while working out at the Mets complex in Port St. Lucie, Florida, that the plan was being scrapped. "A little surprised," Harvey said before the Mets played the Milwaukee Brewers. "We kind of had that plan written up for quite some time and to hear four or five days before Im making a milestone is a little disappointing." New York general manager Sandy Alderson said there is nothing wrong with Harvey. In fact the 25-year-olds recovery might have been going too well. "I think the realization that as we transition from long tossing to throwing off a slope that we were moving sort of inexorably to a conclusion that we wanted to avoid, which is pitching too soon," Alderson said. "After talking with our doctors it made sense to slow him down a little bit." In a season in which Tommy John surgery has become a near epidemic -- 22 pitchers had the operation so far, according to data provided from STATS via writer Jon Roegele -- the Mets are basing their timetable for Harveys return on a growing amount of data that shows pitchers have more success if they dont return before 11 months from the date of surgery. Harvey had his operation on Oct. 22. "Thats about the last week in September," Alderson said of the target date. "Thats a very narrow window to try to hit from our standpoint." Manager Terry Collins, who was given a vote of confidence from Alderson with the Mets on a six-game skid, said he wouldnt expect Harvey to pitch for New York in the final week of the season unless the team was in contention. Harvey had been set on returning this season but understands the decision is out of his hands. "I think Im coming to realize that I cant write myself in the lineup is becoming more realistic," Harvey said. "Im the one throwing the baseball. I havent had one pinch of pain. I can only express how good I feel and how ready I personally feel." Harvey will continue to long toss from 120 feet -- sometimes 150 -- and throw off flat ground for the time being. Alderson said a new plan has not yet been finalized. Alderson, meanwhile, met with Collins after the team returned from an 11-game road trip a season-high seven games under .500 at 28-35 because he felt there was too much talk about Collins status in the media. "Every time we lose a few games in a row, theres speculation about somebody taking a fall and thats simply not the way to approach a long season," Alderson said. Martavis Bryant Raiders Jersey . Making his third start since replacing Tim Lincecum in the rotation, Petit (5-3) faced just two more than the minimum and matched his season high of nine strikeouts. The right-hander needed only 84 pitches to finish the gem, the fewest in a nine-inning complete game by any pitcher in the majors this season. Petit, who threw 26 first-pitch strikes, came within one out of a perfect game against the Diamondbacks on Sept. 6, 2013. Leadoff hitter Angel Pagan had four hits and scored twice. Joe Panik went 5 for 5 and Gregor Blanco added two singles to help San Francisco win its seventh straight home game. Overall, the Giants have won 10 of 13. Ender Inciarte homered leading off the fourth to end Arizonas seven-game homerless drought, but manager Kirk Gibsons club managed only three hits the rest of the way. The Diamondbacks have lost four straight. The Giants stranded seven runners in the first three innings but took advantage of control problems by starter Wade Miley (7-11) Andrew Susac drew a bases-loaded walk in the first inning and Pablo Sandoval did the same thing in the second. Pagan scored both times. Buster Posey also drove in a run in the second when Diamondbacks first baseman Mark Trumbo couldnt handle a bounced throw from shortstop Didi Grregorius, who was trying to complete a double play.dddddddddddd. Miley, winless since July 30, gave up three runs and five hits in two innings. He walked four and struck out one. Gregor Blanco singled and scored on an error by Inciarte in left field. Posey added a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0. Petit did the rest in his best start since his near-miss against Arizona a year ago. He retired his first nine hitters — five by strikeout — before Inciarte went deep. The ball landed in McCovey Cove, the 101st splash hit since AT&T Park opened in 2000. Petit also singled in the second — his first hit of the season — and scored on Poseys grounder. SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Lee Nguyen scored in the 93rd minute, and the New England Revolution beat the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 on Saturday night for their first win of the season. Nguyen raced to Scott Caldwells long pass down the left wing, and then cut inside before deking San Jose defender Clarence Goodson and beating goalkeeper Jon Busch for the winning score for New England (1-2-1). The Revolution ended a 305-minute scoring drought to start the season when San Jose defender Victor Bernardez knocked the ball into the Earthquakes net while trying to make a last-ditch clearance. Chris Wondolowski had a second-half equalizer for the Earthquakes, who hadnt lost at Buck Shaw Stadium since March 3, 2013. The loss ends an unbeaten string of 21 home matches in all competitions for San Jose. The Revolutions first goal ended a bizarre sequence that began with New England midfielder Diego Fagundez playing a pass over the top toward forward Saer Sene. San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch charged off his line, but left back Jordan Stewart reached the ball first and his attempted clearance pushed it out of Buschs reach. Bernardez attempted a right-footed save inside the 6-yard box, but he inadvertently kicked his left foot instead and whiffed on the ball. The Quakes held roughly 80 per cent of possession for the first 10 minutes of the first half and continued to build pressure in the second half. Wondolowski finally made that work pay off in the 69th minute when he collected a deflected cross and cut a tightly angled shot across the face of goal from 4 yards, tucking it neatly inside the far post. Goodson delivered a critical block on Nguyens open shot in the 80th minute. Terrell Owens Jersey . -- Kael Mouillierat scored three times and set up one more as the St. Dalton Schultz Jersey . The Gatineau Olympiques head coach will lead Canada in its quest to end its gold medal drought at the 2015 world junior hockey championship held in Montreal and Toronto at the end of this year.As 2013 winds to a close, TSN.ca looks back at the stories and moments that made the year memorable. TSN.cas writing staff reflects on the best hockey moments from the past 12 months including Alfie going to Detroit, Ovi finding another gear, Patrick Roy losing his cool and more. Daniel Alfredssons Motown Revue By: Shane McNeil Hockey fans had seen it before. The hero leaves the city where hes enjoyed years, sometimes decades of memories and successes in search of one or two years worth of hunting down a Championship ring. Ray Bourque, Mats Sundin, Jarome Iginla - It happens. Its no slight on the player and more often than not, the organization and the fans do nothing but wish them the best. But, Daniel Alfredsson? Did anyone see that coming? Here is the man that took a pay cut to keep the team afloat amidst bankruptcy. Alfie is a man who ascended to nearly religious standards in the Nations Capital after years of battling the Toronto Maple Leafs and getting the team to its only Stanley Cup Final. In the days (hours?) that followed Alfredssons signing in Motown, the Senators brass tried to foist the breakdown on their long-time captain and his agent J.P. Barry. The lines of communication, they believed, went silent at the most crucial time. Alfredssons decision to sign in Detroit appeared to be based on a player not being willing to settle for another discount deal. But whats more surprising than Alfredsson leaving Ottawa is that the Senators let it happen. Ovechkin makes fast work post-lockout By: Ken Rodney Nobody embodied the sprint mentality of the lockout-shortened 2012-13 NHL regular season quite like the Washington Capitals and more specifically their superstar Alexander Ovechkin. After not scoring in the first four games of the season, Ovechkin finished the first month of the schedule with only two goals and in those seven games, his team had only managed to pick up three points. However as their captain and leader caught fire so did the team Capitals, who rely on him for both an offensive and emotional boost. When the dust settled at the end of the 48 game regular season, Ovechkin had 32 goals, including 24 in the final 23 games and the Capitals had captured the Southeast Division and were the third seed heading into the playoffs. The Moscow native won the scoring race by three goals to earn his third Maurice Richard Trophy as the leagues top goal scorer, the only player to win as many since it was first awarded in 1998. Proving three is a charm for the man they call The Great Eight, he was also awarded with his third Hart Trophy as league MVP for his spectacular season. Patrick Roy blows up on his first night as Avalanche head coach By: Ryan Horne It didnt take long for Patrick Roy to make his mark as an NHL head coach. In fact, it only took one game. Roys Colorado Avalanche were pummeling the visiting Anaheim Ducks on the inaugural night of the regular season. When the first-year coach witnessed what he viewed as a cheap shot against his star rookie Nathan MacKinnon, he didnt hold back. Roy cursed and hollered at Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau and even pushed the plexiglass separating the two teams, almost knocking it down. He was hit with a game misconduct and fined $10, 000 for the incident. Not bad for your first night as a professional bench boss. A lot of people speculated this could happen with the fiery former goalie, but probably not this quickly. Regardless, the Avalanche players seem to be cool with it as they hold one of the better records in the Western Conference after being forecast as a non-playoff team before the season. Its yet to be seen whether Roys actions will get him into any further trouble, but theres a good chance hes not going to change for anybody. If the Quebec City native feels a certain way, he has no problem with expressing it. Just ask Ronald Corey. Martin St. Louis: One for the Ages By: Mike Beauvais There are a lot of things Martiin St.dddddddddddd. Louis probably shouldnt have been. Undrafted, the diminutive native of Laval, Quebecs stay in the NHL probably shouldnt have lasted for much longer than the cup of coffee he had with the Calgary Flames in the late 90s. Conventional wisdom also didnt see St. Louis developing into the offensive juggernaut, six-time All-Star, Hart Trophy-winning, Stanley Cup champion that St. Louis blossomed into while a member of the Lightning. With the list of things Martin St. Louis probably shouldnt have been already lengthy, he added yet another to the list in 2013. Alongside young sniper Steven Stamkos, the 37-year-old St. Louis was the Batman to his Robin in 2013. The cagey veteran partnered with the Boy Wonder. The NHL was their Gotham City in 2013 and they were the premier Dynamic Duo of offence. In the Lightnings April 27 season-ending 5-3 win over the Florida Panthers, St. Louis had a goal and assist to bring him to the 60-point plateau in the shortened 48-game season. That was three points more than Stamkos haul for the year and the most in the NHL, handing St. Louis his second Art Ross Trophy. When he did it before in 2003-2004, it was improbable, but when he did it again in 2013, he did it as the oldest player in NHL history. There are a lot of things Martin St. Louis probably shouldnt have been, but it should surprise nobody at all when he decides to add something else to that list. The Lockout ends, the fans flock back By: Barry Riz The NHLs arenas were empty. The lockout had dragged on some 100 days. The first week of 2013 saw some headway in negotiations but no deal yet. As fans described it, billionaire owners and millionaire players just couldnt figure out how to divide up $3.3 billion in revenue. And the fans had seen more than enough through a battle that dragged on through the fall and early winter. Fans were going to protest by returning season tickets. They were going to boycott games if any were ever played. They were going to stop buying NHL-branded merchandise. They were going to stop watching on television. But things turned quickly in the early days of 2013. A deal was struck Jan. 6, and after a speedy training camp the season opened Jan. 19. And the fans came back. Oh, did they ever. League attendance and TV numbers returned stronger than before. The 48-game season was fast-paced and quickly consumed, with a Bruins-Blackhawks Stanley Cup Final topping off the leagues return. Forgiven? Probably not. Forgotten, absolutely. And as someone tweeted on opening night: "Somewhere Gary Bettman is watching all this hoopla and making a note to himself, and is putting it in a file marked "NHL LOCKOUT 2020." MacKinnon lights it up at Memorial Cup, locks in at first overall By: Ryan Horne Saying Nathan MacKinnon earned the right to be drafted first overall in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft would be an understatement. In the finals of the Memorial Cup against Seth Jones, the other first overall hopeful, and the Portland Winterhawks, MacKinnon netted a hat-trick, added a couple assists and helped the Halifax Mooseheads win their first national championship in team history. He was named tournament MVP, scoring seven goals and six assists in just four games after a spectacular regular season tallying 75 points in 44 games. Going into the tournament, many thought the smooth skating Jones would be the man the Colorado Avalanche would end up taking with their No.1 selection, especially considering their lack of depth on defence. But on June 24, 2013, Joe Sakic stepped up to the podium in New Jersey and took the 18-year-old from Halifax. And with MacKinnons stellar play at both the Memorial Cup and in the QMJHL, you cant blame them. Jones, on the other hand, fell to the Nashville Predators at number four. Both are having solid rookie seasons, but it will be interesting to see if Colorado still likes their decision a few years down the road. Nick Hundley homered, Chris Davis had a two-run double and Adam Jones and Delmon Young also drove in runs for the Orioles. Tillman (10-5) matched a career high with nine strikeouts, giving up one run and three hits. He won for the third time this month as Baltimore improved to 38-26 away from Camden Yards. The homer was Abreus first of the month. Jose Quintana (6-10) lost his third straight start, allowing four runs and eight hits in six innings. Madrid, Spain (SportsNetwork.com) - Real Madrid is will be shorthanded when the club welcomes Real Sociedad to the Bernabeu on Saturday. Cristiano Ronaldo will begin his two-match ban for committing acts of violent conduct in Real Madrids 2-1 defeat of Cordoba last time out. The reigning Ballon dOr winner has been in fine form in recent weeks, but Real Madrids star-studded squad makes the team an instant favorite regardless of the opposition. Gareth Bale, who nabbed the winning goal in Madrids win over Cordoba, will be asked to shoulder the bulk of the offensive responsibilities. Karim Benzema, meanwhile, will be aiming to find the back of the net for just the second time in the clubs last six outings across all competitions. Real Sociedad will be tasked with slowing down La Ligas top side, but the club also needs to focus on its own form. La Real has been quite inconsistent in recent few months, producing a 4-5-5 record over its last 14 league contests. One victory from that run did come against Barcelona, though, so David Moyes will hope to lead his team to another major scalp on Saturday. Barcelona has gone on a three-game winning run since falling to Sociedad at the Anoeta, as well as dispatching of Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey. The Catalans will return to La Liga action on Sunday with a home clash against a Villarreal side that enters the weekend on a 10-game unbeaten streak. Third-place Atletico Madrid will hope to bounce back from its cup exit on Saturday when the club heads to Eibar. Also on Saturday, Granada and Elche will meet in a relegation six-pointer and Celta Vigo will hope to snap a run of one point from nine matches when the club welcomes Cordoba to the Estadio Municipal de Balaidos. LONDON, Ont. -- The London Knights elimination from their third straight Memorial Cup stung because it was their earliest exit of the three. The host team of the 2014 MasterCard Memorial Cup was a true contender among the four teams in it. With seven Knights forwards who helped the Knights win the last two Ontario Hockey League championships and with a team that scored over 300 goals this season, London was a threat to win the Cup on their third try in as many years. But the hosts were eliminated by the Guelph Storm in a 7-2 loss Wednesday. The Knights went 0-3 through the preliminary round and needed a win against their OHL rival to get into a tiebreaker game. "We thought for sure wed have a better chance of winning it this year," Knights forward Josh Anderson said. "We didnt have the bounces we wanted. Its too bad it had to end this way. "We wanted to have the Memorial Cup championship. I thought our organization really deserved one after the hard work weve been putting through these past three years. Looking at it now, Im glad I got the opportunity to come here and play for the London Knights." The Knights lost the 2012 final 2-1 in overtime to the host Shawinigan Cataractes. They fell in last years semifinal to the Portland Winterhawks in Saskatoon. The Storm were the first team since the Windsor Spitfires in 2010 to go 3-0 through the preliminary round. The OHL champions had already secured a berth in Sundays championship game after their second win. "It gives us confidence to know we can beat every team in the tournament," Storm forward Scott Kosmachuk said. The Val-dOr Foreurs, 2-1, and the Edmonton Oil Kings, 1-2, meet in Fridays semifinal in a clash of the Quebec and Western league champions. The winner faces the Storm for the Cup. Kosmachuk is a Winnipeg Jets prospect and led Guelph with a hat trick. Detroit Red Wings draft pick Tyler Bertuzzi scored twice. Marc Stevens and Dallas Stars prospect Jason Dickinson added a goal apiece for an explosive offence thats churned out 18 goals in three games in the tournament. The Storms Justin Nichols held off London when they pressed late in the first period and midway through the second. He made 45 saves for the win. Anderson, a Columbus Blue Jackets prospect, and Brett Welychka replied for the Knights. London mustered just four goals in three games. Two were scored by defencemen. The Knights were stopped on two penalty shots in the tournament and they scored once on 12 power-play chances. London outshot the Foreurs 51-28 in the first game of the tournament, but lost 1-0. "Its a bad time to get cold for offence and for scoring goals," Knights forward Max Domi said. London goalie Anthony Stolarz stopped 14-of-17 shots and was replaced by Jake Patterson early in the second when he inadvertently kicked the puck into his own net. Patterson allowed four goals on 21 shots. Guelph also ousted London from this years OHL playoffs on Apr. 11. The Knights had five weeks without a game, which may explain their lack of touch around the net. "Its not easy being off for that long and coming back and playing at the high level these guys have been playing through the whole thing and winning championships," Knights forward Bo Horvat said. "Weve been practising the whole time, but theres no excuses." Londons goaltending felt unsettled as well. Because of an eight-game playoff suspension in March, Stolarzs hiatus prior to the Cup was even longer. In his first game in seven weeks, he made 27 saves in the loss to Val-dOr. But the Philadelphia Flyers prospect was replaced by Patterson both Wednesday and after two periods of Sundays 5-2 loss to Edmonton. Wednesdays round-robin finale featured a pair of frightening knee-on-knee collisions, although the players in each case escaped major injury. Storm assistant captain Zack Mitchell was tossed at 6:56 of the first period for kneeing London defenceman Dakota Mermis. The CHL suspended his Storm teammate Chadd Bauman for the rest of the tournament Wednesday for the same hit on Val-dOr defenceman Guillaume Gelinas on Monday. Knights defenceman Nikita Zadorov took a tripping minor in a second-collision with Bertuzzi, who limped off the ice. But both Mermis and Bertuzzi stayed in Wednesdays game, whereas Gelinas was unable to play the following night against Edmonton. Londons frustration boiled over in the final minutes and Stevens scored Guelphs fourth power-play goal of the game on a two-man advantage at 17:14. The Windsor Spitfires of 2010 went 4-0 en route to the Cup that year. But the Spitfires opened the 2009 tournament with a pair of losses and ran the table to claim the trophy. For that reason, Guelph wanted London gone so the Knights couldnt come back to haunt them Sunday. "This team is a team that once they get this city and this building behind them, they can really do some damage," Guelph captain Matt Finn said. "We didnt want to let them back in because theyre a dangerous team. "We wanted to be the team that was 3-0 and knock London out of this tournament." Marcus Davenport Saints Jersey . CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Marc Gasol isnt reading too much into the Memphis Grizzlies first 3-0 start.Thats better than being 0-3, he said with a shrug of his shoulders.Gasol scored 22 points, Zach Randolph had 12 points and 12 rebounds and the Grizzlies defeated the Charlotte Hornets 71-69 on Saturday night.Gasol said the Grizzlies, who played without the concussion-sidelined Courtney Lee, will have to improve dramatically on offence if they hope to keep winning. They beat the Hornets despite shooting 36 per cent from the field. It wasnt pretty, Gasol said. It felt like a quarter was missing. But well take the win.The Hornets (1-1) were led by Al Jefferson, who scored 19 points on 8-of-19 shooting. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had 11 points and 12 rebounds, but the teams big free-agent acquisition, Lance Stephenson, scored two points and didnt play in the fourth quarter. The Hornets gave Stephenson a $27 million, three-year contract in the off-season.But coach Steve Clifford used Gary Neal late in the game. He also seemed to send a message to Stephenson afterwards. He just didnt play very well, Clifford said. I coach to win. I went with the team that played the best. The guys that know what theyre doing out there and played the best are the guys that played. The guys that continue to play like that will be the guys that play.Stephenson, who has been bothered by a groin injury, stood near the end of the bench for most of the last five minutes and cheered his teammates, although he looked a little perturbed.Im frustrated, Stephenson said. But thats part of being a pro, just learning from your mistakes, getting better every time and have no regrets. With the Grizzlies trailing 69-68, Gasol scored off a drive on a pick-and-roll and drew a foul from Marvin Williams for a 3-point play 58 seconds left. They were playing so far off the pick-and-roll, I made a little space and just drove it to the basket and got lucky and scored, Gasol said.Kemba Walker, who made two big shots including the overtime winner in the opener against Milwaukee, missed a 16-foot jumper with 5 seconds left that would have tied the game. The Grizzlies limited Charlottes version of the big three — Jefferson, Stephenson and Walker — to a combined six points on 2-of-14 shooting to take a 36-30 lead at halftime. Kidd-Gilchrist kept Charlotte in the game with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the first half.To go 2-1 on your first week Id be high -fiving you, bot to go 3-0 and beating Indiana on the road is very good, Grizzlies coach David Joerger said.BENCH PLAYGrizzlies starters outscored opposing starters 171-95 in their previous two games, but the teams bench production had been limited. Vince Carter gave Memphis a boost with nine points, although the Grizzlies reserves were still outscored 29-20.NO DefenceClifford was visibly upset with his teams play, particularly on defence, and pounded a table several times during his news conference as if slamming home a point. The disappointment, to be honest, if we defend in the last three minutes, we win the game, Clifford said. So we bit on two shot fakes that you cant do in this league. ... Two blown coverages and two things we worked on this morning. We did a good job the whole game but two bad individual defensive plays and two blown coverages in the last three minutes cost us. Its disappointing. Very disappointing.___TIP-INSGrizzlies: Joerger said Lee will be out a while with a concussion. Lee was injured in the first half of Memphiss 97-89 win over Indiana on Friday. Tayshaun Prince started in his place.Hornets: Bobby Phills retired No. 13 jersey has returned to the rafters in Charlotte. The Hornets raised Phills jersey during a ceremony at halftime. Phills jersey originally was raised at the Charlotte Coliseum on Feb. 9, 2000, following his death in an automobile accident a month earlier. You want to pick the Los Angeles Kings to win the Stanley Cup, but you think theyre tired and you know the New York Rangers are well-rested, so youre not sure. But I am. Im right, arent I? 2) When Steve Ballmer told his friends he was investing two billion dollars in a sports venture, do you assume they asked him which league he was buying? 3) Do you know what FIFA stands for? Im starting to think that one or both "Fs" stand for "Fix". 4) Would it jinx Mark Buehrle if I told you that Roy Halladay was 7-2 on this day 11 years ago and went on to set the Blue Jays record with 22 wins? Thus, jinx or not, Buehrle is well ahead of Halladays 2003 pace with his 10-1 record. 5) For all the times you might have said you couldnt cheer for LeBron James, did you ever think that would be as easy as Lance Stephenson made it during the Heat-Pacers series? 6) I dont root for the Chicago Blackhawks or for any other team, but can you understand that Chicagos 7th-game loss to the Kings saddens me because it means anthem singer Jim Cornelison is off for the summer? 7) And speaking of big voices, wouldnt you drive to work with more enthusiasm if Bob Cole was describing the trip from the passenger seat? 8) If Steve (Basket)-Ballmer has another two billion dollars, which he does, do you think he might like to buy the Buffalo Bills, move them to Los Angeles and become Steve (Foot)-Ballmer? 9) Are we getting ahead of ourselves if we watch this weeks Blue Jays-Tigers series and imagine that its a playoff series? 10) I know its pro sports and theres no room for sentiment when tough decisions have to be made, so its clear we shouldnt feel sorry for Peter Budaj. But how do you ignore the fact that Carey Price called him "one of the nicest people Ive ever met"? 11) What should I make of the following - when once I raised eyebrows by saying I might watch soccers World Cup, I now raise eyebrows by saying I might not? 12) I know you never thought youd see this, but Im saying youll never see it again - two batters (KCs Billy Butler and Omar Infante), after hitting apparent singles to right field, were thrown out at first base by Jose Bautista in back-to-back games.dddddddddddd Do you think you might see that again? If so, let me know and Ill bet you two billion dollars. 13) The Memorial is otherwise known as Jack Nicklaus golf tournament. Is it time to admit youre old if you remember the events that used to bear the names of Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Andy Williams, Glen Campbell, Sammy Davis Jr., Joe Garagiola, Jackie Gleason, Dean Martin, Ed McMahon, Danny Thomas and Jamie Farr? 14) Are you curious to know why Los Angeles Kings playoff hero Alec Martinez didnt take up baseball like Dennis, Edgar, Pedro, Victor, Carlos, Buck, Dave, J.D., Nick, Tino etc. etc.? 15) When Torontonians read about citizens the world over who have voted against Olympic bids by their cities, do they have trouble remembering when they voted to support the staging of the 2015 Pan-American Games? 16) A Toronto Argos press release began with the announcement that Chad Kackert had been named the teams strength and conditioning coach. Shouldnt the first line have dealt with the retirement of the 2012 Grey Cups most valuable player? 17) Do you wonder, as I do, why NHL players on their way to the Stanley Cup final refuse to touch the trophies that signify conference titles, but have no trouble donning hats that do the same thing? 18) I thought it sounded silly when David Ortiz declared "war" on David Price of the Tampa Rays, but let me ask you this - if you were casting a movie and you needed someone to put fear in the heart of the enemy, wouldnt Big Papi fit the part? (As long as he wasnt talking about baseball, I mean). 19) Alex Ovechkin called Barry Trotz to welcome him to Washington. Just in case the new coach might wonder whos boss? 20) And finally...if the Stanley Cup Final finds you humming the 70s disco hit "From New York to LA", you should know who sang it. Do you? Edmonton, AB - A West Division showdown is on tap this afternoon, as the Edmonton Eskimos entertain the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Commonwealth Stadium. Watch all the action live on TSN1, TSN3, TSN4 and TSN5 at 4pm et/1pm pt. With just four games left on the schedule, it is now or never for the Blue Bombers as they find themselves in last place in the division standings, two games under .500. Unfortunately, this situation is Winnipegs doing, after the team won three straight and five of the first six games to open the 2014 campaign. The Bombers have won only once since that strong start, a 24-16 triumph versus Montreal in Week 9. Last week, the program was thrashed by newcomer Ottawa in a 42-20 decision on the road, the teams fifth consecutive setback and the seventh in eight tries overall. Winnipeg actually held a 10-7 lead after one period of play against the RedBlacks, but then the expansion club went to work with three touchdowns in the second frame and ran away with the victory from there. Quarterback Drew Willy hit 19-of-30 passes for a decent 223 yards, but he failed to get a single pass into the end zone, was sacked six times and had three attempts picked off. Robert Marve registered the lone offensive TD for the Bombers on a one-yard run in the second frame, while Maurice Leggett silenced the crowd with a thrilling 114-yard missed field goal return for a major in the opening period. Defensively, Winnipeg didnt have a prayer as the RedBlacks produced a hefty 477 yards of offense, an uncharacteristic effort considering Ottawa was next- to-last in the league with only 294.3 ypg of offense heading into the contest. As for the Eskimos, they appear to have their bags packed for the postseason as they are tied with Saskatchewan for second place in the West behind only Calgary, which has already clinched a playoff berth. Edmonton is making it hard on itself though, having lost two of its last three outings and four of six. Last weekend, Edmonton came up just short against Toronto on the road, 33-32, but dont blame quarterback Mike Reilly who threw for 272 yards and two touchdowns. Granted Riley, who ran for a team-best 36 yards and a score, did toss an interception and was sacked three times, but it was a team effort that resulted in the setback as the Esks got hit with 18 penalties for a loss of 224 yards. Edmonton went into last week as the second-most penalized team in the league with 149 flags being thrown at it, for a league-high 1,260 yards, but this level of undisciplined play reaches new heights for sure and should give head coach Chris Jones reason to be concerned. Defensively, the Eskimos did give up 370 yards of offense to the Argonauts and still the visitors came up just short in their comeback bid. On the season, Edmonton has bragging rights when it comes to slowing down opponents, limiting teams to a mere 289.7 ypg, easily the best mark in the league entering Week 16 action. The Eskimos stand third in the CFL in points allowed with 20.4 per contest, while the offense is second with 26.6 ppg. But while those aforementioned numbers certainly work in favor of Edmonton, there are ones that have crippled the squad from time to time and those are the over-the-top penalties. As if there were any doubt, the Eskimos have been hit with infractions more often (167) than any other team, and that has led to being pushed back one way or another by an average of more than 100 yards per outing. The first meeting of the season between the clubs took place in Winnipeg at Investors Group Field during Week 4, where Edmonton halted a three-game win streak to start the season by the Bombers, with a 26-3 rout. In that contest, Edmonton scored the first 13 points and never looked back, as Reilly survived four sacks and an interception by throwing for 192 yards and a score. Willy wasnt nearly as fortunate as he absorbed five sacks, had an INT of his own and completed only 14-of-27 attempts for 180 yards. Winnipeg controlled the action for less than 22 minutes and failed to capitalize on 14 penalties for 125 yards charged to the Esks. With the victory, Edmonton now leads the all-time series by a count of 96-85-3, dating back to 1938 and considering only regular-season meetings. Marc-Andre ter Stegen Jersey . Bernardez jumped on a loose clearance off a last-ditch cross from Shaun Francis. Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando went up against Earthquakes forward Alan Gordon to try and punch it clear, but the ball barely made it out of the visitors 6-yard box, allowing Bernardez to hammer it home. The final whistle sounded just after the ensuing kickoff. The draw extended San Joses unbeaten streak at Buck Shaw Stadium to 21 games in all competitions. The Earthquakes used another 95th-minute goal, this one from Gordon, to force a 1-1 tie with top-seeded Mexican side Toluca in the first leg of the teams CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal Tuesday. Chris Wondolowski also tallied for the Earthquakes, who had lost their regular-season opener to RSL in three of the previous four seasons. Joao Plata scored his second goal in as many games for RSL, which was bidding for a second straight win to start the season under new coach Jefff Cassar.dddddddddddd Kyle Beckerman and MLS rookie Luke Mulholland also scored first-half goals against San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch. Wondolowski scored in the sixth minute from point-blank range, using his right thigh to redirect Bernardezs flick header of a long free kick by Shea Salinas. Beckerman equalized for Real Salt Lake just five minutes later. Plata laid off a ball into space for Beckerman to strike with his left foot from 27 yards. The shot ricocheted in off the right post. Plata initiated and finished RSLs second goal-scoring sequence in the 32nd minute, beating two defenders from the left wing, trading give-and-go passes with Luis Gil and deking Earthquakes centre back Jason Hernandez before pulling a 12-yard strike just inside the near post. Mulholland put RSL up 3-1 in first-half injury time, racing past a scrambled San Jose defence to pick up the rebound of Ned Grabavoys shot and slot it home from 8 yards. He also explained the decision to bring back defensive co-ordinator Mel Tucker for a second season, saying the Bears went through an "extensive process" and determined he "possesses the necessary skills, personality subset, character, patience and passion to be that guy." The reigning world player of the year took part in some light workouts with the first team, followed by stretching. He was smiling and appeared at ease at practice at the team base in Campinas, northwest of Sao Paulo, as he took part in a playful game of keep away from teammates. The team was set to leave later in the day for Manaus for its matchup with the U.S. on Sunday. Portugal was humiliated in a 4-0 defeat by Germany in their opener. Another loss and the fourth-ranked team in the world could be eliminated even before its final Group G game against Ghana. Ronaldo has been hampered by tendinitis and a muscle injury since before the tournament, creating plenty of speculation about how he would perform in Brazil. He was doubtful to play before the Germany game, but declared himself fit and went on to produce a subdued performance that only added to the usual drama and scrutiny surrounding the player. Team officials dismissed reports suggesting that Ronaldo could be risking his health by playing, saying they were tired of having to deny every rumour about a player many consider to be the worlds best.dddddddddddd. They noted, however, that he often plays with a brace and said hes healthy and would play against the U.S. Teammate Helder Postiga also expressed frustration over the media circus around Ronaldo. "I have already answered so many questions about Cristiano Ronaldo. Actually we speak about him every day. If I am sick of it, imagine how he is feeling," Postiga said. "If he is available enough to train with us thats probably because he is feeling well. Hes been training with us all these days and as usual he always gives his best. Hes just fine." Ronaldo has been one of the best players in the world for about a decade, and last year he even passed Lionel Messi by ending the Argentina forwards streak of winning the FIFA Ballon dOr. He has also excelled on the world stage, helping Portugal reach the 2004 European Championship final and the 2006 World Cup semifinals. The team also advanced out of the group stage at both Euro 2008 and the last World Cup, and then reached the semifinals at Euro 2012. Although he is Portugals all-time record scorer with 49 goals in 111 appearances, Ronaldo scored just twice in the last two World Cups. This week, collegiate players from across Canada participated in three regional combines in Edmonton, Montreal and Toronto. Those who impressed in each of the three events were asked to attend the main CFL Combine which begins Friday in Toronto. TSNs Duane Forde gives his thoughts on this weeks regionals, who impressed and who to look out for in Toronto this weekend. EDMONTON - Twenty-one draft eligible players participated in Mondays Edmonton regional combine with five of them advancing to the national combine in Toronto. The most impressive among them was Simon Fraser receiver Tore Corrado. Having established himself more as a kick returner than as a receiver at the NCAA Division II-level, Corrados quickness is his greatest strength. His skill set gives him an opportunity to be an effective player on the bigger Canadian field. Corrados SFU teammate Dylan Roper turned scouts heads early in the day when he hoisted 225 lbs. 26 times. The defensive end clinched his trip to Toronto in the one-on-one drills, where his quickness off the edge and non-stop motor were evident. The Regina Rams also had two players promoted to the main combine in guard Kyle Paterson and defensive end Michael Dadzie. The latter hails from the athletic hotbed of Brampton, Ontario and, although he wasnt a full-time starter for the Rams, he possesses a combination of strength and speed that intrigues scouts. Paterson hopes to continue following in the footsteps of fellow Weyburn, Saskatchewan natives and U of R products Brendon LaBatte and Brett Jones. He topped the bench press test with 27 reps and was clearly the most athletic O-lineman in attendance. Rounding out the national combine invitees was rock solid Manitoba linebacker Thomas Miles, who tested well and brings an element of physical play to the table. My honourable mentions from the Edmonton regional go to scrappy Manitoba receiver Andrew Smith, who combines good leaping ability with a willingness to compete in the air for every ball, and Calgary kicker John Mark, who wasnt as accurate as usual, but hit the ball well on every field goal attempt. MONTREAL - There were twenty-seven draft eligible performers among the participants at Wednesdays Montreal regional combine, five of whom earned their way to the national event. Nigel Romick of Saint Marys distinguished himself in a very competitive defensive line group, testing very well across the board and showing great versatility by taking one-on-one reps at tackle, end and even linebacker. Sherbrooke receiver Francis Lapointe, one of the favourites among scouts entering the combine, lived up to his advance billing, running solid pass routes and tying for the fastest 40-yard dash of the day. Two running backs with very different skill sets will also be moving on to the national stage. Bruising fullback Alexandre Dupuis of the Montreal Carabins came back last fall from injuries to both knees that had wiped out his 2012 campaign and continued to impress with his work ethic and toughness. Meanwhile, Lavals shifty Guillaume Bourassa, who has always had to share time in the crowded Rouge et Or backfield, shone as both a receiver and blocker. Performing on the Concordia University field that he has called home for the last four years, Stingers linebacker Travis Bent also punched his ticket to Toronto. The native of Ajax, Ontario was one of the most heavily recruited players in this class coming out of high school. A number of other players also caught my eye in Montreal, led by Mount Allisons Quinn Everett, who shows good potential as an O-lineman after spending the last four years on the defensive side. Defensive linemen Vincent Desloges (Laval), Shaquille Armstrong (Concordia) and Sanmi Adereti (St.FX) all had their moments, as did receivers Nathan Heather and Mike Harrington, while McGill DB Mattey Ossom and Bishops LB Omar Smith-Jackson displayed outstanding athleticism. TORONTO - On Thursday, Toronto was home to the third and final regional combine with 25 draft eligible prospects on hand. Four would ultimately earn promotions to this weekends national combine, led by former St.FX defensive back Raye Hartmann. An AUS All-Star in 2011, Hartmann had sat out the last two seasons, but showed absolutely no signs of rust as the 62" Mississauga, Ontario native was dominant in pass coverage and excelled in testing. Big Queens receiver Scott MacDonell was equally impressive, using his 65", 225 lbs. frame to his advantage in one-on-ones. He runs well for his size and could certainly contribute at the next leavel with most teams, at least occasionally, employing a tight end package. The day got off to a bit of a rough start for Toronto running back Aaron Milton, when he raised some eyebrows by declining to do the bench press test, later citing a shoulder injury. The big back more than made up for it on the field, showing both explosiveness as a ball carrier and receiver, as well as a willingness to get his nose dirty in blocking drills. High-energy defensive end James Tuck of the York Lions snagged the other invitation, combining an impressive level of athleticism with an even more impressive effort level. Winnipeg-born, Texas-raised offensive lineman Tchissakid Player of Northwestern State was a virtual lock to claim a spot at the main combine until a pulled hamstring ruled him out. Strong-legged kicker Zack Medeiros (Western), waterbug receiver Quincy Van De Cruize (Bishops), and hard-working Guelph defensive tackle Jeffery Finley were among several who didnt advance but likely still helped their stock on Friday. The 41-year-old Northern Irishman has proved a perfect fit at Liverpool since taking over from Kenny Dalglish in the summer of 2012 and steered the team to an unexpected title challenge in the Premier League last season.SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The San Jose Sharks are bringing back coach Todd McLellan and general manager Doug Wilson for another season despite another early playoff flop. Owner Hasso Plattner said Wednesday he was accepting Wilsons recommendation to keep McLellan after the Sharks became just the fourth NHL team ever to lose a best-of-seven playoff series after winning the first three games. "I am very disappointed in the way our team finished the 2013-14 season," Plattner said in a statement. "Gaining a 3-0 series advantage and being unable to advance is a major blow to our organization and fan base. Our teams have been consistently built to go deep into the playoffs and this goal wont change. "Doug Wilson and I have met over the past two weeks. He has shared his support of the coaching staff, as well as his recommended changes to our teams roster, and he has my complete support moving forward." Plattner also thanked fans for their support and said he is not satisfied with the performance the past few seasons and believes a plan is in place to improve on those results. "I am confident that with the proposed changes, Doug and his staff will build a team we can all be proud of," Plattner said. The Sharks have a 271-130-57 record in six seasons under McLellan, posting the second-most wins inn the NHL in that span to Pittsburgh.dddddddddddd San Jose made back-to-back conference finals under McLellan, losing in four games to Chicago in 2010 and in five games the following season to Vancouver. The Sharks have won only one playoff series in McLellans other four seasons, losing in the first round to Anaheim in 2009, St. Louis in 2011 and Los Angeles this season. San Jose swept Vancouver in the first round in 2013 before losing a seven-game series to the Kings. Wilson became general manager in May 2003 and has built playoff teams every season. The Sharks have the second-most points in the regular season the past 10 seasons but are still looking for their first Stanley Cup appearance. The Sharks have most of their key pieces under control for next season after signing captain Joe Thornton and all-time leading goal scorer Patrick Marleau to three-year extensions in January. The most prominent unrestricted free agent is 37-year-old defenceman Dan Boyle. Forwards Bracken Kearns and Mike Brown, defenceman Scott Hannan and backup goalie Alex Stalock are the other unrestricted free agents. The team also could use one of its two compliance buyouts to cut ties with unproductive forward Marty Havlat, who is owed $6 million next season in the final year of his contract.
